Charles E. Mankins
Point Marion
Charles E. “Cork” Mankins, 67, of Point Marion, died Sunday, September 13, 2026, in his home, following a lengthy illness. Born in Shreveport, La. May 5, 1959, he was a son of the late Melvin “Jim” Mankins and Maddie “Marie” Locke Johnstone.
Cork honorable served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1978 – 1984, and then signed up with the U.S. Army Reserves, and receiving an honorable discharge May 25, 1989.
He was employed for 16 years with Campbell Transportation as an engineer on the river boats until his retirement.
Cork enjoyed the outdoors, camping and fishing, and especially spending quality time with his family.
Surviving are his wife and loving companion of the past 22 years, Sheryl Roper; two children: daughter, Hillary Freed (Dillon) of Orrville, Ohio and son, Jerry Mankins of Lake Lynn; two bonus children, Jaime Sudlow (Jimmy) and Joshua (Liz) Zopfi, all of Florida; nine grandchildren, Jase Graham, Skylar, Dakotah, Bryce, Micha and Seth Zopfi, and Michael, Jaycee and Weston Sudlow; eight great- grandchildren, “Papaw’s princess” Katalina Mae, Whitney, Meshack, Maisley, Josie, Lillian, Shepard and Dawson. Also two brothers, Jerry Mankins of San Antonio, Texas, and Michael Mankins of Clarksburg, W.Va.; two sisters, Michelle Flowers (Steve) of Morgantown, W.Va., and Kim Greathouse of Point Marion; and his beloved and loyal canine buddy, Walter.
In addition to his parents, his was preceded in death by a sister, Peggy Burnette; and brother, David Johnstone.
His family will receive friends in the RICHARD R. HEROD FUNERAL HOME, Point Marion, Friday, September 18, from 12 noon until the 3 p.m. hour of service, with the Rev. French Jenkins officiating. Military honors will be will accorded by his friends in the V.F.W. Post 747 and the American Legion, Post 499, Point Marion.
