Mustangs beat Lady Titans again, clinch second place

Laurel Highlands defeated West Mifflin for the second time in five days to wrap up sole possession of second place in the Section 2-4A softball standings with a 5-2 victory on Friday.

The Mustangs got another strong performance from Payton Senge, who gave up just one earned run on eight hits with one walk and 11 strikeouts and also slugged a two-run homer.

Senge’s blast was part of a three-run first inning that put Laurel Highlands (8-4, 8-4) ahead to stay.

The Mustangs added a run in the second and one more in the fourth. West Mifflin scored once in the third and once in the sixth.

Kayla Howell was 3 for 4 with a double and a triple for LH, which also got a single and an RBI from Chloe Komacko.

Aubry Jaskulski had two hits and an RBI for the third-place Lady Titans (7-5, 11-5).

BENTWORTH 4, BROWNSVILLE 2 – Winning pitcher Makayla Gonglik hit a tiebreaking two-run triple in the top of the seventh inning as the unbeaten, first-place Lady Bearcats fended off host Brownsville to complete a sweep through Section 4-2A play.

Gonglik, who also doubled, pitched a four-hitter with eight strikeouts.

Losing pitcher Ava Clark limited Bentworth (8-0, 14-0), which averages nine runs per game, to six hits and two walks while striking out 13.

Zaydee Downer doubled and Blair Long hit an run-scoring single for the Lady Falcons (6-4, 8-5), who finished section play in a second-place tie with Frazier.

CARMICHAELS 3, JEFFERSON-MORGAN 1 – Carys McConnell and Kenlee Machesky smacked run-scoring singles in the sixth inning as the Lady Mikes defeated the visiting Lady Rockets to clinch at least a share of the Section 2-A championship.

Bailey Barnyak tossed a five-hitter while allowing one unearned run on five hits with one walk and nine strikeouts.

McConnell was 2 for 3, including a triple.

Jefferson-Morgan (7-2, 11-4) took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on Ava Wood’s sacrifice fly. Carmichaels (8-1, 11-3) tied it in the fourth when Machesky followed McConnell’s triple with a sacrifice fly.

Barnyak singled leading off the sixth and courtesy runner Ainsley Simons took second on a wild pitch and scored when on a single by McConnell who took second on the throw. Machesky then brought in McConnell with a single to center.

Wood had two hits for J-M. Losing pitcher Emilee Bazzoli surrendered just five hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

FRAZIER 17, CALIFORNIA 0 – Emme Travalena knocked in five runs with a double and two singles and Addison Hiles pitched a one-hit shutout and had four hits and two RBIs as the Lady Commodores clinched a share of second place in Section 4-2A with a four-inning win at California.

Morgan Fisher smashed a two-run homer and a run-scoring single annd Jayanna Ciferno had two hits and two RBIs for Frazier (6-4, 8-7), which also got two hits and an RBI from Zoey Zurenski and a hit and an RBI from Allie Kibe.

Olivia Lenkey had the lone hit for the Lady Trojans (0-10, 0-14).
