Rita P. Grote Herring

Rita P. Grote Herring, 92, of Uniontown, passed away Sunday, May 24, 2026. She was born in Buffington April 23, 1934, to the late Paul Grote and Cecelia Miller Grote.
She was the beloved wife of the late Alvin Herring.
Rita worked as a secretary, salesperson, and last and longest at the library on the Penn State Fayette Campus. She volunteered at the St. John’s school cafeteria for many years.
In addition to her parents and husband, Rita was preceded in death by her daughter, Cheryl Maher; brothers, Charles (Dorothy) Grote, Raymond (Ann and Eleanor) Grote, Herbert (Jane) Grote, Gilbert (Thelma) Grote, Eugene (Eleanor) Grote, Vincent (Loretta) Grote; and sister, Genivieve (Jack) Garbutt.
She is survived by her children, Cathy (Phil) Hart, Brian (Mary) Herring; her grandchildren, Angela (Jason) Ankrom, Jeff Cech, Craig (Laken) Herring, Kelsie (Kyle) Pegram; and great-grandchildren, Sydney and Chase Ankrom, and Daxon and Finley Herring; and a sister, Loretta (the late Bill) Grimes.
Rita was devoted to family. She was a baker extraordinaire known for her famous 9×13 pies with the best crust!
At home she raised her three children, who all attended St. John’s schools. Her own faith began at St. Procopius Church and School in New Salem. In Rita’s last years, she was a daily attendant and watcher of Mass on EWTN.
Visitation for Rita will be held in the STEPHEN R. HAKY FUNERAL HOME, 603 N. Gallatin Avenue Ext., Uniontown, PA 15401, Sunday, May 31, from 2 to 8 p.m., with a rosary being held at 6:30 p.m. On Monday June 1, prayers of transfer will be held in the funeral home at 9:15 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 50 Jefferson Street, Uniontown, PA 15401.
Interment is in Lafayette Memorial Park.
