Local roundup: Lady Bulldogs win twice during busy tournament day
Doubleheaders are usually reserved for baseball season but Beth-Center’s girls basketball team took the “Let’s play two” motto to the hardwood on Saturday while hosting the Winter Jam Tournament.
The Lady Bulldogs tipped off against Charleroi at 4 p.m. then approximately four hours later took the court to play Albert Gallatin, winning both games, 61-44 over the Lady Cougars and 59-29 over the Lady Colonials.
Violet Trump scored a game-high 24 points in each game for B-C (4-5).
Against Charleroi, Beth-Center built a 14-11 lead in the first quarter then out-scored the Lady Cougars 21-5 in the second to take a commanding 35-16 halftime lead.
Mary Bower followed Trump with 13 points and Kyleigh McDaniel added 12 points for the Lady Bulldogs.
Eden Smith led Charleroi with 19 points and Jaelyn Caruso had eight.
In its second game, Beth-Center was in a tight battle with AG early on and held a 22-21 advantage at halftime. The Lady Bulldogs took complete control in the second half, out-scoring Albert Gallatin 20-4 in third to go up 42-25, then extended the lead in the final frame with a 15-4 edge.
Alexia Fischer joined Trump as a double-digit scorer for B-C with 15 points.
The Lady Colonials (0-7) were paced by Paiton Lovis with 12 points and Mikayla Shea with eight.
Uniontown 69, Carmichaels 16 — Aierra Jenkins lit up the scoreboard with a game-high 29 points as the Lady Raiders cruised past the host Lady Mikes at the Carmichaels Lions Club Tournament.
Jenkins dropped in 10 field goals and was 9 of 12 from the foul line. Lyric McLee followed with 11 points for Uniontown (5-2) and Ambree Long added 10.
Ke’Lani Chun was the top scorer for Carmichaels (1-7) with eight points.
Waynesburg Central 74, Jefferson-Morgan 9 — Peyton Cowell scored 15 points in the Lady Raiders’ win over the Lady Rockets at the Carmichaels Lions Club Tournament.
Tess Pauley followed with 14 points for Waynesburg (7-1) which also got 13 points from Addonae Johnson and 10 from Kendall McKay 10.
Beautiful Medlen was the leading scorer for J-M (4-4) with seven points.
Latrobe 64, Southmoreland 28 — Maggie Maiers scored 21 points as the host Lady Wild Cats triumphed over the Lady Scotties at the Southmoreland Tournament.
Julianna Bulebosh tallied 12 points for Latrobe (5-3).
Leah Moore led Southmoreland (1-11) wit 13 points.
Obama Academy 34, Laurel Highlands 27 — The Lady Eagles (4-3) defeated the Lady Mustangs in the Winter Jam Tournament at Beth-Center to run their winning streak to four games.
Laurel Highlands fell to 2-7.
Boys basketball
Beth-Center 72, Carmichaels 38 — Brayden Hull scored a game-high 21 points as the Bulldogs knocked off the host Mikes at the Carmichaels Lions Club Tournament.
Beth-Center (5-3) led 26-12, 41-20 and 62-31 at the quarter breaks.
Also scoring in double-digits for B-C were Parker Amos (17), Jason Zellie (12) and Brayden Ozohonish (11).
Stephen Lewis topped Carmichaels (1-6) in scoring with 11 points and Scott Maskil Jr. had 10.
Jefferson-Morgan 69, Mapletown 17 — The undefeated Rockets soared out to a 27-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back in defeating the Maples at the Carmichaels Lions Club Tournament.
Jeremiah Robertson and Jaymison Robinson led Jefferson-Morgan (9-0) with 16 points apiece.
Kaleb Evosevich had six points for Mapletown (0-9).
Brashear 59, Geibel Catholic 57 — The Bulls held on to edge the Gators at the Burgettstown Tournament.
Geibel (6-3) fought back from a 32-20 halftime deficit to trail by just 43-40 going into the fourth quarter but fell two points short.
Evan Strimel tallied a game-high 22 points for the Gators who also got 12 points from Seth Dolan and 11 from Anthony Nickischer.
Trevon Rosario-Jones was one of four Brasher (4-7) players to score in double figures with 15 points. He was followed by Nasir Thomas (13), Mason Dick (12) and Ryan White (11).
Uniontown 60, Southmoreland 43 — Nolan Baker led a group of four Red Raiders in double figures with 17 points as Uniontown rolled past the Scotties at the Charleroi Tournament.
Baker was followed in scoring by Isaac Ellsworth (13), Cam Dugan (11) and Chase White (10).
The Red Raiders (4-5) led 31-21 at halftime then out-scored Southmoreland (4-5) 13-6 in the third quarter to take a 44-27 advantage into the fourth.
Noah Felentzer tossed in a game-high 19 points for the Scotties, who also got nine points from Brock Pritts.
Ringgold 79, Brownsville 37 — Takeo Tolliver scored 16 points in the Rams’ win over the Falcons at the Charleroi Tournament.
Dennis Hawkins added 12 points for Ringgold (7-2) and Braylen Lomax chipped in with 11.
Kaden Wimmer was the top scorer for Brownsville (0-7) with 10 points and Jaiden Praster contributed nine points.
Friday’s games
Boys basketball
Geibel Catholic 65, Riverside 64 — Anthony Nickischer rang up 26 points and the Gators came out on top in a tight battle with the Panthers at the Burgettstown Tournament.
Geibel (6-2) led 37-19 at halftime before Riverside (6-3) rallied to within one point, 47-46, at the end of three quarters. Both teams tallied 18 points in the final frame.
Evan Strimel added 19 points for the Gators.
Logan Young tied Nickischer for game-high honors with 26 points for Riverside, which also got 14 points from McCartney Plassmyer and 12 from Cole Becker.
Girls basketball
Hempfield 70, Southmoreland 10 — The Lady Spartans (8-2) beat the Lady Scotties (1-11) at the Latrobe Tournament.
