Waynesburg Central scored three unanswered goals in the second half and held off a Connellsville comeback for a 3-2 win in Section 6-AAA girls soccer action Wednesday at Connellsville. Allison Panzella got Connellsville on the board first with a goal 2:56 before halftime, but Waynesburg Central came back with goals from Taylor Augustine, Abbey Touthman and Claire Vehar to take a 3-1 lead.

Sam Brown scored at 26:05, but the Lady Falcons could not get the equalizer and fell to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in section games. Waynesburg Central improved to 5-4 overall and 4-1 in section games.

Geibel Catholic 4, Monessen 0 – Brittany Core scored two goals and Melissa Martin and Rebecca Sandor added one goal each to lift Geibel Catholic past Monessen, 4-0, in Section 6-AA girls soccer action Wednesday at Geibel Catholic.

Megan Beck got the shutout in goal for the Lady Gators with five saves. Geibel Catholic improved to 3-2 in section games and 4-6 overall. The Lady Gators travel to Jeannette Friday.

Girls tennis

Mount Pleasant 3, Brownsville 2 – The Lady Falcons came close to pulling off the upset, but fell to 5-5 with the loss to the 9-1 Lady Vikings.

Angie Pelehac got a 6-3, 6-2 win at first singles for coach Dan LoNigro’s team and first doubles teammates Erin Ryan and Kendall Connors won in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.

Latrobe 4, Connellsville 1 – Latrobe’s dynamic duo of Joell and Stacia Kissell got the ball rolling with back-to-back 6-0, 6-0 singles wins and basically never looked back in this Section 1-AAA match.

Connellsville salvaged a win in second doubles, where the team of Rachelle Wiltrout and Lyndsey Boors earned a 6-2, 6-4 win. Connellsville fell to 1-8 in section matches (1-9 overall), while Latrobe remained unbeaten at 9-0.

Boys golf

Mount Pleasant 191, Connellsville 205 – Jordan Jones fired a 1-over-par 35 and Zac Heide and Mike Bando followed with a 36 and 37, respectively, to pace Mount Pleasant to this Division I, Section 2 win over Connellsville at Pleasant Valley Country Club.

Dylan Firmstone also was under 40 with a 39 for the Vikings (7-2, 7-3), while Connellsville (3-6) for a 37 from John Leonard.

Frazier 196, Jeannette 219 – Dustin Lerda shot birdies on the first and sixth holes en route to a 1-over-par 36 at Greensburg Country Club to lead Frazier to this Division II, Section 2 win over Jeannette.

Tyler Rock (38) and Matt Adams (39) also were under 40, while Jeannette’s top golfer came in at 41. The Commodores improved to 7-3 overall and 5-2 in section matches, while Jeannette fell to 1-9, 0-6.

Girls golf

Mount Pleasant 183, Franklin Regional 213 – Nicole Smith (40), Maci Seibel (43) and Callie Jesso (46) all came in under Franklin’s top golfer (Kaitlyn Green’s 47) and the Lady Vikings stayed unbeaten at 10-0 in Section 1-AA action and 12-0 overall.

Girls volleyball

Laurel Highlands moved up from ninth to sixth in this week’s WPIAL Class AA rankings. The Fillies were impressive at the Upper St. Clair tournament last weekend, including beating top-ranked Hopewell.

Connellsville remained 10th in the Class AAA rankings. Geibel Catholic dropped from second to third in the Class A rankings, which also show Frazier holding steady at No. 7.

College baseball

Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus 3-13, Penn State Beaver 2-3 – Fayette scored a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 3-2 lead in the first game of this PSUAC doubleheader and Dave Novotney made it stand up by finishing a complete-game four-hitter.

In the nightcap, Fayette Campus sent 13 batters to the plate in an eight-run third inning and followed it with a five-run fourth to end the game in five innings.

Colton Wilhelm clouted a three-run homer for Fayette and Mike Newhouse had two doubles to drive in three runs in the third inning alone. Newhouse added a run-producing single in the fourth. Bobby Fulton had five hits in the doubleheader, including a pair of doubles in the nightcap.

John Zites pitched the five-inning nightcap, as Fayette improved to 15-1 overall and 3-1 in PSUAC games. Beaver fell to 2-3.
