Uniontown poses for a team photo after defeating East Allegheny at the Charleroi Tournament on Tuesday for the boys basketball program’s 1,900 win. The Red Raiders rank fifth in the state for all-time victories.

Uniontown’s boys basketball program is steeped in history with a deep tradition that is known throughout the state.

The Red Raiders reached an all-time milestone on Tuesday at the Charleroi tournament with their 67-57 victory over East Allegheny.

It was the program’s 1,900th win which ranks fifth in Pennsylvania. Uniontown trails only Reading, Chester, Roman Catholic and Farrell and has the best winning percentage of the group at 74.6%.

“To have 1,900 wins is just phenomenal and there are so many people for decades and decades that have been a part of this,” said Uniontown coach Rob Kezmarsky, who has accounted for 370 of those victories. “Every former player has had a hand in reaching that total.

“Our kids were part of history tonight.”

Two of them earned tournament honors as well.

Isaac Ellsworth sank four 3-pointers in ringing up a game-high 29 points and was voted to the all-tournament first team. Cam Dugan followed with 14 points and was chosen for the all-tournament second team.

The Red Raiders (5-6) also got 10 points from Nolan Baker and nine points from Donovan Coffey.

The Wildcats (6-3) were up 17-15 after the first quarter but Uniontown used a 22-10 advantage in the second to surge to a 37-27 halftime lead and pushed the margin up to 56-40 after three.

Jayden Patterson paced East Allegheny with 20 points and was followed by DJ Warren and Cendric Mack who had 13 apiece.

The Red Raiders were coming off a nail-biting 68-67 loss to South Park in the second game of the three-game tournament despite eight 3-pointers and 31 points from Ellsworth. Uniontown defeated Southmoreland, 60-43, in its tournament opener. The Scotties (5-6) went on to stun South Park (8-2), 64-58, on Tuesday,

“East Allegheny is a good team and they beat Southmoreland pretty easily (52-25), and then Southmoreland beat South Park so it was a very interesting tournament,” Kezmarsky said. “I have a lot of respect for East Allegheny’s coach. This is one of their better teams, which we knew because we played them in the Pittsburgh basketball summer league. They have some very athletic and fundamentally sound post players.

“We had the lead up to 16-17 but they kept chipping away at it. At the end we slowed the game down and did a good job of handling the ball. That was a quality win for us.”

The current Red Raiders were aware that the historic win was within reach.

“I always try to talk to the kids about the history of Uniontown so they realize the tradition and what they’re a part of,” Kezmarsky said. “They’ll always remember they were the team that got us to 1,900.

“Now we want to keep adding wins to it.”
