Guthrie, Wilson, Renner to be inducted into West Greene HOF
West Greene will add three more members to its Pioneer Athletic Hall of Fame tonight.
Kevin Guthrie, Madison Renner and Arnold Wilson will be inducted during ceremonies beginning at 6:30 tonight at Kennedy Field prior to the kickoff of West Greene’s football game against Jefferson-Morgan.
Following is a capsule on each inductee:
Kevin Guthrie
Guthrie is a 1967 graduate who was a four-year letterman in basketball, a three-year letterman in football and a one-year letterman in track and field.
Guthrie scored 1,210 points in basketball and was the first player in Greene County history to be a four-time member of the all-county team.
He was also all-county twice in football in 1965-66 and was the Greene County scoring champion in the former season with 90 points.
Guthrie won a WPIAL gold medal in track and field in the high jump and qualified for the PIAA championships his senior year.
He was a Lions Club student of the month and went on to graduate from West Virginia University with a bachelor’s degree in finance.
Guthrie served in the National Guard from 1971 to 1977 as a member of the 1st Battalion, 201st Field Artillery unit in Kingwood, West Virginia.
Arnold Wilson
Wilson is a 1972 graduate who was a four-year letterman in football, a three-year letterman in basketball and track and field and a one-year letterman in baseball.
Wilson was the Greene County football scoring champion in 1972 with 108 points and was named player of the year by the Observer-Reporter and Greene County Messenger that season when he amassed 3,000 all-purpose yards and was nominated to play in the Pennsylvania Big 33 game.
In track, Wilson was a two-time WPIAL champion in the high jump, winning the gold medal in 1971 and 1972, setting a school record at 6 feet, 4 inches. He also won a WPIAL gold medal in the 100 his senior year with a time of 9.86 seconds, setting another school record, and went on to earn a PIAA medal in that event. Wilson was part of West Greene’s 880 relay team that season which earned a sixth-place medal at the WPIAL meet
Wilson was the overall MVP at the 1972 Mountaineer Relays and helped the Washington-Greene team finish as runner-up.
Wilson was a Little League youth football coach and served as president of the football and wrestling booster clubs at West Greene.
Madison Renner
Renner is a 2018 graduate who was a four-year member of the softball team and earned one letter in volleyball.
Renner was a key member of one of the greatest runs in West Greene’s prestigious softball history as a pitcher and hitter, helping the Lady Pioneers win three consecutive section and WPIAL championships from 2016 to 2018 under coach Bill Simms. West Greene finished as a PIAA runner-up in 2016 before claiming back-to-back state championships in 2017 and 2018.
Renner was named first team all-state three times and was the Pennsylvania Class A Player of the Year in 2018. She also was named all-county four times.
Renner started all 100 games of her career from 2015 to 2018 and totaled 34 pitching wins, 257 strikeouts, 16 shutouts and three no-hitters, including two perfect games from the circle. At the plate, Renner had a career batting average of .529 with 163 hits, 30 doubles, 33 home runs and 199 RBIs.
She was named player of the year by Greenesports.net, twice by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and three times by the Herald-Standard.
