Local roundup: Tedrow fires no-hitter in Lady Raiders’ section win
Gina Tedrow threw a five-inning no-hitter in Waynesburg Central’s 11-0 win over California in Section 4-2A softball action on Thursday at Waynesburg.
Tedrow had 14 strikeouts and walked two in earning the victory in the pitching circle.
Avery Davis had two hits and knocked in three runs. Ellie Makel also had two hits, and added two RBIs.
Devon Moore had one hit and an RBI, as the Lady Raiders improved to 5-1 in section play and 8-4 overall.
Waynesburg is in contention with Frazier (6-1) and Brownsville (4-2) for the section championship. It beat the Lady Commodores (5-4) on April 14, but lost to the Lady Falcons (3-2) the next day.
Waynesburg scored three runs in the first and third innings, and one in the second for a 7-0 lead after three. The Raiders scored four in the bottom of the fifth to put the 10-run rule into effect.
Uniontown 12, Ringgold 2 — The Lady Red Raiders trailed 1-0 after the first inning, but once they got going, Jason White’s team took care of the Lady Rams in Section 2-4A play at Bailey Park.
Uniontown, who can finish third in the section if it wins its final two league contests against Oakland Catholic (0-8, 1-9) and Laurel Highlands (4-5, 5-8), improved to 6-4 in the section and 8-6 overall.
The Lady Red Raiders defeated the Eagles, 15-4, in their first meeting. Uniontown edged the Mustangs, 2-1, on April 14 at Laurel Highlands.
The Lady Red Raiders scored two runs apiece in the second, third and fourth innings for a 6-1 lead heading into the fifth frame. Ringgold scored a run in the sixth before the home team put up six runs to end the game due to the 10-run rule.
Emmaleigh Noah struck out 12 and walked two in six innings of work for the pitching win. The junior allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits. Teammate Laurel White hit a two-run home run to left field in the sixth.
Uniontown’s Juliet White had three hits, including a double, and two knocked in two runs. She also scored twice.
The Lady Red Raiders’ Alivia Noah and Disaya Craggette had two doubles apiece. Noah had two RBIs and Craggette scored two runs.
Uniontown’s Graci Rodeheaver had two hits and two runs scored, and Alexa Budner knocked in two runs and singled.
Ringgold’s Cheyenne Lamont doubled and knocked in a run.
Mount Pleasant 7, Southmoreland 6 — The Lady Vikings built up a five-run lead after three innings and held off the Lady Scotties for a Section 1-3A victory to snap a two-game losing streak.
Mount Pleasant improved to 7-2 in the section and 9-5 overall, and have clinched at least a share of the section championship, as the best second-place Southmoreland (5-3, 7-5) can do is tie the Lady Vikings should Mount Pleasant lose its section-finale at Yough (2-5, 4-7). The Lady Vikings won the first meeting, 5-3.
The Lady Scotties took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning before Mount Pleasant scored three in the bottom of the first, three in the second and one in the third for a 7-2 advantage.
Southmoreland scored four in the sixth to cut the deficit to one, but the home team hung on for the win.
Danica Trainer has been getting most of the starts in the pitching circle for the Lady Vikings, but Gigi Stanek got the nod against the Lady Scotties.
Stanek yielded six runs (three earned) on 10 hits in 5 ⅔ innings and earned the pitching win. She struck out four and walked one before Trainer came in and recorded the last out in the sixth.
Trainer didn’t allow a run in the seventh for the save. She had four strikeouts and walked one over 1 ⅓ innings of hitless ball.
Trainer and Stanek had solid days at the plate, as Trainer knocked in two runs on three hits while scoring twice. Stanek had two hits, including a double, and one RBI.
Kendra Brunson had a hit and two RBIs for Mount Pleasant. Teammate Talia Reho had two hits and knocked in two runs. The Lady Vikings’ Jenna Whipkey doubled.
Makayla Brown led Southmoreland offensively with four hits and two RBIs. Teammate Abby Grabiak had two base hits.
Zoey Murphy took the pitching loss, but the junior doubled and drove in a pair.
Connellsville 23, Albert Gallatin 2 — The Lady Falcons took a big step in earning the fourth and final playoff berth in a Section 4-5A triumph over the Lady Colonials at Albert Gallatin.
Connellsville improved to 5-3 in the section and 9-3 overall. The Lady Falcons have four section contests remaining, which began Friday at Trinity (7-2, 9-6). The Lady Hillers won the first game, 7-6.
Connellsville plays Thomas Jefferson (5-2, 7-5) on Saturday at 12:30 and Monday at 4 p.m. before finishing section play at Peters Township (1-8, 3-10) on Wednesday. The Lady Falcons downed the Lady Indians, 15-5, in the first game this season.
Connellsville jumped on Albert Gallatin early with four runs in the first inning. It scored nine in the second and one in the third for a 14-0 lead. The Lady Falcons added nine more runs in the top of the fourth.
The Lady Colonials scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth frame.
Molly Greenwalt was 4 for 5 with three singles, a double and three runs scored. Cali Leichliter was 3 for 5 with three runs scored, two singles and a home run. Kalyn Cole also hit a home run, and added two singles while storing three runs. Connellsville’s Kaylee Roadman doubled.
The Lady Falcons had nine players record at least one hit, and eight with two or more.
Kendal King earned the pitching win with two strikeouts and no walks over two innings. Leichliter and Mackenzie Victor each threw an inning.
Albert Gallatin’s Ellie Seese had two hits and knocked in both Lady Colonial runs.
Baseball
Connellsville 10, Indiana 1 — The Falcons handed the Little Indians their first loss of the season in non-section play at Indiana.
Connellsville’s Jett Dunaway allowed one run on three hits over seven innings. He had two strikeouts and walked five.
The Falcons (9-5) scored two in the third, five in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth. The Little Indians (13-1) scored their run in the third.
Grayden Gillott had two hits, RBIs and runs scored. Noah Zawislan had two hits and RBIs and drew a walk.
Matthew Firestone had two runs, RBIs and drew two walks, and added a base hit.
Jefferson-Morgan 14, Brownsville 2 — John Woodward hit two home runs in the Rockets’ non-section win over the Falcons at Jefferson-Morgan.
The Rockets (9-3) scored two runs in the first and nine in the third inning for an 11-0 lead. Brownsville (4-8) scored two in the top of the fourth before the Rockets added three more in the bottom of the frame.
After holding the Falcons off the scoreboard in the top of the fifth, the game was called due to the 10-year run.
Dayten Marion earned the pitching victory. Teammate Jaymison Robinson doubled.
Mapletown 24, Hundred, W.Va., 0 — The Maples scored early and often in a victory over the Hornets in Hundred, W.Va.
Carson Vanatata was 3 for 3 and hit a solo home run. Ashton Walker was 4 for 4 and Lucas Stevenson hit a three-run shot. Daniel Fox had four RBIs.
Ashtin Nesselroad had a no-hitter as Mapletown improved to 2-10.
Northern Garrett, Md. 4, Albert Gallatin 1 — The Huskies scored two runs in the first and sixth innings and Landon Yoder held down the Colonials’ offense in a non-section win for the Huskies.
Yoder allowed one unearned run on seven hits over seven innings. He had four strikeouts and no walks.
Jason Myers and Ben Lilley had two hits apiece for Albert Gallatin (4-10).
The Huskies’ Luke Ross doubled and scored a run. Teammate Wally Brands had two hits and two RBIs. Liam Stewart, Hunter Livengood and Landon Yoder had two hits apiece Northern Garrett, who improved to 13-1.
Track & field
Westmoreland County Coaches’ Association Championships — Mount Pleasant had five individuals and two relay teams reach the podium on Thursday at Latrobe’s Memorial Stadium.
The Vikings’ Bryson Bankosh was second place in the high jump at 6-1. Teammate Jarret Garn was fifth in the 200-meter dash (22.6) and sixth in the 100 with a time of 11.25.
Aiden Johnson (triple jump) and Gage Sowers (pole vault) had fourth-place finishes. Johnson jumped 42-2 and Sowers vaulted 13-7.
The 3,200 relay team of Damian Ohler, Seth Painter, Bryce Gamble and Caius Marotta were sixth, as was the 1,600 team of Garn, Ohler, Johnson and Bankosh.
Rylin Bugosh placed fourth in the girls 200-meter dash.
