Big second half carries Cal to victory The California University of Pa. women’s basketball team turned it on in the second half Wednesday night, rallying for a 72-46 PSAC-West victory on the road at Shippensburg.
The Vulcans shot just 27.3 percent in the first half while the home team made 42.3 percent of its shots, but the visitors turned the tables in the second half by outscoring Shippensburg, 45-22. The Vulcans shot 59.3 percent from the field while the defense limited Shippensburg to only 18.2 percent.
Sameera Philyaw scored 21 points for California (18-1, 4-0) before fouling out. Becky Siembak had 16 and Stacia Hamilton added 15 to the winning effort. Suzie Gyarfas was strong under the boards with 13 rebounds.
Christina Kelly led Shippensburg (9-9, 2-2) with 14 points with Jennifer Scaffidi adding 10.
Thiel 69, Bethany (W.Va.) 66 – The Lady Tomcats made a first half lead stand for a Presidents’ Athletic Conference victory. Kelly Richardson led Bethany (14-5, 1-3) with 21 points. Amanda Swanson was the top scorer for Thiel (10-8, 2-2) with 20 points.
Men’s basketball
California (Pa.) 46, Shippensburg 45 – It was nip-and-tuck for the visiting Vulcans, rallying from an eight-point halftime deficit for a PSAC-West victory. California improves to 3-1 in the conference and 16-6 overall. Shippensburg falls to 1-3 and 5-14.
Ishmieal Kamara was the lone Vulcan in double figures with 12 points. Ron Banks scored 20 for Shippensburg.
Thiel 82, Bethany (W.Va.) 63 – The Tomcats made it a clean sweep with an easy PAC victory over the visiting Bison. Bethany drops to 1-3 in the conference and 7-10 overall. Thiel improves to 2-2 in the conference and 9-9 overall.
Geibel Catholic graduate Adam Checton made 1-of-2 free throws and grabbed a rebound in a reserve role.
Girls basketball
Oakland Catholic 82, Albert Gallatin 41 – Leading by 13 points at halftime, the home team put the game out of reach with a 28-9 third quarter for a non-section victory over the visiting Lady Colonials.
Loui Hall led Albert Gallatin (17-3) with 32 points.
Meg Bulger was the high scorer for Oakland Catholic (17-4) with 27. Brianne O’Rourke added 15.
