Lady Warriors edge Fillies in pitchers duel, 1-0

Berlyn Holibaugh outdueled Payton Senge as first-place Elizabeth Forward edged visiting Laurel Highlands in a softball pitchers’ duel, 1-0, to remain perfect in Section 2-4A on Tuesday.

The Lady Warriors (10-0, 11-1) scored the lone run of the game in the bottom of the fifth when Samantha Malek hit a one-out single and came home on Julia Resnik’s two-out double to right field.

Both pitchers allowed five hits.

Holibaugh walked two and struck out nine and added a pair of singles.

Senge walked two and struck out 10 in suffering the hard-luck loss.

Kayla Howell had two hits for Laurel Highlands (4-4, 4-4), which remains in third place in the section.

MAPLETOWN 9, AVELLA 8 – Lainey Taylor had two hits, including a home run, and the Lady Maples held on to defeat the visiting Lady Eagles in a weather-shortened Section 2-A game.

Makenna Lotspeich added two hits and two RBIs for Mapletown (1-6, 2-7).

Sara Decker doubled and singled and knocked in two runs for Avella (0-4, 0-7).

BALDWIN 7, CONNELLSVILLE 2 – Reese Temme had two hits and two RBIs and Ava Bonacci singled three times as the first-place Highlanders knocked off the host Lady Falcons in a Section 4-5A game on Monday.

Winning pitcher Melina Defelice tossed a five-hitter, allowing one earned run on five hits with one walk and nine strikeouts and added a double and an RBI with the bat. Camryn Temme chipped in with a double for Baldwin (8-0, 10-1).

Halle Parfitt doubled and knocked in a run for Connellsville (3-4, 7-4), which also got an RBI from Addison Lloyd. Losing pitcher Aliyah Wagner surrendered seven unearned runs and the Lady Falcons committed six errors. She gave up 11 hits with no walks and two strikeouts.

BELLE VERNON 21, RINGGOLD 4 – Mailey Hayes was 3 for 4 with a double and five RBIs and Ava Jones was 4 for 5 with a triple and three RBIs in the Lady Leopards’ Section 2-4A win over the host Lady Rams (0-7, 0-8).

Aaddy Newman was 4 for 5, Kaylee Sypolt tripled, singled twice and had two RBIs and Emily Bird added three hits and an RBI for Belle Vernon (4-5, 6-6), which also got two hits apiece from Brooke Hugland and Lily Crawford.

Winning pitcher Leighton Schwab allowed two earned runs in 4 1/3 innings and Crawford pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief.

BENTWORTH 4, FRAZIER 3 – Zoie McDonald’s walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted the host Lady Bearcats over the Lady Commodores, keeping Bentworth alone in first place in Section 4-2A.

Winning pitcher Sydney Gonglik had 14 strikeouts for the unbeaten Lady Bearcats (4-0, 9-0), who also got two RBIs from Makayla Gonglik.

Frazier (2-4, 4-6) trailed 3-0 before rallying to tie it with three runs in the sixth inning. Emma Essington had a double and two RBIs for the Lady Commodores.

PETERS TOWNSHIP 5, ALBERT GALLATIN 1 – Winning pitcher Lili Giulianelle pitched a six-hitter and was 4 for 4 with two RBIs and the Lady Indians (4-5, 5-7) triumphed over the Lady Colonials in a Section 4-5A game.

Mackenzie Chapman had two hits for Albert Gallatin (0-9, 0-8). Losing pitcher Jenna Myers allowed 11 hits and three walks with seven strikeouts.

SOUTHMORELAND 12, LIGONIER VALLEY 10 – The Lady Scotties rallied from a 10-3 deficit with nine runs in the top of the seventh inning to stun the host Lady Rams in a Section 1-3A clash.

Winning pitcher Zoey Murphy doubled and hit a solo home run and Makayla Brown also homered and knocked in three runs for Southmoreland (2-5, 3-8), which also got a double and two RBIs from Abigail Grabiak.

Marlee Miller and Maggie Peters both had two RBIs for Ligonier Valley (1-4, 3-6).

WASHINGTON 18, CALIFORNIA 2 – Tateionna Warren had two hits and four RBIs in the Lady Prexies’ Section 4-2A victory over the Lady Trojans.

Sophie McCort added three doubles and three RBIs for Washington (4-1, 7-2), which also got a double and an RBI from winning pitcher Chessa Henderson.

Gabbi Luncinski had a double and an RBI for California (0-6, 0-9).

BASEBALL

JEFFERSON-MORGAN 6, WEST GREENE 1 – Brayden Ellsworth fired a no-hitter and added two hits and two RBIs with the bat to lead the host Rockets past the Pioneers in a Section 1-A game Tuesday.

Gavin Roberts scored an unearned run in the first inning for West Greene (2-4, 2-8).

Ellsworth walked three and struck out seven.

Jefferson-Morgan tied with a run in the second inning, then pushed across two more in the third and added three insurance runs in the sixth.

Drew Adams had a single and two RBIs and Tyler McVay added a single and an RBI for the Rockets (4-4, 5-6), who also got an RBI from Dayten Marion.

ELIZABETH FORWARD 8, BELLE VERNON 7 – Daniel Spence’s walk-off, run-scoring single in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the host Warriors a Section 2-4A win over the Leopards.

Jack Crovak had two hits, including a home run, and drove in four runs for EF (5-1, 7-5).

Jack Edwards doubled, singled and knocked in two runs for Belle Vernon (6-2, 8-3), which also got a hit and three RBIs from Connor Bergman.

UNIONTOWN 12, MONESSEN 4 – Ethan White drove in three runs and Lane Smiley and Luke Gresh each had a single and two RBIs in the Red Raiders’ six-inning, non-section win over the host Greyhounds.

Elim Martin had a double and an RBI, Shane Kelly also doubled and Caleb Bartock singled and knocked in a run for Uniontown (4-4).

Winning pitcher Chandler Myers gave up one run on three hits with there walks ans four strikeouts in four innings, and also drove in a run.

Nathan Speicher had two hits and an RBI for Monessen (0-10).

SERRA CATHOLIC 8, SOUTHMORELAND 2 – Gray Moyer had two hits for the Scotties (1-10) in a non-section loss to the Eagles (6-4).
