Frank Leonard Kurek
Hopwood
Frank Leonard “Chief” Kurek, 73, of Hopwood, died on Thursday, March 12, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born October 15, 1952. Frank spent 40 years as a coal miner and was a lifetime member of the Hutchinson Sportsman Club and a proud member of the Catholic War Veterans. He was a coach, chef, baker, lover, fighter, father to many, and friend to all. He was famous for baking the best treats and blowing his horn the loudest when cheering for the Steelers always with a “little sip” in hand. Chief loved to cook and bake. He made anyone who walked through the door feel like family. Upon retirement, Chief enjoyed traveling with his family and never missed a chance to spoil his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years Joy Kurek, sons Jason Kurek (fiancee Allison), Brian Frank Kurek (wife Emilie); daughter Courtney Schiffbauer, and granddaughters Corrine Eizabeth Kurek and Willow Christine Kurek. He was predeceased by his parents, Frank J. Kurek and Eleanor Krizner Kurek; and son-in-law Matt Schiffbauer.
Family and friends will celebrate his life Saturday, March 21, 2026 from 1 to 5 p.m. at Braddock’s Restaurant.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests sharing a favorite recipe, telling a Steelers story, or making a donation to Keeping the Faith Animal Shelter in Chief’s memory.
Cheese and Crackers. Doo-dah.
