Local roundup: Lady Mustangs top AG, clinch soccer playoff spot

Laurel Highlands earned a 2-0 victory at Albert Gallatin in girls soccer action on Monday night to clinch a WPIAL playoff spot in Section 3-3A.

Ella Doman and Camryn McClean knocked in the goals for the fourth-place Lady Mustangs who evened their overall record at 6-6-1 and improved their section mark to 4-5.

Addison Stroko and Amelia Michael combined on the shutout for LH.

Albert Gallatin fell to 2-7 in the section and 2-11 overall.

Laurel Highlands can finish in a third-place tie with Oakland Catholic if it can defeat the Lady Eagles (5-4, 7-7) at Mustang Field on Wednesday. The Lady Mustangs lost at Oakland Catholic, 3-1, on Sept 16 in their first meeting.

Mount Pleasant 4, Southmoreland 0 — Morgan Gesinski recorded a hat trick as the Lady Vikings wrapped up the Section 4-2A championship with a win over the visiting Lady Scotties (5-4, 7-7-1).

Mount Pleasant led 3-0 at halftime with all three goals by Gesinski.

Raygan Mizikar scored a goal in the second half for the Lady Vikings (9-0, 12-3-1).

Goalkeeper Laurel Rummel notched the shutout.

Brownsville 0, Waynesburg Central 0 — The Lady Falcons (4-3-2, 9-4-2) and Lady Raiders (4-3-2, 7-3-2) played to a scoreless draw in their Section 2-A match.

The two remain tied for third place in the section and both have clinched WPIAL playoff spots.

Bentworth 2, Beth-Center 1 — Bella Moyer scored both goals for the first-place Lady Bearcats (9-0, 13-1-1) in a Section 2-A victory over the visiting Lady Bulldogs (2-7, 6-9) on senior night.

Bentworth’s senior class hasn’t lost a home game in the past two seasons.

The Lady Bearcats led 1-0 at halftime.

Belle Vernon 1, Keystone Oaks 0 — Ali Watson’s second-half goal gave the host Lady Leopards a Section 1-2A win over the Golden Eagles (6-4, 7-8).

Abby Russell assisted on the goal. Goalkeepers Rory Bastedo and Skylar Salay combined for seven saves in recording the shutout for Belle Vernon (8-2-1, 11-4-1).

It was the fourth win in a row for the Lady Leopards, all by shutout.

Chartiers-Houston 9, California 1 — The Lady Buccaneers (5-2-2, 7-4-2) got two goals apiece from Ali Wingard, Cecilia Hess and Payten Conner in a Section 2-A win over the host Lady Trojans (0-9, 1-10).

Upper St. Clair 5, Connellsville 1 — Natalia DiSora had two goals as the Lady Panthers (4-4-1, 7-4-2) wrapped up a playoff spot with a Section 2-4A victory over the host Lady Falcons.

Hailey Washington knocked in the lone goal for Connellsville (1-8, 3-10-1).

Girls volleyball

Brownsville 3, Charleroi 0 — Aijanae Foster led the Lady Falcons with 11 kills and Skyler Gates totaled 10 kills and four blocks in the Lady Falcons’ Section 3-2A victory over the Lady Cougars (0-10, 0-13).

Brownsville won by scores of 25-17, 25-19 and 25-12.

Kenzie Adams had 22 assists and Haylee Feich chipped with 14 service points for the Lady Falcons (9-1, 12-1) who also got three kills and seven service points from Lena Richichar.

Washington 3, Geibel Catholic 0 — The host Lady Prexies swept the Lady Gators in a non-section match.

Washington (5-6) won by scores of 25-20, 25-17 and 25-13.

Mallory Clemmer had nine kills, 15 digs and two aces for Geibel (2-13), which also got seven kills, 17 digs and two blocks from Nolace Petrosky and three aces from Mia Speeney.

Belle Vernon 3, Gateway 0 — Aubrey Brown rang up 13 kills and Mallory Wasicek contributed eight kills and eight digs as the visiting Lady Leopards swept the gritty Lady Gators (1-9) in a non-section match.

Belle Vernon (11-3) won by scores of 25-22, 26-24 and 25-21.

Lyla Teets had five kills, Joy Johnson contributed 15 digs and Abby Nickolls chipped in with 25 assists for the Lady Leopards, who also got seven digs from Mailey Hayes.

Boys cross country

Belle Vernon 15, Steel Valley 50 — The Leopards ran to victory over the Ironmen in a Division II, Section 5 meet.

Girls cross country

Belle Vernon 15, Steel Valley 50 — The Lady Leopards triumphed over Steel Valley in a Division II, Section 5 meet.

Boys golf

WPIAL team semifinals — Jefferson-Morgan and Waynesburg Central both came up short of advancing in the WPIAL Class 2A Boys Team semifinals.

The Rockets turned in a score of 466 in the 10-team field at Champions Lake in Bolivar, but it was Elizabeth Forward (387), Freeport (397) and North Catholic (398) who advanced to the finals.

At Hickory Heights Golf Club in Bridgeville, the Raiders had a score of 420 in the 11-team field although it wasn’t enough to finish in the top three to advance. Shady Side Academy (393) was first and was followed by Avonworth (397) and Beaver (401).

The finals will be held at Cedarbrook’s Gold Course on Thursday.
