Joseph E. Thurby, Sr.
Markleysburg
Joseph E. Thurby, Sr., 92, of Markleysburg, entered his eternal home in Heaven Saturday, May 23, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born February 12, 1934, Joe was the son of the late William A. Thurby, Sr. and Elizabeth Edgar Thurby.
He was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife of 61 years, Shirley Anne Page Thurby, who went home to Heaven January 28, 2018; his beloved granddaughter, Tera Lynne; and many cherished dogs and animals throughout the years, including his special girl, Sable.
Left to cherish Joe’s memory are his loving children, Terri Lynne Thurby, Joseph E. Thurby, Jr. and wife Karen, and Laurey Page Micarelli and husband Carl, all of Uniontown. He was a proud and devoted grandfather to Ashley Paige Kolesar and husband Rich, Kaitlyn Nicole Zuzak and husband Justin, John Michael Antoon, and Kirby Paul Manown III and wife Erika. He also held a special place in his heart for Gregory and Brianna Hensh, who were like grandchildren to him. Joe treasured his family deeply and especially loved time spent together, creating memories through travel, holidays, hunting trips, and everyday moments.
He also held a special place in his heart for his beloved granddogs and great-granddog, whose visits, companionship, and unconditional love brought him endless joy.
Joe graduated from Uniontown High School and attended Penn State University before proudly serving his country in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958 as a Specialist Second Class in the 501st Transportation Corps. Stationed in Ludwigsburg, Germany, Joe played an important role in logistics and transportation, supporting military operations throughout Europe, including Operation No Dex in Nice, France. His time in the service instilled in him the values of discipline, integrity and hard work, qualities that became the foundation of both his life and career.
Upon returning home, Joe built a remarkable legacy in the automotive industry that would impact generations. In 1963, he became a Dodge dealer, and in 1971 expanded the family business by adding a Lincoln Mercury franchise, helping establish what would become Thurby Automotive. His dedication to exceptional service, integrity, and strong relationships created a standard that continues to guide both his family and business today.
Throughout his distinguished career, Joe served on numerous automotive industry boards, including the Lincoln Mercury Dealer Advertising Association (LMDA) Board and the Pennsylvania Automotive Association (PAA) Board. Joe was respected by colleagues throughout the industry for his leadership, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to excellence.
A man of deep faith and service, Joe was a devoted member of Cherry Tree Alliance Church, The Gideons International, Masonic Lodge No. 651 for 63 years, Syria Shrine in Pittsburgh, and Caravan No. 9 in Uniontown.
Joe was a storyteller unlike any other. Those who knew him often said he should have written a book about his many life adventures and experiences. He loved sharing stories from his younger years working in Elk County for Sam Jack drilling gas wells on family property before entering military service, and he never met a stranger who didn’t enjoy hearing one of his unforgettable tales.
Joe and Shirley shared a love for travel and adventure, exploring the world together and creating unforgettable memories with family along the way. Circle, Mont., held a particularly special place in Joe’s heart, a place where he formed lifelong friendships and eventually purchased a beautiful ranch. There, he enjoyed the outdoors and pursued his passion for hunting antelope, whitetail deer, and mule deer.
An outdoorsman at heart, Joe loved spending time in Elk County hunting, fishing, and enjoying the beauty of nature with those he loved most. An animal lover through and through, Joe found great joy in caring for his sheep, cattle, goats, and especially his beloved dogs. He believed there was something special about the companionship of animals and loved them deeply.
Known for his generosity and servant’s heart, Joe quietly helped countless people throughout his life, believing deeply in giving back to his community and helping others whenever he could.
