Local roundup: Carmichaels rides big first inning to win over Charleroi
Andino Vecchiolla’s two-run double sparked a six-run first inning that helped propel the Carmichaels Copperheads to a 7-3 win over the visiting Charleroi Magicians in Fayette County Baseball League action Tuesday.
Both teams entered the game with 3-0 records.
Carmichaels’ big first started with a one-out walk by Alex VanSickle and a single by Santino Marra. Noah Mildren hit an RBI double and Vecchiolla followed with a two-run double and then scored on an error to make it 4-0. Later in the inning Gianni Cantini hit a run-scoring single and Dom Colarusso was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to cap the rally.
Mildren had two hits and VanSickle added a double for the Copperheads.
Winning pitcher Ethan Erhard allowed two runs on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts in 6 ⅓ innings.
Colton Brightwell had two for the Magicians (3-1) who also got a two-run single from Jimmy Lanzi. Remington Lessman took the loss. Lorenzo Glasser pitched well in relief for Charleroi, surrendering just one run on two hits and a walk with four strikeouts in five innings.
Monday
Connellsville 4, Charleroi 2 – Alex VanSickle homered, doubled and knocked in two runs as Connellsville improved to 7-0 with a win at Charleroi in a Fayette American Legion baseball clash.
Matthew Firestone also had two hits and two RBIs and Grayden Gillott added a double and got the final two outs to earn the save for Connellsville.
Winning pitcher Ethan Porreca gave up one unearned run on two hits with four walks and 10 strikeouts in four innings.
VanSickle followed with 2 ⅓ innings of relief, giving up one unearned run to earn a hold.
Firestone’s RBI single in the first put Connellsville ahead to stay and VanSickle made it 3-0 with his two-run blast in the third.
Losing pitcher Brock Henderson drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the inning to get Charleroi (2-5) on the board but VanSickle doubled and Firestone followed with a run-scoring single in the sixth to make it 4-1.
Kaden Woods’ RBI single for Charleroi made it 4-2 in the seventh and the hosts had the potential tying run on first and winning run at the plate when Gillott entered and slammed the door with a pair of strikeouts.
Henderson pitched a complete game, surrendering four runs on nine hits with one walk and nine strikeouts.
Belle Vernon 13, Colonial 0 – JB Crovak drove in four runs, three with a bases-clearing double in a six-run sixth inning, as Belle Vernon blanked host Colonial.
Cy Herchelroath also doubled for Belle Vernon (2-1) and Nate Grimm went 2 for 2 with two runs scored.
Winning pitcher Cole Matusik didn’t allow a hit in four scoreless innings with five walks and six strikeouts.
Zane Hixson had the lone hit for Colonial (0-4). Losing pitcher Dailan McManus gave up four earned runs on three hits with five walks and four strikeouts in 4 ½ innings.
Carmichaels 2, Oakland 1 – Andino Vecchiolla hit a tie-breaking RBI single in the top of the fourth inning and Gavin Pratt and Gianni Cantini combined on a four-hitter as the visiting Copperheads edged the Oaks in a Fayette County Baseball League battle.
Pratt allowed one run on three hits with three walks and two strikeouts in five innings to earn the win. Cantini struck out five while giving one hin and one walk in two scoreless frames to pick up the save.
Carmichaels (3-0) took a 1-0 in the top of the first when Dom Colarusso singled, went to second on an error, took third on Aaron Previsky’s ground out and scored on Santino Marra’s single.
Oakland (2-3) tied it in the bottom of the inning when Wenkai Campbell singled, went to third on Alex Kennell’s double and scored on Joe Sneathen’s ground out.
Losing pitcher Ty Wickline went the distance, surrendering one earned run on five hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.
