Doris Bailey Betts
formerly of Fairchance
Doris Bailey Betts, the beloved family matriarch and school educator, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 30, 2026, in Minden, Nevada.
A product of the Great Depression, Doris was born on April 24, 1931, in Fairchance, Pennsylvania. Following her graduation from the Indiana Teacher’s College, Pennsylvania, she obtained her master’s degree in public education and dedicated her life to teaching, including her decades-long work in both special and bilingual education. She faithfully served her communities in California and Nevada with passion and commitment.
She was the cherished daughter of the late James and Daisy Bailey, and the loving wife of the late Dr. F. Gregory Betts, who served for many years as the superintendent of Douglas County School District.
Doris was known for her courageous spirit, devotion to her family, and often bringing loved ones together for holidays and vacations. She was a superb baker, had a lightening-quick wit, and had little time for those who placed their own needs above those of her community.
She is survived by her four sons and their spouses: F. Gregory Betts, James and Shawn Betts, Andrew and Janet Betts, and Christopher and Kimberly Betts; along with 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, with two more on the way.
Doris was a true firebrand, with an unparalleled work ethic and deep empathy for the less fortunate. She never prioritized her own success, choosing instead to guide and support her four sons through their college and graduate education. Thereafter, following the onset of her husband Greg’s debilitating Alzheimer’s, she quietly toiled without complaint to provide him with 24-hour in-home care. By dedicating herself to this physically and mentally exhausting task, she granted Greg one of his most fervent wishes, to avoid long-term institutional care.
Doris was a soldier in life for the causes in which she believed. Despite her humble origins, she followed the American dream and found hope and success through education, and supported programs that prioritized opportunities for those who struggled. She fiercely opposed any efforts to limit or minimize this critically important pathway for advancement in our community.
In lieu of flowers, Doris would want you to vote and to encourage those around you to do the same. Donations may be made to the Dr. F. Gregory Betts Higher Education Foundation, which provides education funding assistance. Donations may be forwarded to Dr. F. Gregory Betts Higher Education Foundation, 2550 Sunline Drive, Reno, Nevada 89523.
The family extends their sincerest heartfelt thanks to her many dearest friends, the incredibly supportive staff with Salterra at Carson Valley, and Compassion Care Hospice.
