Local roundup: Leopards’ Mocello wins section title, advances to WPIAL golf final

Belle Vernon’s Jordan Mocello shot a 1-under-par 71 at the Cedarbrook Gold Course to earn medalist honors at the Section 2-3A boys golf qualifier on Monday to earn a spot in the WPIAL Class 3A individual golf championship at Butler Golf Club on Sept. 29.
The Leopards’ Jack Edwards carded a 74 to also go under the target score of 81 and qualify for the final.
Section 2-2A qualifier — Southmoreland’s Brody Charnesky was one of four golfers to best the target score at Hannastown Golf Club and qualify for the WPIAL Class 2A individual golf championship at Valleybrook Country Club in McMurray on Sept. 30.
Carmichaels 213, Jefferson-Morgan 213 — The Mikes nipped the visiting Rockets in a one-hole tiebreaker, 17-20, to pull out a Section 3-2A win at Carmichaels Golf Course.
Carmichaels’ Eli Hastings and Connor Lapana and Jefferson-Morgan’s Urijah Teasdale all shot a 3-over-par 40 to tie for medalist honors.
Anthony Post shot a 43 and Jayden Kerley and Cooper Richards each carded a 45 for the Mikes (8-4, 8-5).
Following Teasdale for J-M (9-3, 9-6) were Dominic Sowden with a 41, Miles Sowden with a 42 and Jack Shaffer and Trenton Sowden who both shot 45.
McGuffey 206, Brownsville 225 — Josh Rusmisel shot a 1-over-par 38 and Landon Hatfield was right behind with a 39 in the Highlanders’ Section 3-2A win over the host Falcons at Rohanna’s Golf Course.
Also scoring for McGuffey were Logen Hughes (41), Noah Sibert (43) and Dominic Amos (45).
Ava Rohland led Brownsville with a 41 and was followed by Dom Capan (42), Ben Vojacek (43), Adam Vojacek (45) and Hunter McDonald (54).
Girls golf
Elizabeth Forward 176, Connellsville 250 — Mya Morgan was the medalist with a 2-over-par 37 as the undefeated Lady Warriors triumphed over the host Lady Falcons in a Section 3-3A match at Pleasant Valley Golf Club.
Sydney Boyd shot a 42 for EF (11-0, 12-0), Alizabeth Leezer was next with a 45 and Lily Ash had a 52.
Connellsville (2-8,, 2-9) was paced by Addie Richer’s 55. She was followed by Kourtney Callahan with a 63 and Maddie Bigam and Layla Rupp who each had a 66.
Girls volleyball
Uniontown 3, Turkeyfoot Valley 0 — Ava Livingood had 12 of Uniontown’s 28 kills in a 3-0 sweep at Turkeyfoot Valley in a non-section match.
The Lady Raiders (4-2) won by scores of 25-9, 25-14 and 25-14.
Maggie Campbell contributed 11 assists for Uniontown and Kathleena Orendorff recorded five of the Lady Raiders’ 20 aces.
Bentworth 3, Mapletown 1 — Addison Pysh had 12 kills and Zoie McDonald piled up 28 assists and six aces as the Lady Bearcats beat the host Lady Maples in a non-section match.
Scores were 27-25, 17-25, 25-11, 25-23.
Bentworth (3-4) also got eight kills from Nora Lindley and seven kills from Sofia Gaussa.
Rowan Eisiminger had seven kills, six digs and five aces and Marley Shiflett contributed five kills, 12 assists, four digs and two aces for Mapletown (2-4). The Lady Maples also got eight kills, seven digs and two aces from Treslee Weston, 11 digs from Makenna Lotspeich and four aces, three digs and two blocks from Leah Williamson.
Albert Gallatin 3, Carmichaels 0 — Paityn Goletz totaled seven aces, eight assists, five digs and three kills in the Lady Colonials’ victory over the host Lady Mikes in a non-section match.
AG (1-5) won by scores of 25-18, 25-19 and 25-15.
Mikayla Shea had seven digs, four kills and three aces, and Riylee Abel rang up nine digs, five assists and two kills for Albert Gallatin, which also got nine digs and three aces from Gabby DeLorenzo, five kills and four aces from Gabby Penrose, three kills and two blocks from Isabelle Usher, six digs from Lily Mick and four digs from Danica Sterbutzel.
Carmichaels falls to 2-6.
Belle Vernon 3, Frazier 2 — Aubrey Brown rang 19 kills and Victoria Alexander had 17 as the Lady Leopards roared back after dropping the first two sets to earn a non-section victory at Frazier in a five-set battle.
Belle Vernon won by scores of 23-25, 22-25, 25-22, 25-20 and 17-15.
Mia Roebuck and Mallory Wasicek added 12 and nine kills, respectively, for Belle Vernon (5-2) which also got 47 assists and six aces from Abby Nickolls, seven digs and four aces from Mailey Hayes and 20 digs from Joy Johnson.
Allie Monack had 21 kills and 23 assists for the Lady Commodores (3-2). Frazier also got 10 kills, 16 assists and 13 digs from Morgan Fisher, 13 digs from Addison Hiles and six blocks from Addison Schultz.
Girls soccer
Mount Pleasant 8, Southmoreland 0 — Morgan Gesinski scored three goals and Sophia Coppola knocked in a pair in the first-place Lady Vikings’ Section 4-2A win at Southmoreland.
Mount Pleasant (4-0, 6-1-1) also got one goal apiece from Camryn Kapr, Brooklyn Ulery and Jaden Kantorik. Laurel Rummel earned the shutout in goal for the Lady Vikings who led 3-0 at halftime.
The Lady Scotties are now 2-2 in section play and 3-4-1 overall.
Brownsville 4, Waynesburg Central 3 — The Lady Falcons edge the host Lady Raiders in overtime for a Section 2-A victory.
Brownsville upped its record to 2-1-1 in the section and 6-2-1 overall. Waynesburg fell to 2-2 and 5-2.
Bentworth 1, Beth-Center 0 — Brielle Dillon’s first-half goal was the only scoring in the Lady Bearcats’ Section 2-A win at Beth-Center.
Bella Moyer assisted on the goal for Bentworth (4-0, 7-1-1) which sits alone in first place in the standings.
The Lady Bulldogs fell to 1-3 in the section and 4-3 overall.
Belle Vernon 8, Charleroi 0 — Courtney Martin had two goals and two assists in the Lady Leopards’ Section 1-2A victory over the visiting Lady Cougars.
Ali Watson tallied a pair of goals and Kesley Roskovich chipped in a goal and two assists for Belle Vernon (4-1-1, 6-2-1) which also got a goal and an assist each from Jordyn McDowell and Saylor Lee, a goal from Cayden Cameron and an assist from Chessa Mertz.
Charleroi’s record drops to 0-5 in the section and 0-7 overall

Girls tennis
Mount Pleasant 5, Jeannette 0 — The Lady Vikings won three matches to go along with a pair of forfeits in defeating the visiting Lady Jayhawks in a Section 1-2A clash.
Mount Pleasant got singles victories on the court from Belle Fullman and Autumn Jurkovic-Kuzma along with a doubles win from Danica Trainer and Sam Walter.
