Joseph “Joe” Flick, 89, of Smock, passed away after a brief illness at the home of his daughter, surrounded by family, on Monday, January 5, 2026.

He was born in Luzerne Township, Fayette County, on October 20, 1936, the only son of Thelma Kaiser Flick and Chester Leroy Flick.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his three sisters and their spouses: Wanda (Donald) Broadwater, Leeta “Peewee” (Harry) “Butter” Phillips and Mary Lee (Raymond) Mattie. He was the last surviving member of his family.

Joe worked for over 30 years in various departments at USX (Clairton Steelworks) before his retirement.

In 1957, he married his sweetheart, Nancy Robinson. He was a wonderful husband and her caregiver in the last year of her life. He was an extraordinary father and best friend of his daughter, Rachael and husband, John and confidant to his granddaughter, Courtney. He was a role model on how to live your life and was never ashamed to share of gospel of Jesus.

He considered his “earthly treasures” his family and his church family. He was a faithful member of the Allison Nazarene Church for over 40 years and later the Brownville Wesleyan Church for 20 years. He held many church jobs over the years and preached whenever there was a need, all at no compensation. He volunteered as an Adult Sunday School Teacher and church janitor in his 80s. His favorite saying was, “I do so little for the Lord, it’s the least that I can do.” He supported many charitable organizations and his church financially.

He is survived by his beloved daughter, Rachael; son-in-law, John; cherished granddaughter, Courtney; step-grandchildren, Jeremy and Zack; and granddog, Bella Bean. He is also survived by his two remaining sisters-in-law, Jackie Shaporka and Angel Zueger; his brother-in-law, Bobby Zias; many nieces and nephews; and his special church friends: Pastor Ed and Sandy Truitt, Bob and Kathy West, Tim and Tammy Hartman, Mary Frazee, Cora Bailey and Dana Camino.

Special recognition to his niece, Leeta Wadsworth and husband, Tom who kindly checked on him, retrieved his mail and brought fresh made meals and eggs; and his nephew, Tim Mattie and his wife, Evelyn who did so much for him including: making sure his lane was always plowed and his grass was nicely cut. Their kindness allowed him to live independently 89 years, up until his last month of life.

He loved his country home, outdoors and nature, and appreciated living by his long-term caring neighbors, Kathy and Donnie Keller.

Friends will be received in DEARTH FUNERAL HOME, 35 S. Mill Street, New Salem, from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, January 8, and until 11 a.m., the hour of service, on Friday with the Reverend Edward Truitt officiating. Interment in Bowman Flatwood Cemetery.

To paraphrase the late Reverend Billy Graham, “You may read somewhere that I am dead. Don’t you believe a word of it. I am more alive than I have ever been, I just changed my address and have gone into the presence of God.”
