Carmichaels edges Frazier in boy’s basketball action Bobby Hathaway fired in a game-high 27 points as Carmichaels edged Frazier 64-62 in non-section boys basketball action.

Teammates Jamie Kowalczyk and Jono Menhart also scored in double figures with 15 and 14 points.

Frazier led 34-29 at the half, but the Mikes exploded with 19 third-quarter points and held off a late Commodore charge in the fourth quarter to extend their record to 7-5 overall.

Will Bronson had the hot hand for Frazier with 26 points, while T.J. Martinak added 17, including three 3-pointers.

Carmichaels visits Jefferson-Morgan on Friday, while Frazier is at Trinity Christian.

Yough 62, Brownsville 54 – Carson Thomas scored a team-high 22 points, but the Falcons dropped a Section 3-AAA game to the Cougars.

Mike Bogden added 14 points for Brownsville (5-8, 2-4), which led 14-9 after one quarter, but trailed 31-24 at the half.

Ben McCauley led all scorers with 27 points, while Adam Portik added 12.

Mapletown 76, Trinity, WV 54 – Four Mapletown players landed double figures as the Maples defeated Trinity, W.Va. in non-section play.

Joe Clites and Joe Kovach led the way with 18 points each, while Drew Denham scored 15, including two 3-point goals, and Andy Erjavek added 10.

The Maples held Trinity to just two points in the first quarter and never looked back as they bettered their record to 9-3 overall.

Brian O’Neil was the high scorer for Trinity with 16 points, while J.D. Alexander added 14.

Mapletown hosts West Greene on Friday in a section 2-A matchup.

Burgettstown 67, Jefferson-Morgan 64 – Jason Young led with 19 points as Burgettstown edged Jefferson-Morgan (2-10) in non-section action.

Vince Kraft was the high scorer for J-M with 22 points, while Jimmy Basilone had 15 with a perfect 5-of-5 from the foul line and three 3-pointers and Matt Ferencak added 11.

The Rockets will host Carmichaels Friday.

Girls basketball

Belle Vernon 34, Frazier 22 – Jeanine Mizikar was the game’s only scorer in double digits with 10 as Belle Vernon defeated Frazier in a non-section game.

Belle Vernon (7-6) only scored one point in the first quarter, but rallied back to hand the Lady Commodores their 12th loss of the season.

Vanessa Myers led Frazier with eight points, including one 3-pointer.

The Lady Leopards visit Geibel Catholic Jan. 14, while Frazier visits Yough on Friday.

Wrestling

Connellsville 82, Elizabeth-Forward 0 – Seven matches were decided by forfeit and Connellsville won the remaining matches as it blanked Elizabeth-Forward in a Section 2-AAA match.

Ashton Primus won at 119 for Connellsville as he pinned Frank Fine in 1:10, Eric McGinnis (125) pinned Dom Monti (1:35) and Delbert Sines (135) pinned Josh Faust (1:41).

Kyle Martin (140), Jason Doppelheuer (171), and Steve Hughes (275) also picked up wins for Connellsville.

The Falcons will meet McKeesport next Wednesday.

Albert Gallatin 68, McKeesport 6 – Albert Gallatin extended it’s record to 7-2 overall and 4-1 in section 2-AAA with an easy win over McKeesport.

Albert Gallatin’s John Bittinger pinned Ryan Mosqueda (3:48) in the 112- pound weight class. Jason Williams (135) won by decision over Terrance Manning (12-7) and Brandon Radicic (140) pinned John Manning (:36).

Ryan Howell (145), Jared Hirtz (152), John Ptak (160), Charlie Belch (171), Marc Berry (215) and Ryan Martelli (HWT) also picked up wins for the Colonials.
