Connellsville blanks AG to keep hold on fourth place

Halle Parfitt fired a three-hit shutout and helped her own cause with two doubles, a single and three RBIs as Connellsville blanked host Albert Gallatin 9-0 Wednesday to maintain its grip on fourth place in the Section 4-5A softball standings.

The Lady Falcons improved to 8-4 overall and evened their section record at 4-4 to stay ahead of fifth-place Peters Township (4-6, 5-8). The top four teams in each section qualify for the postseason.

Parfitt walked two and struck out six.

Molly Greenawalt smacked a triple and a double and knocked in a run and Kalyn Cole had a double and two RBIs for Connellsville, which also got a double from Cali Leichliter and a single and an RBI from both Addison Lloyd and Rylee Dreves.

The Lady Colonials (0-9, 0-10) were limited to three singles with one each by losing pitcher Jenna Myers, Laney Gibson and Bailey Hollowood.

FRAZIER 5, BROWNSVILLE 1 – Addison Hiles pitched a four-hitter with two walks and 10 strikeouts to help the host Lady Commodores earn a key Section 4-2A victory.

The win combined with Waynesburg Central’s loss to Washington bumped Frazier (3-4, 5-6) over the Lady Raiders (2-4, 5-6) into fourth place.

Emma Essington had a single and two RBIs and Delani Anderson contributed a single and an RBI for the Lady Commodores, who also got a sacrifice fly from Grace Polkabla.

Losing pitcher Ava Clark gave up just two earned runs on three hits but walked eight while striking out eight.

Lena Rechichar had two hits for Brownsville (4-3, 6-4), which remained in third place.

BELLE VERNON 13, OAKLAND CATHOLIC 4 – Addy Newman was 5 for 5 with three RBIs in the Lady Leopards’ Section 2-4A win over visiting Oakland Catholic (1-6, 1-6).

Kaylee Sypolt contributed four hits, including a double, and two RBIs and Ava Jones blasted a two-run homer for Belle Vernon (5-5, 7-6), which also got a double and two RBIs from Mailey Hayes, two hits from Maddie Grisnik, a single and two RBIs from Brooke Hugland and a single, two sacrifice bunts and an RBI from winning pitcher Lily Crawford.

Crawford allowed two earned runs on three hits with six walks and 10 strikeouts.

BENTWORTH 14, CALIFORNIA 0 – Alexa Babirad was 4 for 4 with a trio of triples and four RBIs as the undefeated Lady Bearcats (5-0, 10-0) romped over the Lady Trojans in a five-inning Section 4-2A game.

Winning pitcher Makayla Gonglik pitched a two-hitter with one walk and five strikeouts and added two doubles, a single and two RBIs with the bat.

The lone hits for California (0-7, 0-10) were singles by Avery Filby and Gabriella Luncinski.

CARMICHAELS 12, AVELLA 0 – Bailey Barnyak twirled a one-hit shutout and was 3 for 3 with three RBIs as the Lady Mikes shut out the visiting Lady Eagles in a five-inning Section 2-A game.

Ke’Lani Chun tripled, singled and knocked in four runs for Carmichaels (5-1, 7-3), which also got a double, single and two RBIs from Kenlee Machesky and an RBI from Carys McConnell.

Barnyak walked none and recorded 14 of 15 outs on strikeouts.

Sophie Kozak had the lone hit for Avella (0-5, 0-8).

JEFFERSON-MORGAN 10, BETH-CENTER 0 – Ashlynn Snyder smacked two doubles and a single and knocked in three runs and Robi Finley blasted a home run as the Lady Rockets blanked the Lady Bulldogs (2-5, 3-7) in a Section 2-A game.

Addalei Larkin added a double, singled and an RBI for Jefferson-Morgan (6-1, 9-2), which remained tied with West Greene for first place.

WEST GREENE 11, MAPLETOWN 1 – Caitlin Whyte threw a one-hitter in the Lady Pioneers’ five-inning, Section 2-A win over the Lady Maples (1-7, 2-8) to stay deadlocked with Jefferson-Morgan atop the standings.

Emmaline Beazell had two hits and two RBIs, Sammi Zimmerman and Katie Brudnock each had two hits and an RBI and Kendra Tharp and Rylee Yeager both had a single and two RBIs for West Greene (6-1, 9-3), which also got a single and an RBI from Josie Mason.

Whyte walked three and struck out seven.

Mapletown’s only run came in the fifth inning when Lainey Taylor singled in Emma Zalar.

MOUNT PLEASANT 10, DEER LAKES 0 – Jenna Whipkey was 4 for 4 with an RBI and Kendra Brunson had two hits, including a solo home run, as the first-place Lady Vikings triumphed over the visiting Lady Lancers in a six-inning, Section 1-3A game.

Mount Pleasant scored single runs in the first, second, fourth and fifth innings, then ended the game on the mercy rule with a six-run rally in the sixth.

Chloe Borelli tripled, singled and drove in three runs, Emma Miller doubled, singled and knocked in two runs and winning pitcher Danica Trainer had two hits and an RBI for Mount Pleasant (7-0, 9-1).

Gracie Etling and Talia Reho each added a single and an RBI.

Trainer allowed three hits and no walks with four strikeouts in tossing a shutout.

WASHINGTON 4, WAYNESBURG CENTRAL 3 – Kieran Wormsley homered, doubled and knocked in three runs and winning pitcher Chessa Henderson worked out of a two-on, one-out jam in the bottom of the seventh as the Lady Prexies held off the Lady Raiders for a Section 4-2A victory.

Washington (5-1, 8-2) built a 4-0 lead with three runs in the third and one in the sixth.

Waynesburg fought back with two in the sixth and pulled within one in the bottom of the seventh on a single by Eva Pester, an error and a one-out RBI single by

Devin Moore that put the potential tying run at second and winning run at first. Henderson struck out the next two batters to end it.

Henderson allowed two earned runs on six hits with one walk and eight strikeouts.

Losing pitcher Gina Tedrow surrendered five hits and one walk while striking out 14, and had a double and two RBIs for Waynesburg (2-4, 5-6).

YOUGH 5, SOUTHMORELAND 2 – Brooke Kowalski knocked in three runs with a home run and two singles as the Lady Cougars (5-2, 10-5) beat the Lady Scotties in a Section 1-3A game.

Southmoreland (2-6, 3-9) scored its two runs on a solo home run by Zoey Murphy and an RBI triple by Isabella Grabiak.
