Freda E. Riedmann Metz, 94 of Smithfield, passed away on Saturday, September 5, 2026.
She was born on March 18, 1932, in Smithfield, the daughter of Joseph and Theresa Nill Voithofer Riedmann.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 54 years, Carl W. “Rocket” Metz and her cherished eldest daughter, Debra Metz Pepe. Also preceding her were seven brothers and seven sisters.
Freda’s life and love were selflessly devoted to her family. She kept a meticulously clean home and was a master at cooking delicious comfort meals. As her family grew, each child, grandchild, and great-grandchild was nurtured in her and Pappy’s loving arms and it was almost impossible to have a turn to hold those babies. They both had a deep love and appreciation for children. She and Carl filled their large family with gratitude by the example they set. The impact will be a legacy that will continue to ripple out for many generations to come.
She was a member of SS. Cyril and Methodius Church and the Confraternity of Christian Mothers there. She also volunteered at St. Vincent DePaul in Uniontown and belonged to the Smithfield Senior Center. She was an avid bowler at Manor Lanes until the age of 92. She remained feisty and competitive throughout her life. Whether it be bowling, shuffleboard, or a game of 500, she played to win!
Freda is survived by seven children: Susan (Robert) Schiffbauer, Carla (James) Moneck, Carl (Sherry) Metz, Pamela (Dennis) Vicinelly, Donald (Mary) Metz, Bruce (Holly) Metz and Melinda (Mark) Quarrick. She also is survived by 18 beautiful grandchildren and 19 cherished great-grandchildren. She has one surviving sibling, her sister, Theresa Dunham and many, many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends and family in the DEAN C. WHITMARSH FUNERAL HOME, 134 West Church Street, Fairchance, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and on Thursday, September 10, until 9:30 a.m. when Prayers of Transfer will be said. Her Funeral Mass will follow in SS. Cyril and Methodius Roman Catholic Church, 50 North Morgantown Street, Fairchance, at 10 a.m. Interment follows in Mount Moriah Baptist Cemetery, Smithfield.
The Confraternity of Christian Mothers will recite the Rosary at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
