Local roundup: Morgan stars as Mustangs defeat Brownsville
Ramaree Morgan knocked in three runs with a double and a single and was the winning pitcher as Laurel Highlands beat visiting Brownsville for its first win of the season in non-section baseball action on Thursday.
The Mustangs (1-5) got all the runs they would need with two in the first and two in the second in building a 4-0 lead.
The Falcons pushed across a run in the fifth against reliever Andrew Gallick but LH put up three more runs in the sixth to go up 7-1 and hung on from there.
Morgan, a freshman, allowed two hits and three walks in four scoreless innings with five strikeouts.
Gallick finished from there to earn the save. He surrendered two earned runs on five hits with no walks and five strikeouts in covering the final three frames.
Braylon Schoch singles twice and drove in a run for Laurel Highlands, which also got two hits apiece from Nick Crouch and Jack Johns and a single and an RBI from Noah Lion.
Nash Petroff had a double, single and two RBIs and Jeremiah McDonald also contributed a double and a single with on RBI for Brownsville (2-3), which also got two hits from Elijah Patterson.
Losing pitcher Benjamin Vojacek gave up one earned run on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts in four innings.
FRAZIER 7, CHARTIERS-HOUSTON 5 – Tyler Morrison was 3 for 3 with a pair of doubles and scored three runs and winning pitcher Brant Alekson pitched a complete game in the host Commodores’ Section 1-2A win over the Buccaneers.
Frazier (2-1, 4-2) built a 4-0 lead with three runs in the first and one in the second but Chartiers-Houston (2-2, 3-4) surged in front with a five-run fourth that included a two-run hit by Aaron Walsh.
The Commodores answered with two runs inn the bottom of the fourth to reclaim the lead, 6-5, and tacked on an insurance run in the fifth.
Alekson gave up nine hits and five walks with three strikeouts in going the distance.
Chase Fulmer doubled, singled and drove in two runs and Noah Bachinski had three RBIs for Frazier, which also got two hits from Logan Solomon and a single and an RBI each from Nick Porter and Tyler Jerico.
Walsh had a double, single and two RBIs and Brady Gotfredson went 3 for 3 for the Buccaneers.
AVELLA 9, WAYNESBURG CENTRAL 2 – Chas Rush hit a double, knocked in three runs and was the winning pitcher as the visiting Eagles triumphed over the Raiders in a non-section game.
Avella rang up four runs in the first and stayed in control the rest of the way.
Luca Davis had a single and three RBIs and Cam Ullom had one hit and two RBIs for the Eagles (6-1), who also got a double and single from Bryce Wright and a double from Noah Kimberland.
Grant Pack hit a two-run homer for Waynesburg (1-6) which also got two hits from losing pitcher Jarett Tretinik.
BENTWORTH 4, CARMICHAELS 2 – Clint Havanis had three hits, including a pair of doubles, in the Bearcats’ non-section win at Carmichaels.
Ty Watson added a pair of RBIs for Bentworth (2-3).
Jordan Davis knocked in both run for the Mikes (4-2) who also got a double from Dominic Yazzani.
SOUTHMORELAND 11, EAST ALLEGHENY 5 – Brenden Geho was 4 for 4 with a home run, two doubles and five RBIs in the Scotties’ Section 3-3A victory over the East Allegheny.
Peyton Bann added a double and three RBIs for Southmoreland (1-4, 1-6) which picked up its first win of the season by rallying from a 5-3 deficit with seven runs in the fifth inning.
The Scotties also got a single, double and RBI from Mason Myers, two hits and an RBI from Lane Keefer and a double from Jake Govern.
Winning pitcher Cameron Underwood allowed just two hits and no walks with four strikeouts in four scoreless innings of relief.
Eric Gibbons went 4 for 4 for the Wild Cats (0-3, 0-4), who also got two hits, including a double, and two RBIs from Jess Kelley and a single and two RBIs from Tanner Loya.
SOFTBALL
CARMICHAELS 10, WEST GREENE 0 – Bailey Barnyak twirled a one-hitter and had three hits, including a double, and Joselyn Carter drove in five runs by blasting a pair of home runs as the host Lady Mikes blanked the Lady Pioneers in a Section 2-A matchup.
The game was halted due to the mercy rule in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Sydney Miller had two hits and two RBIs and Ke’Lani Chun singled twice and had one RBI for Carmichaels (2-0, 4-2), which also got a single and an RBI from Kenlee Machesky.
Barnyak walked none and struck out 14 in a dominating performance.
Madelyn Roberts’ infield single was the sole hit for West Greene (1-1, 4-3). Losing pitcher Sammi Zimmerman surrendered six runs in two innings. Caitlin Whyte struck out seven while allowing three earned runs on five hits with one walk in 3 2/3 innings of relief.
ELIZABETH FORWARD 10, BELLE VERNON 0 – Berlyn Holibaugh threw a four-hitter and Hannah Evans hit a pair of home runs as the Lady Warriors shut out the Lady Leopards in a six-inning, Section 2-4A game.
Evans had three RBIs as did Addyson Nigut, who was 2 for 3, for EF (5-0, 6-1), which also got two hits from Holibaugh.
Kaylee Sypolt was 2 for 2 for Belle Vernon (2-3, 4-4).
YOUGH 9, SOUTHMORELAND 2 – Brooke Kowalski, Erin Reisinger and Anna Lindner each had two RBIs in the Lady Cougars’ Section 1-3A victory over the Lady Scotties.
Winning pitcher Jaidyn Vay had 10 strikeouts for Yough (1-0, 6-2).
Zoey Murphy smacked a pair of doubles and Megan Potoka also doubled for Southmoreland (0-3, 1-6).
TRINITY 12, CONNELLSVILLE 2 – Gabby Humphreys drove in three runs with a pair of home runs and a double as the Lady Hillers topped the Lady Falcons in a Section 4-5A game.
Maddie Ray also homered and had four RBIs for Trinity (3-1, 8-1).
Kalyn Cole homered, singled and knocked in both runs for Connellsville (1-3, 5-3).
WASHINGTON 5, FRAZIER 3 – Tateionna Warren tripled and singled twice and Faith Partozoti also had three hits in the Lady Prexies Section 4-2A win over the host Lady Commodores.
Z Kyiah Hines added a double and a single and Sophie McCort also doubled for Washington (2-0, 5-1), which also got two hits from Kali Hagan.
Winning pitcher Chessa Henderson allowed two earned runs on 10 hits with one walks and four strikeouts.
Emma Essington had two hits, including a triple, and an RBI for Frazier (1-2, 3-4) which also got two hits apiece from losing pitcher Addison Hiles and Emme Travelena.
