Colonials, Rockets, Scotties only area teams at 3-0 after Week Two

Running behind the blocking of Brayden Hinzy, who normally played quarterback, Uniontown’s Cam Dugan fights for the goal line but is dragged down by Brownsville’s Cynseir Douglas in last Friday’s game at Bill Power Stadium. The Red Raiders play at Cupples Stadium in Pittsburgh this afternoon against Taylor Allderdice High School while Brownsville has a bye week.

The dust has cleared after Week Two of the high school football season and only three area teams remain perfect at 3-0.

Albert Gallatin, Jefferson-Morgan and Southmoreland are all undefeated heading into tonight’s games.

The Colonials are coming off an emotional 28-14 win over Fayette County rival Connellsville at Falcon Stadium, the Rockets extended their regular-season winning streak to 14 and have won 18 of their last 19 games after pulling away for a 26-10 victory at Burgettstown, and the Scotties kept first-year coach Dustin Shoaf’s record spotless with an impressive 54-7 win over Laurel Highlands at Russ Grimm Field.

The trio will shoot to go 4-0 with independent AG hosting Northern Garrett of Maryland (0-1), Southmoreland moving up a class with a non-conference game at 4A Blackhawk (1-2) and J-M opening Class A Tri-County South play at Mapletown (1-2).

While the Scotties may be 3-0, that’s not how quarterback Dawson Wolfe sees it.

“We have the same mindset every week,” said Wolfe, who accounted for five touchdowns (three rushing, two passing) in the win over LH. “We don’t worry about anyone else besides ourselves. We’re looking to be 1-0 every week.”

The Rockets are one of eight teams with conference openers.

Other games in the TCS are Bentworth (2-1) at California (2-1), Carmichaels (1-1) at Beth-Center (0-3) and West Greene (0-3) at Avella (3-0). The Eagles have been a surprise so far in sweeping their three non-conference games to already match last year’s win total.

Frazier (2-1) is another team that has equaled its total wins from a year ago under first-year coach Tony Battaglini. The Commodores kick off Eastern Conference play at home against Jeannette (2-1).

Waynesburg Central (2-1) opens its Class 2A Century Conference slate at home against perennial power Washington (2-1), coached by Albert Gallatin graduate Mike Bosnic. The Raiders upset the host Prexies 21-13 a year ago on their way to earning a playoff spot.

Three Fayette County teams will hit the road with the Mustangs (2-1) heading to Indiana (0-3) for a non-conference game while independent Uniontown (2-1) faces Taylor Allderdice (2-1) of the City League in their second 3:30 p.m. game at Cupples Stadium in Pittsburgh this season and independent Connellsville (1-2) visits Spring Mills (1-1) of West Virginia.

The Red Raiders beat Perry on Aug. 29, 12-9, also in an afternoon game at Cupples Stadium.

The Cardinals present a different look this week for the Falcons.

“They’re really athletic and they’re a spread (offense) so we’ve got some work to do in the secondary,” said Jace McClean, one of Connellsville’s three head coaches. “We’re going from two weeks in a row now playing against a Wing-T (Meadville and AG) and now we’re going up against a spread so we’ll be changing the defense up a little bit.”

Also playing non-conference games are Mount Pleasant (1-2) which hosts Ambridge (0-3) and Belle Vernon (1-1) which hosts McKeesport (1-2).

Brownsville is off this week after suffering a nail-biting 34-27 loss at Uniontown.

All games, with the exception of the Red Raiders and Allderdice, are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
