Local roundup: Lady Mikes, Mount Pleasant girls clinch playoff spots

Ke’Lani Chun’s basket in the final seconds gave Carmichaels a 35-33 Section 3-2A win at Jefferson-Morgan and clinched a WPIAL playoff spot for the Lady Mikes in a girls basketball battle Thursday night.

Carmichaels (3-7, 3-18) held a two-point lead when the Lady Rockets’ Catelynn Teagarden scored on a fast break to knot the score at 33-33 with 30 seconds left. Shun then delivered her game-winning shot with nine seconds remaining.

Joselyn Carter led Carmichaels with 15 points. The win pulled the Lady Mikes into a fourth-place tie in the section with Bentworth. The two split their regular-season series.

Jefferson-Morgan led 12-7 after the first quarter and 16-15 at halftime. The Lady Mikes surged to a 23-22 advantage in the third quarter and survived a tight fight in the final frame.

Brelynn Wood and Bailey Cervone paced the Lady Rockets (0-9, 1-19) with nine and eight points, respectively.

Mount Pleasant 35, Ringgold 29 – Ryleigh Drzal scored 14 points and the Lady Vikings fended off the host Lady Rams to secure a playoff spot in Section 3-3A.

Mount Pleasant (5-9, 5-15) led 10-6 after the first quarter, Ringgold pulled even at 15-15 at halftime but the Lady Vikings used a 9-5 edge in the third to go up 24-20 and out-scored the Lady Rams 11-9 in the fourth to wrap up the victory.

Morgan Gesinski tallied 11 points for Mount Pleasant, which moved into a tie for fifth place with Yough after the Lady Cougars loss to Laurel Highlands.

Jada Gernot had 11 points for Ringgold (1-13, 7-15) which also got 10 points from Alayna Macioce.

West Greene 55, Avella 52 – Kendra Tharp poured in 26 points, including six in overtime, as the visiting Lady Pioneers edged Avella in overtime in a Section 2-A clash.

Ava Franks rang up a game-high 27 points for the Lady Eagles (4-10, 9-13) who were knocked out of the playoff race with the loss.

The game was tied 10-10 heading into the second quarter before Avella grabbed leads of 22-16 at halftime and 32-31 after three. West Greene (8-6, 15-7) surged to a three-point lead late in regulation when Frank hit a long 3-pointer at the buzzer to force overtime.

Undeterred, the Lady Pioneers out-scored the hosts 8-5 in the extra frame to earn the win.

Madelyn Roberts added 15 points for West Greene which was just 9 for 29 from the foul line but still won its fourth game in as many days. The Lady Pioneers finished in fourth place in the section.

Geibel Catholic 67, Serra Catholic 53 – Emma Larkin scored 33 points to help the Lady Gators clinch sole possession of the Section 2-A championship with a victory at Serra Catholic.

Geibel led just 24-23 at halftime but out-scored the Lady Eagles (10-4, 12-9) 43-30 in the second half.

Janiah Darnell followed Larkin with 14 points for the Lady Gators (13-1, 21-1).

Abby Genes made four 3-pointers in scoring 30 points to lead Serra and Bella Dumbroski contributed 13 points.

Laurel Highlands 53, Yough 18 – Taylor Schwertlfeger scored a game-high 12 points in the Lady Mustangs’ Section 3-4A victory at Yough.

Aierra Jenkins followed with 10 points for Laurel Highlands (11-3, 16-5) which led 19-0 after the first quarter.

The Lady Mustangs finished the section in third place after South Park remained in second thanks to its win over first-place Elizabeth Forward.

Hailey Bock had six points to lead Yough (5-9, 11-11), which finished in a fifth-place tie with Mount Pleasant to earn a berth in the postseason.

Trinity 51, Uniontown 25 – Bentley Layhew scored 14 points in the Lady Hillers’ Section 4-5A victory at Uniontown.

Gabby Rieg and Kimari Behrens followed with 10 points each for Trinity (5-7, 10-9).

Emily Myers tossed in 14 points for the Lady Raiders (1-11, 5-16) who also got five points from Lyric McLee.

Waynesburg Central 44, Charleroi 26 – Peyton Cowell rang up 18 points as the host Lady Raiders knocked off the Lady Cougars in a Section 3-3A game.

Briena Coon and Mya Smith chipped in with six points apiece for Waynesburg (3-8, 8-12).

Eden Smith tied for game-high honors with 18 points for Charleroi (0-12, 0-22).

Belle Vernon 52, Southmoreland 21 – Aubrey Brown contributed 15 points and six rebounds to the Lady Leopards’ Section 3-4A victory over the visiting Lady Scotties.

Belle Vernon (8-6, 11-11) also got six rebounds from Skylar Salay, five boards from Saylor Lee and six assists from Abby Russell.

Ashley Seder hit two 3-pointers in scoring nine points to pace Southmoreland (1-12, 3-17).

California 56, Beth-Center 47 – Olivia Gibson tallied 15 points and the Lady Trojans won at Beth-Center to finish in a second-place tie with the Lady Bulldogs in Section 3-2A.

California led 12-8, 22-18 and 37-34 at the quarter breaks.

Addison Gregory added 13 points for the Lady Trojans (7-3, 11-6) who also got 12 points from Leah Hartley.

Violet Trump scored 11 points for Beth-Center (7-3, 13-8) which also got 10 points from Callie Dorsey.

Frazier 50, Jeannette 42 – Chloe Harger’s 19 points sparked the Lady Commodores to a Section 4-2A win over the visiting Lady Jayhawks.

The game was tied 21-21 at halftime before Frazier (2-8, 6-16) surged to a 42-29 lead after three quarters and the Lady Commodores hung on from there.

Allie Monack added 14 points and Malana Burton chipped in with 13 for Frazier.

Navarah Smith tossed in a game-high 27 points for Jeannette (0-10, 4-15).

Canon-McMillan 62, Connellsville 32 – Sam Miller had 18 points in the Lady Big Macs’ Section 2-6A victory at Connellsville.

Lauren Borella (11) and Madison Clair (10) also hit double digits for Canon-McMillan (6-4, 12-8).

Elizabeth Painter led the Lady Falcons (0-10, 3-17) with 12 points.

Bishop Canevin 57, Mapletown 20 – Isabella Sysak and Kya Cooley each tossed in 16 points in the Lady Crusaders’ Section 2-A victory at Mapletown.

Natalie Kirsch followed with 10 points for Bishop Canevin (6-8, 11-9).

Treslee Weston totaled eight points and six rebounds for Mapletown (1-13, 3-19), which led 9-8 after the first quarter. The Lady Maples also got 11 rebounds from Sophia Jennings.

Boys basketball

Brownsville 64, California 61 – Kaden Wimmer churned out 19 points and Jaiden Praster followed with 17 as the Falcons knocked off the Trojans (3-18) in a non-section game.

Brownsville (5-16) also got 13 points from Preston Rosado and 10 from Max Dieudonne.

Boys Swimming

Elizabeth Forward 94, Belle Vernon 51 – Brady Malekovich won the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle and combined with Gaige Watson, Tim Reda and Derek Milkovich in Belle Vernon’s 400 freestyle relay victory but the Leopards (1-3, 7-4) fell to the Warriors in a Section 5-2A meet.

Reda also posted a pair of individual wins, taking first in the 200 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke. Watson won the 200 IM.

Girls Swimming

Elizabeth Forward 85, Belle Vernon 70 – Megan Shusteric and Josie Nikolic both had two individual wins and combined with Ava Bosetti and Grace Newbould to win the 200 medley relay but the Lady Leopards (1-3, 6-5) lost to the Lady Warriors.

Shusteric won the 100 butterfly and 200 freestyle and Nikolic was first in the 100 freestyle and the 100 backstroke. Bosetti was victorious in the 100 breaststroke.
