Albert Gallatin’s Aidan Garcia (58) attempts to track down Uniontown’s Marcus Evans during last Friday night’s game in York Run. The unbeaten Colonials travel to Maryland to play Allegany tonight while the Red Raiders host Martins Ferry.

Tragedy at Carrick High School on Wednesday forced the school to cancel its game at Uniontown tonight.

A student was accused of stabbing three other students at Carrick during school hours Wednesday with one being critically injured, according to authorities. The school alerted Uniontown Area High School that it opted not to have its team play tonight following the violent event.

The Red Raiders, like Carrick, an independent team, will instead host Martins Ferry of Ohio, which had an opening after another independent team, Brownsville, cancelled its game that was originally scheduled for there tonight.

A press release from Uniontown on Thursday included the following:

“The Uniontown Area School District extends its deepest sympathies to the students, staff, and families of Carrick High School following the unfortunate event that has led to the cancellation of their upcoming football game. We are saddened to hear of the violence that has impacted their community and we stand with them during this difficult time.

“While we were looking forward to a competitive game, the safety and well-being of all students is of the utmost importance. We fully support Carrick High School’s decision to prioritize their community’s healing and safety.”

The Red Raiders (2-3) are coming off a 46-10 loss at Albert Gallatin. Martins Ferry is 2-2.

Following last week’s game, Uniontown coach Tim Bukowski stressed that he would like to see his team continue to improve overall, especially in the trenches.

“We knew we’d have our hands full,” Bukowski said after the loss at AG. “They’ve got a senior-oriented team that can push you around a little bit up front.

“We’re young. We have one senior on the field besides our kicker. We have a lot of guys who have a lot of growing up to do and have to get physically stronger to compete with teams that are going to try to do what they just did.”

The Colonials are one of three area teams, along with Jefferson-Morgan and Southmoreland, that sport a 5-0 record at the halfway point of the regular season.

Only one of those three has begun their conference slate, that being the Rockets (2-0, 5-0) who will play their third Class A Tri-County South game at Kennedy Field tonight against West Greene (1-1, 1-4).

The Pioneers will induct their Hall of Fame Class of 2025-26 before kickoff.

Jefferson-Morgan has won 16 straight regular-season games and 20 of its last 21 under coach Shane Ziats. J-M senior Deakyn DeHoet is the Herald-Standard Touchdown Club leader with 100 points.

The Scotties (5-0) and first-year coach Dustin Shoaf open their Class 3A Interstate Conference schedule with a test at Derry (3-2).

The Colonials (5-0) are independent so do not play in a conference, however they have a tough road challenge at Allegany (1-2) in Cumberland, Maryland.

AG coach Drew Dindl now has a 34-30 record in his eighth year at AG and his mark is 34-20 after the Colonials dropped out of the WPIAL to be an independent following an 0-10 first season.

“We’re figuring out how to win,” said Dindl, whose Colonials defeated visiting Uniontown, 46-10, last week. “Before (being an independent) we kept getting kicked when we were down. Now we’re having a little bit of success and the kids know how to win. That needs to be taught, too. You would get beat up and always think you’re going to lose, but now we don’t think that. They come out and fight and fight.

“This is a scrappy group. We’ve seen in a couple games where in the fourth quarter we’re taking over. It’s definitely a testament to these guys putting the work in and they’re not getting down if things go bad like they used to years ago.”

Dindl expects a tough game against the Campers, who won at AG, 26-14, last year.

“Next week’s a really good measuring stick for us,” Dindl said following the win over the Red Raiders. “We’ve got a good Allegany team we’re about to play. That’s going to tell us how good we really are.”

The game kicks off at 6:30 p.m. All other games involving area teams kick off at 7.

Waynesburg Central (0-1, 2-3) played its Class AA Century Conference game Thursday night against Seton LaSalle (2-0, 4-1) at Dormont Stadium, due to a Rebels scheduling conflict.

Connellsville (1-4) plays at Butler (3-2) in a matchup of independent teams. Brownsville (0-4) is scheduled to play Carrick at Cupples Stadium next Friday.

Laurel Highlands and Belle Vernon open Class 4A Big Six Conference action at home.

The Mustangs (2-3) host an improved Chartiers Valley squad that, at 4-1, has already exceeded last year’s win total, while the Leopards (1-3) take on perennial juggernaut Thomas Jefferson (4-1).

Like Southmoreland, Mount Pleasant (3-2) begins Interstate Conference play as the Vikings host Yough (2-3).

Other Tri-County South games tonight are California (2-0, 4-1) at Mapletown (0-2, 1-4), Avella (1-1, 4-2) at Beth-Center (1-1, 1-4) and Bentworth (1-1, 3-2) at Carmichaels (0-2, 1-3).

In the Class A Eastern Conference, Frazier (0-2, 2-3) will try to snap a two-game losing streak with a home game against Brentwood (1-1, 3-2).
