Carmichaels girls keep rolling along Carmichaels kept on rolling, winning its 14th straight game as Autumn Willis tossed in a team-high 18 points to lead the Lady Mikes past West Greene, 63-40, in Section 2-A action.
Amber Willis added 11 points, while Christina Antonelli and Dot Virgili chipped in 10 each. Autumn Willis and Meghan Wood pulled down 10 rebounds each, and Jessica McMinn dished out 10 assists and added four steals.
Carmichaels (14-1, 8-0) led 15-6 after one quarter and 37-12 at halftime.
“We played well, were patient and I thought we executed real well,” said Lady Mikes head coach Jim Lane. “Our experience comes from our seniors and we have depth in scoring. We’re happy with the win, but we have six tough games left in the season.
“Our team goal is to win our first-ever section title. We’re just taking it one game at a time. We will play Monday at Mapletown. It’s a dogfight right now.”
West Greene’s Rachel Phillips led all scorers with 25 points.
Laurel Highlands 51, Trinity 29 – Deena Blanc paced three Fillies in double digits with a game-high 15 points, as Laurel Highlands won a Section 2-AAAA road contest over the Lady Hillers.
Hallie Cupp added 13 points, while Lauren Mahoney chipped in 10.
Laurel Highlands improved to 11-6 overall and 6-2 in section play. The Fillies took a 10-5 first-quarter lead, and increased it to 24-13 at halftime.
Trinity did not have a player in double figures.
Albert Gallatin 45, Peters Township 35 – Loui Hall led all scorers with 29 points, as the Lady Colonials remained perfect in Section 2-AAAA play.
Albert Gallatin improved to 14-2 overall and 8-0 in conference action.
Jackie Schaefer led the Lady Indians with seven points.
Ringgold 49, Connellsville 38 – Brittany Warren scored a game-high 24 points, as the Lady Rams topped the host Lady Falcons in Section 2-AAAA action.
Billie Jo Haas led Connellsville (8-9, 3-5) with 12 points, all coming on three-pointers.
Ringgold (12-4, 6-2) jumped out to a 13-9 lead after one quarter, and led 23-13 at halftime.
Mapletown 33, California 21 – Kaylin Matthews dropped in a game-high 13 points as the Lady Maples topped the Lady Trojans in Section 2-A action.
Visiting Mapletown jumped out to an 11-1 first-quarter lead, and led 15-6 at the break.
Katie Doman led the Lady Trojans (2-13, 1-7) with eight points.
Brownsville 49, Beth-Center 38 – Christina Libertini led the Lady Falcons with a game-high 16 points, including four 3-pointers, as Brownsville defeated Beth-Center in a Section 5-AA matchup.
Teammate Angela Smith also scored in double-figures with 12 points.
“I told the girls to play a nice composed game and get ready for the second half of the season,” said Brownsville coach Greg Golembiewski.
The Lady Falcons jumped out to an early 13-6 lead and never looked back as they improved to 5-3 in the section and 5-12 overall.
“Beth-Center came out in a full-court trap and we handled it well,” said Golembiewski. “Our strength right now as a team is identifying a defense and handling the best we can. Every up and down is very important.”
Brownsville will visit Washington (7-0, 11-3) Monday while Beth-Center (2-6, 5-12) will host South Side Beaver Monday.
Waynesburg Central 63, Yough 55 – Cigi Wright tossed in a game-high 23 points to lift the Lady Raiders past the Lady Cougars in Section 3-AAA action.
Jenny Marshall reached double figures (11) for the victors, who, after battling Yough to a 14-all first-quarter tie, took a four-point halftime lead. Waynesburg pushed the advantage to seven after three quarters.
April VanDruff added 10 rebounds for Waynesburg, which improved to 10-7 and 6-2 in section play.
Lindsay Proctor led Yough (8-7, 5-3) with 21 points, while Jennie Cochenour added 11.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Jefferson-Morgan 61, Beth-Center 38 – Vince Kraft paced a balanced Rocket scoring attack with 11 points in an exhibition over the visiting Bulldogs.
Jason Kuharic added 10 points, while Jim Basilone and Matt Ferencak chipped in nine points each.
Jefferson-Morgan (3-12) took a 13-8 first-quarter lead, and led 28-18 at halftime. The Rockets put the game away with a 20-4 third-quarter run.
Ryan Stotka and Larry Booze paced Beth-Center with 11 points each.
Girls Swimming
Peters Township 105.5, Laurel Highlands 75.5 – Sara Bonchosky captured the 200 IM medley, setting a school record and qualifying for the WPIAL finals in the process, but the Fillies dropped a Section 5-AAA meet.
Bonchosky’s time of 2:16.44 topped the field, and she was the lone first-place finished for Laurel Highlands (9-2, 1-1). She also qualified for the WPIALS with a time of 1:02.55 in the 100-meter butterfly.
The Fillies’ Keri Smiell qualified for the WPIALs in a losing effort, posting a time of 57.27 in the 100-meter freestyle.
Laurel Highlands returns to action Monday, hosting Morgantown (W.Va.) in an exhibition.
Boys Swimming
Peters Township 98, Laurel Highlands 85 – The Mustangs’ Dustin Stalnaker captured two individual events, but it wasn’t’ enough as the Indians handed Laurel Highlands its first loss this season.
Peters Township won eight events, dropping Laurel Highlands to 10-1 overall and 1-1 in Section 5-AAA.
Stalnaker topped the field in the 200 IM medley with a mark of 2:10:58, and also won the 500-meter freestyle (5:23.27).
Laurel Highlands’ Adam Collins captured the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 57.88, while Zernie Parker won the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:04.93.
Wrestling
Laurel Highlands 48, Ringgold 23 – Laurel Highlands extended it’s record to 5-1 in section 2-AAA and 6-2 overall with a victory over the Rams.
Levi Harris pinned Levi Brown in 160-pound action and Robert Urban pinned Seth Hough in the heavyweight match (5:25).
Ryan DiCenzo, Jarrett Bond, Buster Langeri, Mike Capan and Blake Faust all won by forfeit for the Mustangs.
Men’s Basketball
Pitt-Greensburg 71, Frostburg State (Md.) 67 – Isiah Blanciak scored a team-high 15 points in the non-conference game Wednesday night.
Phil Grenda and John Pulley added 10 points each, while Uniontown graduates David Winfrey (7) and Scott Winfrey (2) also contributed in the win. David Winfrey was 2 of 3 from the field and 3 of 3 from the foul line in 15 minutes of action, while Scott Winfrey sank 1 of 3 shots from the floor and dished out two assists.
