James Edward Kormos, 96, of Brownsville, passed into the arms of the Lord on Friday, July 10, 2026.

He was born on October 18, 1929, in Brownsville, son of the late Alexander Kormos and Mary Sholtas Kormos. He graduated from Brownsville High School in 1948 and was a member of the basketball team.

He enlisted in the Air Force in 1948 as Airman 1st Class and served in the Korean War.

On September 26, 1953, he married the love of his life, Dolores Goglin. They were married for 56 years, until her passing on October 26, 2009.

Jim worked in construction for several years and was a member of Local 286. During those years, he was known to his coworkers as “Horse.” Later he went to work in the coalmines at both Vesta 5 and Emerald Mines where he was called “Puna.”

He acquired the love of gardening from his father and planted vegetable gardens for many years. He also enjoyed making projects from seashells that he collected during his many family vacations to Ocean City, Maryland.

Jim was a member of The First Christian Church of Brownsville where he served as a Trustee for many years. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 295 of Brownsville and then recently Post 940 of West Brownsville. He belonged to the United Mine Workers of America, Construction Local 286, and was a social member of the Hiller Fire Hall.

After Jim retired, he took on his most treasured role as Pap. He and Dolores watched their grandsons until it was time for each of them to go to school. They taught them so many life lessons and the boys looked forward to the numerous trips to see the trains, the playground, and to many other fun adventures in Pap’s car. He also never missed any sporting events or activities in which they participated. He constructed a customized, three seat stroller from the parts of an old gas grill and furnished it with seats, a rug, wheels and a handle and it became known as the “Grill Mobile.” He would proudly load the boys in and push them all around the neighborhood!

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his brothers: William Kormos (Patty), Ernest “Chuck” Kormos (Lucille) and Joseph Kormos; and a sister that passed away in infancy, Anna.

Jim is survived by his three children: Linda Karol (Jim), James A. Kormos and Karla Lent (Frank); his grandsons: Matthew Karol, Derek Lent (Corey) and Cory Lent (Megan); his great-granddaughter, Colbie Jean Lent, with whom he proudly shared his birthday; and special buddy, Chloe Ann Rimbey; sister-in-law, Helene Goglin; several nieces, nephews, extended family members and dear friends.

Jim’s family would like to extend much gratitude to the loving staff at Jennie’s Personal Care Home, where they showered him with love and care for the past 16 months. They, along with the residents, became family and shared such good times with him that we will never forget. Also many thanks to the staff of Amedysis Hospice for the comfort and compassion given to him these past few months.

Family and friends will be received at SKIRPAN FUNERAL HOME, 135 Park Street, Brownsville, PA 15417, from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday and from 10 until the Funeral Service at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, with the Reverend Charles House officiating. Interment will follow in Lafayette Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Jim’s memory to The First Christian Church of Brownsville.
