Connor Bergman was 3 for 3 with a double, six RBIs and three runs and also pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings as host Belle Vernon defeated Laurel Highlands, 16-6, in a five-inning Section 2-4A baseball game Tuesday.
Zach Plymire went 3 for 4 with a double, RBI, two stolen bases and four runs for the Leopards who fell behind 4-0 in the top of the first but erupted for 10 runs in the bottom of the inning and pushed across five more in the second.
Nate Kostelnik had three hits, including a double and two RBIs and Chace Petrosky had two hits, two RBIs and three runs for Belle Vernon (4-1, 6-2).
Ramaree Morgan knocked in four runs with a home run and a single for Laurel Highlands (1-4, 1-7), which also got two hits and an RBI from Noah Lion.
SETON LASALLE 10, BROWNSVILLE 0 – Anthony LoCastro toss a six-inning one-hitter and Josh Burkholder drove in three runs as the first-place Rebels (5-0, 5-1) blanked the host Falcons in a Section 4-3A game at Redstone Field.
Jonah Dillinger had the lone hit for Brownsville (2-3, 2-4) which did turn a pair of double plays in the defeat.
MOUNT PLEASANT 9, BURRELL 3 – Dane Firmstone was 3 for 5 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs as the visiting Vikings knocked off the Bucs in a Section 3-3A game.
The score was tied 1-1 until Mount Pleasant put together an eight-run rally in the fourth inning.
Carter Urban had two hits with a double and two RBIs and Winning pitcher Jordan Grieff added three hits and an RBI for the Vikings (3-2, 5-4) who also got two hits and an RBI from both Ian Shipley and Colten Keefer.
Grieff pitched a complete game, allowing two earned runs on 10 hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Adam Scheftic had two hits and an RBI and Tanner Arenth double for Burrell (3-2, 4-3).
WEST GREENE 15, MAPLETOWN 0 – Joel Rizor twirled a four-inning one-hitter with two walks and seven strikeouts as the host Pioneers cruised past the Maples in a Section 1-A game.
Rizor also added a double and two RBIs with the bat as West Greene (1-2, 1-8) earned its first win of the season.
Levi Yeater had two hits and three RBIs and Xavier Lucey and Dylan Hughes both had two hits and two RBIs for the Pioneers, who also got two RBIs from Jackson Grimes.
Kaleb Evosevich had the only hit for Mapletown (0-5, 0-6).
FORT CHERRY 8, FRAZIER 3 – The first-place Rangers broke open a tight battle with four runs in the seventh inning to beat the host Commodores in a Section 1-2A game.
Blake Sweder knocked in two runs, Landdon Trnavsky tripled and Ben Demascal doubled for Fort Cherry (5-0, 7-0), which took advantage of five Frazier errors.
Winning pitcher Dylan Lueck gave up 11 hits with no walks and three strikeouts in going the distance.
Noah Bachinski tripled and singled and Cannon Merrill and Brant Alekson both had two hits and an RBI for the Commodores (2-2, 4-3), who also got a pair of singles from losing pitcher Nick Porter.
Fort Cherry led 2-0 before Frazier pulled even with a run in the third and one in the fourth. The Rangers went back on top with two runs in the fifth but the Commodores whittled the gap back to one with a run in the bottom of the frame.
AVELLA 11, JEFFERSON-MORGAN 8 – Winning pitcher Bryce Wright and a double and two RBIs and the Eagles held off a late Rockets uprising to claim a Section 1-A victory.
Avella (5-0, 7-1) built a 6-0 lead after three innings. J-M scored twice in the fourth before the Eagles pushed the lead up to 9-2 with a run in the bottom of the inning and two more in the fifth.
Both teams scored twice in the sixth, leaving Avella up 11-4, but Jefferson-Morgan plated four runs in the seventh and had the tying run at the plate when the game ended.
Noah Kimberland doubled for the Eagles.
Losing pitcher Drew Adams had a single and three RBIs and Brayden Ellsworth doubled and knocked in two runs for the Rockets (1-4, 1-7), who also got a double from Deakyn DeHoet.
CALIFORNIA 9, BETH-CENTER 1 – Winning pitcher Logan Hartley hurled six strong innings and doubled in the Trojans’ Section 1-2A victory over the host Bulldogs.
California led 2-0 after four innings, then pulled away from three runs in the fifth and two each in the sixth and seventh.
Eli Carpenter had two doubles and three RBIs for the Trojans (3-0, 5-2), who also got two hits and an RBI from both Weston Monticelli and Easton Daniels and two hits from Parker Gillen.
Hartley allowed one unearned run on four hits with two walks and 11 strikeouts.
Ashten Pinkney and Brody Bebout both doubled for B-C (0-5, 0-5).
JEANNETTE 7, CARMICHAELS 4 – The Jayhawks rallied from an early 3-1 deficit with two runs in each the third, four and fifth innings to top the host Mikes in a Section 1-A game.
Noah Rattigan homered and had two RBIs for Jeannette (1-2, 4-3). Winning pitcher Wyatt Schaeffer gave up three runs on four hits in 5 2/3 innings of relief.
Brayden Andrews and Dominic Yazzani both had a single and an RBI for Carmichaels (3-2, 4-4), which also got two hits from Jordan Davis.
RINGGOLD 11, ALBERT GALLATIN 0 – Gavin Angotti waw 4 for 4 with a triple, three doubles and four RBIs in the Rams’ Section 2-4A win over the Colonials.
Kanyon Sutton doubled for AG (0-5, 0-6).
THOMAS JEFFERSON 10, CONNELLSVILLE 3 – Justin Fry tripled, singled and had three RBIs in the Jaguars’ Section 4-5A win over the Falcons.
Eli Graff added a double and two singles for Thomas Jefferson (2-1, 5-3). Winning pitcher Colin Peason struck out 11 in five innings.
Jayden Mickens singled twice and knocked in a run for Connellsville (0-3, 2-5), with also got a hit and two RBIs from Jett Dunaway.
WEST MIFFLIN 6, UNIONTOWN 2 – Justin Dillon pitched a three-hitter and Caden Wills tripled as the host Titans (3-0, 7-2) beat the Red Raiders in a Section 2-4A game.
The game was tied 2-2 after three innings but West Mifflin gradually pulled away with single runs in the fourth and fifth and two more in the sixth.
Chandler Myers doubled and singled for Uniontown (0-5, 1-7), which also got a double from Jameson Carter and an RBI from Brayden Hinzy.
YOUGH 9, SOUTHMORELAND 3 – Mike Bobnar doubled and had two RBIs and John Steban also doubled as the Cougars (2-1, 4-2) beat the Scotties in a Section 3-3A game.
Brenden Geho smacked a double for Southmoreland (0-5, 1-7).
SOFTBALL
WEST GREENE 10, JEFFERSON-MORGAN 8 – Josie Mason drove in six runs with a double and two singles as the Lady Pioneers held off the Lady Rockets after taking an early 7-0 lead in a Section 2-A battle.
Emmaline Beazell was 2 for 3 with three runs and Madelyn Roberts also had two hits for West Greene (2-1, 5-2).
The Lady Pioneers scored three runs in the first and four in the second before J-M plated a run in the top of the third.
West Greene got that run back in the bottom of the inning for an 8-1 advantage but the Lady Rockets rang up five runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to closer within 8-7.
The Lady Pioneers pushed across two more runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Winning pitcher Sammie Zimmerman gave up three earned runs on five hits with one walk and one strikeout in four-plus innings. Caitlin Whyte surrendered three earned runs on five hits in three innings with two walks and three strikeouts to earn the save.
Losing pitcher Emilee Bazzoli was 4 for 5 with two RBIs for Jefferson-Morgan (3-1, 6-2), which also got two hits apiece from Gabriella Marmie and Ava Wood.
LAUREL HIGHLANDS 7, BELLE VERNON 2 — The Mustangs hit three home runs and Payton Senge struck out 12 in a Section 2-4A victory over the Lady Leopards at Washington Township Park.
Laurel Highlands improved to 3-2 in section and overall play while Belle Vernon dropped to 2-4 in the section and 4-5 overall.
The Mustangs’ Harrlie Dirda was 2 for 3 with a home run, two RBIs, two runs scored, a sacrifice flyout and a single. Teammate Emme Cavaliere was a triple shy of the cycle and drove in two runs.
Payton Rambo had a home run and double, and scored and drove in two runs apiece.
Senge allowed one earned run on two hits over seven innings. She walked one.
The Lady Leopards’ Mailey Hayes and Bella Williams each had an RBI, and Williams had a single. Teammate Ava Jones had the other hit for the home team.
MOUNT PLEASANT 10, RINGGOLD 0 – Danica Trainer doubled, singled and drove in two runs and Emma Miller added a double and two RBIs as the host Lady Vikings romped over the Lady Rams in a five-inning non-section game.
Winning pitcher Aubrie Keslar allowed two hits with a walk and six strikeouts in four scoreless innings. Sadie Poole finished up with a 1-2-3 fifth.
Kendra Brunson contributed two hits and an RBI for Mount Pleasant (5-1).
Addy Allen and Megan Powell had the only hits for Ringgold (0-5).
CONNELLSVILLE 10, PETERS TOWNSHIP 3 – Kalyn Cole had two hits and three RBIs in the Lady Falcons’ Section 4-5A win over the Lady Indians.
Kaylee Roadman added two hits and two RBIs and Halle Parfitt had a double and two RBIs for Connellsville (2-3, 6-3).
Allison Sworden had three hits and drove in two runs for Peters Township (2-4, 3-6).
TRACK & FIELD
GIRLS: CALIFORNIA 81, CHARLEROI 23 — The Lady Trojans earned a victory over the Lady Cougars in Section 6-2A play at Myron Pottios Stadium on the campus of Charleroi Area High School.
California, who improved to 6-0, have clinched a spot in the team playoffs, and can complete an undefeated regular season and a section championship if it defeats West Greene on Tuesday.
The Lady Trojans swept the jumping events, as Addison Frank won the triple jump with a leap of 34-0. Morgan Ross soared 15-3 in the long jump and Lila Mitchell cleared 4-10 in the high jump.
California’s Haley Gibson won the shot put with a throw of 30-10. Teammate Peyton Sunderman won the discus (69-7).
Frank and Ross teamed up with Aubrey Cellurale and Meadow Meier to win the 400-meter relay in 54.26. Cellurale crossed the finish line first in the 100 and 200 with times of 14.24 and 29.72.
BOYS: CALIFORNIA 83, CHARLEROI 49 — The Trojans moved one step closer to clinching a berth in the postseason after a Section 6-2A triumph over the Cougars.
California (5-1) can clinch a spot in the team playoffs with a victory over West Greene on Tuesday.
The Trojans’ Carter Frank won two events, as he was victorious in the shot put (37-0) and discus (119-4). Teammate Brayden Crockett won the javelin with a throw of 128-10.
California’s Carter Kent won the 800-meter run in 2:03.90. Teammate Charles Meiss helped the Trojans sweep the distance races with victories in the 1,600 and 3,200 in 5:25.11 and 11:59.88.
Meiss was joined by Quinn Barbero, Evan Balazick and Layne Typovsky in winning the 3,200 relay in 10:28.74.
Brayden Brown, Bode Boda, Adin Keyes and Brandon Meier won the 400 relay in 48.69.
BOYS TENNIS
WINCHESTER THURSTON 4, MOUNT PLEASANT 1 – Austyn Gross earned the Vikings’ lone win in a Section 1-2A defeat to Winchester Thurston.
Gross defeated Ravi Stanger at No. 1 singles by scores of 6-3 and 6-4.
