Bulldogs optimistic with 4 returning starters
Now in his third year at the helm of the Beth-Center boys basketball program, Scott Bower is liking where things are trending for this team.
His optimism stems from multiple perspectives.
First, the team returns four starters from last year’s team that made the WPIAL playoffs.
Secondly, the Bulldogs had a successful offseason, and it can only help.
“The open gyms over the summer were well-attended,” said Bower, who has 25 years of coaching under his belt. “The players are excited to get started this year.”
Beth-Center has plenty of experience back with the quartet of returning starters.
Senior guard Jason Zellie leads the way, and he was an All-Section player a year ago after averaging 15.3 points per game (PPG).
A pair of Zellie’s classmates, forwards Brayden Hull and Tyler Kurowski, also return to the lineup, as does junior forward Parker Amos.
Hull averaged 8.3 points per game last season, Kurowski chipped in with 5.1, and Amos came in at just under double figures at 9.8.
Bower listed four other players as “sometimes starters,” and they will all see valuable time.
They include senior Kaleb Stimaker and a trio of sophomores in Hunter Bobbs, Brayden Ozohonish, and Enzo Brown.
Two newcomers that Bowers pointed out were a pair of freshmen in Kaleb Amos and Nicholas Miller.
The Bulldogs will play in Section 3-AA along with Burgettstown, Carmichaels, Chartiers-Houston, Fort Cherry, Jefferson-Morgan, Mapletown, and West Greene.
When asked who the teams to beat in the section might be, Bower highlighted three.
“Jefferson-Morgan, Chartiers-Houston, and Fort Cherry,” he said. “They are the top teams in the section.”
Despite having tough competition in the section, Bower spoke enthusiastically when asked about his top goal for the team.
“Our goal is to win the first section title in school history,” he said with excitement in voice.
