Mundell’s 150 points claim TD Club title
Josh Mundell scored Carmichaels’ only touchdown in a WPIAL playoff loss last Friday to give him 150 total points on the season, plenty good enough to win the HeraldStandard.com Touchdown Club title for the 2012 football season.
Mundell’s TD was his 21st of the season. He also added 12 two-point conversions for his total of 150 points.
Mundell fell just six points shy of the all-time Touchdown Club record of 156 points scored by Mapletown’s Ryan Geisel in 2005.
The HeraldStandard.com Touchdown Club recognizes the area’s top scorer in football among 16 high school teams in the newspaper’s circulation area.
Mundell becomes Carmichaels’ first outright winner of the award. Anthonie Farrar shared the honor with Jefferson-Morgan’s Ryan Knight and Uniontown’s Arnold Walker in 2009.
Mundell will receive a trophy and Carmichaels will display the Touchdown Club’s traveling plaque in the high school trophy case for the next year. He became the sixth winner from Greene County and unseats Waynesburg Central’s Nick Zupper as Touchdown Club champ.
Jefferson-Morgan’s Dustin Conti scored twice in the Rockets’ playoff loss last weekend to grab a share of second place with Beth-Center’s Cody Durant, who scored the only touchdown in the Bulldogs’ playoff loss. Both Conti and Durant scored 15 touchdowns for 90 points each.
Beth-Center’s Matt Riggle and Jefferson-Morgan’s Nic Santoya tied for fourth with 14 touchdowns and 84 points each.
Mundell’s Carmichaels teammate, Brennan McMinn was sixth with 10 touchdowns and four two-point conversions for 68 points.
Frazier’s Jamie Fell was Fayette County’s top scorer with nine touchdowns and five two-point conversions for 64 points, good for seventh place overall.
Beth-Center’s Jason Stay was eighth with 62 points on 10 TDs and a two-pointer and Southmoreland’s Dakota Datz was ninth with 60 points on 10 touchdowns.
Connellsville’s Jordan McCrae and Belle Vernon’s Adam Ferita tied for 10th with nine touchdowns and 54 points each.
Jefferson-Morgan’s Mati Zeglan was the top point scorer among kickers. Zeglan kicked two field goals and 40 extra points on the season for 46 total points.
