Lady Falcons earn return trip to playoffs

Brownsville will make its second consecutive trip into the WPIAL softball playoffs thanks to another stellar effort from pitcher Ava Clark on Wednesday.

The senior righthander fired a four-hitter with 14 strikeouts and no walks and also doubled in the Lady Falcons’ 3-2 victory over visiting Washington to secure at least a share of second place in Section 4-2A.

Brownsville (6-3, 8-4) scored single runs in the first, second and fourth innings to take a 3-0 lead. Washington (5-4, 9-5) scored twice in the fifth to get within one but Clark held the Lady Prexies off the rest of the way.

Lena Rechichar had two hits and an RBI for coach Jane Bock’s Lady Falcons, who also got doubles from Lyla Gill and Tavan Ternitsky.

Losing pitcher Chessa Henderson allowed seven hits and struck out three.

ALBERT GALLATIN 14, MAPLETOWN 7 – The Lady Colonials beat the visiting Lady Maples for their first win of the season behind winning pitcher Jenna Myers, who went 3 for 4 with an RBI and struck out 11 while allowing no earned runs on four hits with no walks.

Ellie Seese had two hits and drove in three runs and Makenzie Chapman smacked a double and a single with an RBI for Albert Gallatin (1-12, 1-13), which also got two hits and two RBIs from Bella Lukehart, a single and three RBIs from Mikayla Shea and a hit and two RBIs from Laney Gibson.

CARMICHAELS 14, BETH-CENTER 0 – Bailey Barnyak pitched a six-inning, one-hitter with 14 strikeouts and added a single and two RBIs as the Lady Mikes blanked the Lady Bulldogs in a Section 2-A game.

Kenlee Machesky had two hits, including a triple, and two RBIs, Bentley Lukacs had two hits and an RBI and Carys McConnell and Kaitlyn Kramer each had a hit and two RBIs for Carmichaels (7-1, 10-3), which also got a triple and two RBIs from Giana Colarusso and a single and an RBI from Ke’Lani Chun.

Bella Stepp had the lone hit for B-C (4-8, 5-10).

CONNELLSVILLE 6, PETERS TOWNSHIP 3 – Cali Leichliter had two hits and two RBIs and Kalyn Cole added a triple and two RBIs as the Lady Falcons (5-6, 9-6) beat the Lady Indians (4-8, 5-10) in a Section 4-5A game.

JEFFERSON-MORGAN 12, CALIFORNIA 0 – Winning pitcher Gabbie Marmie twirled a five-inning, one-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and added a home run and three RBIs as the Lady Rockets (11-3) beat the Lady Trojans (0-10) in a non-section game.

Addyson Teagarden knocked in four runs with three hits for J-M.

Avery Filby had the only hit for California.

LIGONIER VALLEY 17, BELLE VERNON 7 – Kaylee Sypost homered and knocked in three runs and Emily Bird had three hits, including a doubled, and three RBIs but it wasn’t enough as the Lady Leopards (7-9) lost a non-section game to the Lady Rams (4-8).

MOUNT PLEASANT 6, FRAZIER 5 – Winning pitcher Danica Trainer and Carly Surma hit home runs as the Lady Vikings edged the Lady Commodores in a non-section battle of playoff teams.

Kendra Brunson added a double and a single for Mount Pleasant (12-1), which also got three hits from Sadie Poole.

Grace Poklabla had two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs for Frazier (7-7).

BASEBALL

BELLE VERNON 12, CHARLEROI 2 – Connor Bergman smashed a pair of home runs and Zach Plymire also homered and knocked in four runs as the Leopards (9-3) triumphed over the Cougars (5-7) in a non-section game.

WAYNESBURG CENTRAL 1, MCGUFFEY 0 – Jarrett Tretinik twirled a four-hit shutout and Lucas Slifko’s brought in the game’s only run with a fifth-inning sacrifice fly to lift the Raiders (4-4, 4-9) over the Highlanders (3-5, 5-9)

in a Section 4-3A game.
