Lake Lynn

James A. Stewart, Sr., lovingly known as “Pap,” passed away peacefully, in his home Friday, March 20, 2026, at the age of 87, just days before his 88th birthday.

Born March 28, 1938, in Lake Lynn, he was the son of the late Charles and Helen Stewart.

Jim was a man of quiet strength, a devoted provider, and a loving presence to all who knew him. He worked for many years as a truck driver before continuing his career at Duquesne Coal Mine in Greene County, always taking pride in providing for his family.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara Ann Stewart; his children, Donald “Sam” Stewart (Sherri Stewart), and Donna Stewart; his grandchildren, Randy “Jake” White Jr. and Barbie Stewart; and his great-granddaughter, Emily Wilson.

He is survived by his children, William “Bill” Stewart, Mary Stewart, Norma Friend (Paul Friend), Joyce Graham (Rodney Graham), and James “Jimbo” Stewart Jr. (Denise Stewart); his sister, Mae Strosnider; along with many grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, great- great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Jim found great joy in his faith, especially attending Jesus Mission Apostolic Church in Osage, W.Va., where he loved singing the old church hymns and cherished Pastor Gwynn.

He enjoyed life’s simple moments: morning walks, mountain drives listening to George Jones, yearly train rides with his son-in-law, and spending time with his family.

Above all, Jim was a devoted family man – the very definition of what a father and grandfather should be. He showed up. He was there for every moment that mattered and even the ones that seemed small. His family was his pride and joy, and he made sure each one of them knew they were loved.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to his caretakers for their compassion and kindness.

He will be deeply missed, but never forgotten. His legacy is not only in the life he lived, but in the lives he touched, the family he raised, the love he gave, and the memories that will be carried on for generations.

The family will receive friends and family in the DEAN C. WHITMARSH FUNERAL HOME, 134 West Church Street, Fairchance, from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 23, and from 10 until the 11 a.m. time of a funeral service Tuesday, March 24, with Pastor Gwynn McKinley officiating. Interment will follow in Mount Moriah Baptist Cemetery, Smithfield.
