Local football roundup: AG’s ground game steamrolls Greensburg Salem in 48-33 win

Albert Gallatin rallied from an early 13-0 deficit and shredded Greensburg Salem’s defense for 402 rushing yards in a 48-33 non-conference Week Zero victory Friday night at York Run.

The Colonials put a pair of runners over the century mark with Tee Guesman racking up 131 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries and Adam Pegg churning out 123 yards and two TDs on 10 attempts as the hosts avenged a 28-6 loss on the Lions field in last year’s opener.

Roman Smith and Clayton Bolinger each added 52 rushing yards for AG.

Greensburg Salem jumped out to a 13-0 lead on Braydon Miller’s 27-yard touchdown pass to Brody Chismar and Chismar’s 13-yard TD run in the first quarter.

Bolinger began the Colonials’ comeback with a 4-yard touchdown run late in the quarter to make it 13-6.

Guesman’s first TD, a 48-yard burst early in the second quarter, combined with quarterback Bronx Jamison’s two-point conversion run gave Albert Gallatin a 14-13 advantage that it took into halftime.

Pegg extended the Colonials’ lead to 20-13 with a 5-yard touchdown run 1:24 into the third quarter but Max Topper returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a score to get the Lions back to within a point.

Guesman’s 3-yard scoring run and Pegg’s two-point conversion run put AG ahead 28-19 but Akheim McCreary’s 3-yard run and Alex Swatchick’s extra point cut the gap to two points.

The Colonials put the game away when they reeled off three consecutive touchdowns in the fourth quarter on Pegg’s 10-yard run at 10:27, Guesman’s 15-yard run at 4:37 and Tremayne Spillman’s 48-yard fumble return at 3:25 that made it 48-26.

The Lions tacked on one final touchdown on LeTrey Derry’s 3-yard run with 23 seconds remaining.

Jefferson-Morgan 42, Chartiers-Houston 7 — Deakyn DeHoet and John Woodward scored all of the Rockets’ touchdowns in a non-conference victory at Parker Field.

DeHoet reached the end zone four times. He scored on runs of 2, 62 and 10 yards, and caught a 71-yard touchdown pass from Triton Farabee in the fourth quarter.

Woodward opened the scoring with a five-yard run in the first quarter. His second touchdown was on a three-yard run in the fourth quarter that extended the Rockets’ lead to 35-7. Woodward gained 101 yards on 13 carries.

The Buccaneers’ Brody McCrerey caught a 19-yard touchdown pass and Dadrien Walls made the extra point to give the visitors a 7-6 lead in the second quarter.

DeHoet’s first touchdown provided Jefferson-Morgan with a 13-7 halftime advantage. The Rockets outscored Chartiers-Houston, 30-0, in the second half.

California 44, Serra Catholic 14 — The Trojans outscored the Eagles 22-0 in the fourth quarter en route to a non-conference win.

California clung to a 22-14 lead after three quarters, but touchdown runs from Logan Hartley, Landon Abercrombie and Malachi Peak put the game away for the Trojans.

Peak, who scored two rushing touchdowns, gained 144 yards on 15 carries.

Serra Catholic opened the scoring in the first quarter on Rayshawn’s Pritchard’s four-yard run and a 7-0 lead after Nathan Loughner made the first of two PATs.

California’s Alan Dennis returned the ensuing kickoff 86 yards into the end zone and Hartley ran in the two-point conversion for an 8-7 advantage.

The Eagles regained the lead in the second period when Chris Green pulled in a 21-yard reception from Pritchard for a 14-8 lead after Loughner’s kick.

Peak scored on a one-yard run and added the two-point conversion before Adin Keyes caught a 31-yard touchdown pass from Hartley.

Hartley scored from 36 yards out in the fourth before throwing a two-point conversion pass to Abercrombie.

Following Abercrombie’s two-yard touchdown run in the fourth, Keyes caught the two-point conversion from Hartley before Peak closed the scoring on a one-yard run.

Mount Pleasant 29, Jeannette 23 — The Vikings rallied from a 23-point deficit in the second quarter to edge the Jayhawks in non-conference action at Jeannette.

Mount Pleasant’s comeback started on Stephen Predajna two-yard run and Richard Shawley pulled in the two-point conversion pass from Dane Firmstone to cut the deficit to 23-8 with 2:38 remaining in the first half. Predajna’s four-yard run drew the Vikings within eight following Brady Brooks’ PAT with 10:59 left in the third quarter.

Mason Eicher’s three-yard run at 6:28 of the third pulled the visitors within two.

Firmstone found the end zone from two yards out with 2:16 remaining in the fourth quarter and Shawley ran in the two-point conversion to complete the comeback.

The Jayhawks’ Kymon’e Brown scored on touchdown runs of 1 and 46 yards, and threw a 74-yard touchdown pass to Jayce Powell, as Jeannette built up a 23-0 lead with 6:36 left in the second quarter.

McAlister Steele kicked a 35-yard field goal and made two PATs for the Jayhawks.

Frazier 43, Summit Academy 40 – Derek Diamond rambled for 193 yards and three touchdowns, including the go-ahead score from 8 yards out late in the fourth quarter, as the Commodores outlasted the visiting Knights in a high-scoring non-conference battle.

Diamond also scored on runs of 9 and 6 yards to help make a winner of Tony Battaglini in his head coaching debut with Frazier.

Chase Fulmer had six receptions for 94 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown, and also scored on an 85-yard run for the Commodores.

Frazier quarterback Brady Secrest threw for 120 yards with one TD and one interception.

The Commodores survived stellar efforts by Summit Academy quarterback Syamir Newkick, who passed for 282 yards and five-touchdowns, and receiver Demetrius Crosbym, who hauled in 10 receptions for 209 yards.

Bentworth 47, Brownsville 6 – Ben Hays scored four rushing touchdowns and returned a punt for a score in the Bearcats’ non-conference victory in Week Zero.

Hays scored on runs of 3, 9, 24 and 10 yards, as he gained 184 yards on 14 carries. He returned a punt 42 yards into the end zone with 11:39 remaining in the second quarter 28-0 lead. Teammate Matt Behanna scored on a six-yard run and Hays’ final touchdown extended the home team’s advantage to 41-0.

Ty Watson threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Behanna to cap the scoring for Bentworth.

Kaden Wimmer’s one-yard run got the Falcons on the scoreboard. Wimmer rushed for 14 yards and threw for 51 on eight completions.

Southmoreland 40, Valley 0 – The Scotties made a winner of Dustin Shoaf in his head coaching debut as Dawson Wolfe threw for 123 yards and two touchdowns and the Southmoreland defense turned in a dominating performance in a non-conference victory over the visiting Vikings.

Wolfe completed 9 of 14 passes with Gabe Kubasky pulling in four of those tosses for 43 yards and both TDs. Jackson Mickens led Southmoreland’s running game with nine carries for 58 yards and a score.

Mickens opened the scoring with a 2-yard touchdown run early in the first quarter with Ty Whoric tossing a pass to Brock Geho for the 2-point conversion and an 8-0 lead. Wolfe’s first TD pass to Kubasky was from 8 yards out and came with 2:21 left in the opening quarter with Liam Smith kicking the first of his four extra points to make it 15-0.

Averyon Darnell’s 9-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second quarter gave the Scotties a 22-0 advantage and Wolfe’s second scoring pass to Kubasky, this one of 21 yards, made it 29-0. Wolfe added a 1-yard TD run with 55 seconds left in the half to give the hosts a 36-0 lead and enact the mercy rule.

Southmoreland’s defense limited Valley to one first down and minus-17 yards in total offense while also getting into the scoring act itself with a pair of safeties.

The first came in the third quarter when several Scotties swarmed over Valley quarterback Brandon Knuckles for a sack in the end zone. The second came in the fourth quarter when Jake Hull brought down running back Zay Adams in the end zone.

Avella 41, Mapletown 6 – Chas Rush threw for four touchdowns and ran for another as the host Eagles triumphed over the Maples in a non-conference game in the first of two meetings between the schools this year. The two will play again on Oct. 3, also at Avella, in a Tri-County South Conference game.

Rush completed 6 of 9 throws for 132 yards with touchdown passes of 14 and 28 yards to Noah Kimberland, 46 yards to Cody Day and 30 yards to Bryce Wright.

Rush also had 13 carries for 134 yards, including an 84-yard TD run, and Wright added a 69-yard touchdown burst while also converting three of four extra-point kicks.

Kimberland had three catches for 45 yards and the two scores.

Carson Vanata led Mapletown with six carries for 60 yards and a 2-yard touchdown run. Landon Johnson had one reception for 11 yards for the Maples whose leading tackler was Ashton Walker with six.

Riverview 34, Beth-Center 19 – The Raiders pulled away with a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to defeat the visiting Bulldogs in a non-conference game Saturday afternoon.

Beth-Center scored first on Enzo Brown’s 4-yard run in the first quarter with Hunter Bobbs’ extra point making it 7-0.

Riverview tied it later in the quarter on Connor Kmetz’ 10 yard scoring pass to Dom Williams with Matthew Frazier adding the PAT.

Brown’s second touchdown from 17 yards out in the second quarter put B-C in front 13-7 but Miles Eigal’s 8-yard fumble return for a touchdown with Frazier’s extra point gave Riverview a 14-13 halftime advantage.

The Bulldogs reclaimed the lead, 19-14, when Cyncere Cruse ran back to second-half kickoff 85 yards for touchdown.

Lucas Duncan put the Raiders back on top 22-19 with a 10-yard touchdown run later in the third quarter.

Riverview added a 12-yard TD pass from Kmetz to Stotts and 1-yard touchdown run by Max Kratt in the fourth quarter to salt the game away.
