Cal advances to championship game Ryan Stefanski scored a game-high 23 points to lead California (Pa.) to a 69-55 come-from-behind victory over Fairmont State (W.Va.) Monday in the Main Street Classic at Wheeling (W.Va.) Jesuit.
The Vulcans trailed 34-29 at the half, but stormed back in the second half with a 40-21 advantage.
Stefanski made 5-of-8 3-point goals to lead the California attack. Ishmieal Kamara was in double figures with 12 points to go with Michael Johnson’s 11.
Darryl Hepburn scored 19 for Fairmont (6-1) with Jonathan Denham adding 10.
The Vulcans (9-3) will play the host team in the championship today at 4 p.m.
Women’s basketball
Saint Vincent 65, Walsh 62 – The Lady Bearcats rebounded from a loss Sunday to win the consolation game at the Owensboro (Ky.) Classic.
Nicole Giunta made 9-of-10 free throws to lead Saint Vincent (7-6) with 15 points. Geibel Catholic graduate Erica Hogan scored 11 points while Cassandra Cutts added 12. Connellsville’s Morgan Foley scored just two points, but had four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
The Lady Bearcats dropped an 80-56 decision to Brescia (9-5) Sunday in the second round of the tournament. Saint Vincent trailed by 10 at the half and wasn’t able to recover, dropping the second half, 39-25.
Cutts was strong underneath with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Kristen Lancas scored 14. Foley was held scoreless with two rebounds with Hogan scoring nine.
Boys basketball
Waynesburg Central 62, Albert Gallatin 38 – The Raiders bookended strong quarters to win their holiday tournament over the Colonials. Waynesburg held a slim 29-28 lead in the middle quarters, but outscored Albert Gallatin 33-10 in the first and fourth quarters.
Ten players scored for Waynesburg (9-2) with Robert Rohanna leading the way with 15. P.J. Schumacher, tournament MVP, scored 10 in the victory.
T.J. Hall was the lone scorer of nine in double figures for Albert Gallatin (2-4) with 11 points. Hall and Chris Moore were named to the all-tournament team.
Washington 68, Jefferson-Morgan 50 – The Rockets fell behind by 10 points in the first quarter and never recovered, losing in the consolation game of the Waynesburg Tournament.
Matt Ferencak made four 3-pointers to finish with a team-high 16 points. Jimmy Basilone, an all-tournament selection, scored 15.
Washington’s Dale Calloway led all scorers with 24 points.
