Falcon golfers pull into second-place tie with 206-219 win
Ethan Porreca fired a 1-over 37 Monday afternoon to lead visiting Connellsville to a 206-219 road victory against Uniontown at Uniontown Country Club.
The Falcons (5-2) pulled into a second-place with the Red Raiders (5-1) in Section 2-AAA with 4-1 records and one match remaining in the first half of the schedule. Belle Vernon (5-0) stands alone in first place.
Connellsville’s Matt Firestone posted a solid score of 40. Derek Routzahn finished with 41. Hunter Konieczny (43) and Eli Armstrong (45) rounded out the scoring. Michael Roscart’s 46 did not count.
Trevor Uphold and Austin Thomas shared scoring honors for Uniontown with 6-over 42. Colton Mathias shot 43, Brody Schiffbauer had 45, and Emily Myers carded 47. Brayden Gmitter’s 55 was not used.
Belle Vernon 199, Albert Gallatin 236 – Jordan Mocello, Seth Tomalski and Jack Edwards all broke 40 in the Leopards’ Section 2-AAA road victory against the Colonials at Duck Hollow Golf Club.
Belle Vernon remains unbeaten, improving to 5-0 in the section and 7-0 overall. Albert Gallatin slips to 2-4 in the section and 3-4 overall.
Mocello was medalist with 2-over 37. Tomalski shot 38 and Edwards finished with 39. Wyatt Lukas had 42, and Donny Croftcheck and Evan Mesco both finished with 43.
Mount Pleasant 207, Jeannette 256 – Ryan Karfelt fired a 37 to lead the Vikings to a Section 2-AA home victory at Norvelt Golf Club.
Nico Pisula shot 39 and Aydan Gross finished with 40 for Mount Pleasant (4-1, 5-1).
Waynesburg Central 184, Brownsville 247 – The Raiders were tough at home on Rohanna’s Golf Course for a Section 3-AA victory.
Chase Phillips led the Raiders (4-1, 6-1) with 33. Aidan Titus and Dom Benamati both shot 37. Joe Kirsch (39) and Rykan Gustafson (40) closed the scoring.
Benjamin Vojacek was the low man for the Falcons with 39.
Charleroi 206, Elizabeth Forward 210 – The Cougars picked up a big Section 8-AA home win at Mon Valley Country Club.
Levi Large was the low golfer for the Cougars (5-1, 6-1) with 1-under 35. Jake Corrin finished with 40.
The Warriors’ Aaron Didjunas was medalist with a 2-under 34.
Laurel Highlands 206, Ringgold 230 – Jacob Kalich had his round of the season with a 3-under 33 in the Mustangs’ Section 2-AAA road victory at Rolling Green Golf Course.
Sevi Vecchiolla shot 41. Kayden Smith finished with 42 and Tyler Cook carded 43 for Laurel Highlands (2-3, 2-4). Ryan Revak and Nico Harim both finished with 46.
Brice Kowall was the low man for the Rams (0-5, 0-6) with 40. Evan Callaway (44), Evan Anderson (43), Trevor Benson (46), and Brandon Nguyen (57) rounded out the scoring.
McGuffey 189, Carmichaels 213 – The Highlanders remained undefeated in Section 3-AA play with a road win at Carmichaels Golf Club.
Logan Crowe (35), Joel Sovich (39), Brody Wagner (35), and Josh Rusimisel (37) all broke 40 for McGuffey (6-0, 8-1). Vaughn Fleissner closed the scoring with 43.
Connor Lapana was the low man for the Mikes (3-2, 3-3) with even-par 37. Nathan Dursa finished with 41. Zach Murphy, Aydan Bate, Eli Hastings, and Jase Zdravecky all shot 45.
Yough 212 (won playoff), Geibel Catholic 212 – The Cougars won the playoff, 19-21, for a Section 8-AA home victory at Madison Golf Club.
Seth Dolan had medalist honors for the Gators with 1-over 37. Mike Miller also had a solid round with 3-over 39. Aiden Holt (46), John Hess (43), and Gary Tarbuk (47) also counted in the final score.
Landon O’Donnell was the low man for Yough with 39. Caden Doran, Anthony Bonari, and Ian Toman all shot 43, and Nathaniel Bell closed the scoring rounds with 44.
Boys cross country
Connellsville 23, Southmoreland 36 – Jonah Lindstrom and Jake Pritts had a 1-2 finish for the Falcons for a non-section road victory over the Scotties.
Lindstrom’s winning time was 17:39. Pritts crossed the finish line in 18:46.
Southmoreland’s Selby Bell (20:27) and Dylan Bierhaus (21:21) were the next two runners.
The Falcons’ Elijah Sayloer (21:44), Connor Dillon (21:52), Dane Pavlovich (22:43), Tucker Albert (22:55), Cory Stanton (23:24), and Jayden Kooser (24:05) rounded out the top-10 finishers.
Girls cross country
Connellsville 15, Southmoreland 50 – The Lady Scots’ Lexi Ohler easily finished first in the non-section race with a winning time of 21:06.
Mount Pleasant’s Kaylea Voke was second in 24:10, with Connellsville’s Zoey Thomas third with a time of 24:30
The Lady Falcons’ Abigail Zavatchan (25:28), Trinity Moore (29:47), Hannah Tinkey (31:16), and Breanna Groff (31:29) rounded out the finishers.
Girls soccer
Connellsville 4, Hempfield 1 — Rylee Leasher scored all of Connellsville’s goals in the Lady Falcons’ non-section victory at Hempfield.
Addy Bandemer set up Leasher for the first goal of the game at 36:11. Hayley Washington set up the second goal eight minutes later.
Hempfield’s Jiana Patterson cut the lead to a goal, but Leasher completed her first-half hat trick with a goal at 12:07.
Leasher scored an unassisted goal at 31:33 of the second half.
Connellsville’s Sara Tinkey made six saves in the victory. Hempfield keeper Lila Clark had 13 saves.
The Lady Falcons improve to 2-0 overall.
Waynesburg Central 2, Washington 1 – The Lady Raiders opened the season with a non-section victory.
Bree Clutter and Rylei Rastoka scored one goal each, and Rastoka assisted on Clutter’s goal.
Bentworth 4, Albert Gallatin 1 – The Lady Bearcats led 3-0 at halftime and cruised to a non-section road victory.
Brina Orsatti scored the eventual game-winning goal for Bentworth.
Brielle Dillon scored two goals and Megan Keturakis added an insurance goal. Bella Moyer and Madelyn Johns both assisted on two goals. Nita Anderson was the winning goalie.
“We had a fast start. Brielle scored the first goal within five minutes. We were able to create several chances,” said Bentworth coach Tyler Hamstra. “We have lots to continue to work on and improve, but now we can focus on the little things.”
Boys soccer
Bentworth 3, Trinity Christian 1 – Adam Moessner, Ryan Moessner and Andrew Vipperman all scored one goal apiece in the Bearcats’ non-section win.
Ryan Moessner assisted on two goals and Gaige Davenport assisted on the other for Bentworth (2-0).
Girls volleyball
California 3, Mapletown 0 – The Lady Trojans returned home from Mapletown with a straight-sets, non-section victory.
California swept to victory by the scores, 25-21, 25-12, 25-20.
Miranda Fox (6 kills), Treslee Weston (4 kills, 2 aces), Marley Seward (5 kills), Marley Shiflett (7 assists), and Leah Williamson (5 assists) were stats leaders for the Lady Maples.
Trinity 3, Frazier 0 – The Lady Commodores had a rough road trip to Washington for a non-section defeat in three sets.
Trinity won by the scores, 25-20, 25-22, 25-16.
Addison Schultz finished with 7 service points and five blocks for Frazier (0-1). Allie Monack (8 kills), Gracen Hartman (11 assists), and Addison Hiles (11 digs) also had noteworthy performances.
Girls tennis
Mount Pleasant 3, Greensburg C.C. 1 – The Lady Vikings swept the doubles and won a single match for a Section 1-AA home victory.
Dani Trainer and Autumn Jurkovic-Kuzma swept to a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles. Ella Alakson and Hannah Shawley took second doubles in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
Ryleigh Drzal won her second singles match in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0.
Kiersten O’Connor’s third single match was stopped after two sets. She won the first set, 6-3, and lost the second, 6-4.
