Christians need to speak out

By Margie Groves 3 min read

I read with interest the recent Words from the Web column about the legal action that the ACLU took against the Monroeville Council and how they are no longer going to be able to recite The Lord’s Prayer at the opening of their council meetings.

How far this country has fallen! People are trying to erase God from everything. Next they will be coming into our churches and telling the ministers, pastors, rabbis and priests that they are no longer allowed to mention anything that would “offend” people.

It started when the Bible was removed from the schools. I am old enough to remember praying in school. At Christmas, we sang Christmas carols that told the true meaning of Christmas. Now you better not even mention Christmas anywhere. It is a winter break or season’s greetings.

Not too long ago, it was a fight about displaying the Ten Commandments. We wouldn’t want people to follow those rules. After all, it would be much better if we just let people make up their own standards. How is that working out? Crime has risen to an all-time high, but we wouldn’t want to follow 10 rules.

Now, it is that we “offend” people by opening meetings with The Lord’s Prayer. Well, I am offended. I am offended that people keep taking away my rights. Pretty soon we won’t be allowed to read our Bible in our own homes. We will have to hide our beliefs. Does that remind you of any other country?

Our country has really fallen from what it used to be. Foreign countries have started sending missionaries here because that is how far away from the Gospel that we have gone.

Now, back to the column that I was reading. I loved it when one of the ones responding was against The Lord’s Prayer. They felt that it should be stopped. Then they went on to paraphrase the Golden Rule. Jesus said, “And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise.” That’s in the gospel of Luke 6:31. They can quote Jesus, but then again, they probably don’t even realize that they are doing it. But then they don’t want you to quote the Bible.

As for the one who said that my God is a made-up god. My God is real. Someday they will know the truth. I hope and pray that it is in this life and not in the next life.

We Christians need to stop letting our Christian beliefs be trampled into the ground. We have as much right as anyone else to state our beliefs. If I want to pray, I shouldn’t feel as if someone was going to attack me for my beliefs. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.
