Local roundup: Bulldogs knock off Mikes, 67-48
Jason Zellie scored a game-high 23 points and Brayden Hull followed with 22 to lead Beth-Center past host Carmichaels in Section 3-2A boys basketball action on Tuesday night.
The Bulldogs held a 13-7 lead after one quarter and gradually extended the margin to 26-19 at halftime and 40-30 after three before pulling away in the fourth.
Parker Amos added 14 points for Beth-Center (2-2, 4-3).
Stephen Lewis topped the Mikes (1-2, 1-5) in scoring with 13 points and Brayden Andrews and Chase Ankrom each contributed 11.
Mount Pleasant 59, Brownsville 56 — Kade Hutchinson’s steal led to Gage Valone’s go-ahead layup with 31 seconds left in overtime as the Vikings outlasted the visiting Falcons in a non-section battle.
Mount Pleasant trailed 17-8 after the first quarter and was down by as many as 16 points in the second quarter which ended with Brownsville ahead 33-21.
The Vikings still trailed by 12 after three quarters but rallied with an 18-6 edge in the fourth to tie it at 51-51 and force OT.
Valone led the way with 16 points and was followed by Jordan Grieff (11) and Jonah Townsend (10) for Mount Pleasant (3-5).
Maxime Dieudonne tallied 15 points for the Falcons (0-6) who also got 12 points from Kaden Wimmer, 11 from Jaiden Praster and 10 from Cameron Phillips.
Geibel Catholic 63, St. Joseph 52 — Evan Strimel racked up a game-high 30 points as the visiting Gators stormed back after falling behind 16-4 in the first quarter to earn a Section 2-A victory at St. Joseph.
Geibel out-scored the Spartans 21-9 in the second quarter to pull even at 25-25 at halftime then surged to a 45-35 advantage after three.
Eahn Stevenson (12) and Anthony Nickischer (10) also reached double digits in scoring for the Gators (1-1, 5-3).
Nick Tometsko had 20 points for St. Joseph (1-1, 3-6) which also got 15 points from Ryan McCarthy8 and 10 from John Marino.
McKeesport 71, Uniontown 65 — Lamont Perkins scored nine of his game-high 34 points in overtime as the host Tigers edged the Red Raiders in a Section 1-5A clash.
McKeesport (3-1, 5-2) led 13-10 after one quarter and 30-24 at halftime but Uniontown (1-3, 3-5) out-scored the Tigers 34-28 in the second half to force the extra frame.
Aaron Reeder added 14 points for McKeesport.
Isaac Ellsworth sank five 3-pointers in tallying 28 points for the Red Raiders who also got 18 points from Cam Dugan.
Jefferson-Morgan 66, West Greene 40 — Jeremiah Robertson dropped in a game-high 24 points as the Rockets remained undefeated with a Section 3-2A victory at West Greene.
Jefferson-Morgan led 17-11, 34-13 and 53-28 at the quarter breaks.
Triton Farabee followed Robertson with 13 points and Dayten Marion contributed 10 for J-M (4-0, 8-0).
Matthew Wassil had 11 points and Darren Knight added 10 for the Pioneers (1-2, 1-5)
Gateway 75, Albert Gallatin 34 — Chris Settles was one of four Gators in double figures with 16 points in a Section 1-5A win over the visiting Colonials.
Mykel Bruce-McCrommon (14), Isaiah Allah (13) and Jax Vovaris (10) followed Settles in scoring for Gateway (3-1, 3-2).
Albert Gallatin falls to 0-4 in the section and 2-6 overall.
Franklin Regional 65, Laurel Highlands 52 — Logan Walter tossed in 19 points as the Panthers fought off the host Mustangs in a Section 1-5A game.
Franklin Regional (4-0, 7-1) led 15-10, 30-22 and 47-40 at the quarter breaks.
Tyrone Burton led LH (1-2, 5-3) with a game-high 20 points and Luke Martin followed with 15.
Fort Cherry 91, Mapletown 17 — Greg Alrutz led a group of five Rangers in double figures with 14 points in a Section 3-2A win over the visiting Maples.
Connor Vansickle had 12 points for Fort Cherry (3-1, 4-2), Gavin Grace and Kolton Smith each tallied 11 and Tyler Wolfe added 10.
Ashton Walker led Mapletown (0-4, 0-8) with eight points.
Clairton 92, California 28 — Jeff Thompson had 22 points and Brandon Murphy added 21 in the unbeaten Bears’ Section 1-2A win over the visiting Trojans.
Taris Wooding scored 15 for Clairton (4-0, 5-0) which led 31-5 after the first quarter.
Ben Ziolecki paced California (0-3, 0-6) with 14 points.
Elizabeth Forward 74, Belle Vernon 69 — Daniel Spence poured in 30 points and the host Warriors held off the Leopards in a Section 3-4A game.
Elizabeth Forward led 22-16 after one quarter and 33-32 at halftime before surging to a 58-48 advantage in the third quarter.
Tyler Basic tallied 23 points and Matt Gatto chipped in with 10 for EF (3-0, 5-3).
Dane Daugherty drained eight 3-pointers in ringing up 26 points for Belle Vernon (3-1, 7-3) and was followed by Cam Jenko (16) and Luca Ghilani (12).
Jeannette 69, Frazier 29 — Markus McGowan had 23 points in the visiting Jayhawks’ Section 1-2A win over the Commodores.
Jeannette (4-0, 8-1) also got 14 points from Jayce Powell and 11 from Kymon’e Brown.
Kolby Stewart led Frazier (1-3, 4-6) with 20 points.
Upper St. Clair 74, Connellsville 41 — Ryan Robbins had 18 points ion the host Panthers’ Section 2-6A win over the Falcons.
Andrew Gaither followed with 13 points and Jake Foster chipped with 10 for USC (3-1, 9-1).
Lucas Harwood topped Connellsville (0-4, 2-6) in scoring with 14 points and Christian Thomas added 11.
Southmoreland 60, Ligonier Valley 47 — Noah Felntzer poured in 31 points as the host Scotties triumphed over the Rams in a Section 4-3A game.
Southmoreland trailed 15-14 after the first quarter but surged to leads of 31-27 at halftime and 45-38 after three before pulling away in the fourth.
Brook Pritts added 10 points for the Scotties (2-0, 4-4).
Michael Vargulish-Graver led Ligonier Valley (1-1, 4-4) with 16 points and Simeon Pope had 11.
Boys wrestling
Connellsville 47, Chartiers Valley 17 — The Falcons won seven of eight matches by fall in a non-section victory at Chartiers Valley High School.
Connellsville’s Tommy Gretz (121), Landon Lynn (133), Daniel Smith (139), Kai Vielma (145), Luke (152) and Jake Lilley (160) and Roghan Hollis (285) pinned their opponents.
Nolan Rice earned a technical fall, 21-5, in 3:41 at 127 pounds.
The Colts’ Michael Lawrence and Musabek Sadyrbekov won by major decision at 172 and 189 before Wyar Alozie recorded a 6-3 decision in overtime at 215.
Chartiers Valley’s Jocelyn Ackman won by forfeit at 114.
Neither team had a competitor at 107.
The Falcons improved to 2-2 this season, while the Colts dropped to 4-8.
