Waynesburg earns key win on Corwin’s walk-off hit

Waynesburg Central kept its baseball playoff hopes alive with a key 5-4, walk-off win over visiting Keystone Oaks to earn a split in their Section 4-3A series on Tuesday.

C.J. Corwin singled in Jaxon Parker to cap a two-run rally in the bottom of the seventh and pull the Raiders (5-5, 6-10) into a third-place tie with the Golden Eagles (5-5, 7-8), one game in back of second-place Charleroi (6-4, 9-7).

Waynesburg wraps up its regular season with a two-game set against the Cougars starting Monday.

Washington (4-6, 7-9) and McGuffey (4-6, 6-9) sit one game in back of the Raiders in a tie for fifth place. Waynesburg, which handed first-place Seton LaSalle its lone section loss, split its two games with Keystone Oaks, the Prexies and the Highlanders.

The Raiders trailed 4-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh but R.J. Whyel reached second on two errors, took third on R.J. Whyel’s ground out and scored on Jarett Tretinek’s third single of the game to tie it.

Austin Surber singled Tretinek to second where he was replaced by pinch runner Parker who came home on Corwin’s single to right field.

Corwin also hit a run-scoring double earlier in the game. DJ Reese and winning pitcher Surber combined to throw 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

CONNELLSVILLE 6, GATEWAY 4 – Jackson Lee had two doubles and two RBIs as the Falcons completed a two-game sweep of the Gators (2-8, 4-14) in Section 4-5A play.

Connellsville had clinched a playoff spot with a victory over Gateway on Monday.

Xander Newmeyer and three hits and an RBI for Connellsville (4-6, 8-10), which also got two hits from Linkon Keller.

Winning pitcher Jeff Dunaway gave up three earned runs on three hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in seven innings. Chris Johnson tossed a scoreless seventh to earn the save.

FORT CHERRY 12, CALIFORNIA 7 – Colton Temple crushed a pair of home runs and also doubled in driving in five runs as the undefeated Rangers completed a two-game of the Trojans.

Fort Cherry (10-0, 15-0) also got a home run from Ben Demascal.

Chase Shemansky had a triple and three RBIs for California (8-2, 10-6), which remains alone in second place.

AVELLA 11, CARMICHELS 1 – Chas Rush had two hits and an RBI and Brayden Fuller knocked in three runs as the second-place Eagles (8-4, 11-6) beat the Mikes in a Section 1-A game.

Brayden Andrews drove in the lone run for Carmichaels (5-5, 6-8), which dropped into a fourth-place tie with Jeannette.

BELLE VERNON 11, ALBERT GALLATIN 1 – Nate Kostelnik had three hits, including a double, and drove in four runs as the Leopards (8-2, 12-3) defeated the Colonials in a six-inning Section 2-4A game.

Zach Plymire pitched a four-hitter and also had two hits, including a triple, and an RBI for Belle Vernon.

Nico Edwards singled in the only run for Albert Gallatin (0-12, 1-15), which also got doubles from Kaiden Brady and Billy Craig.

BENTWORTH 13, BETH-CENTER 7 – Brody Bebout singled and drove in three runs for the Bulldogs in a Section 1-2A loss to the Bearcats (4-8, 5-10).

Austin Kurowski had two doubles and two RBIs for Beth-Center (4-8, 5-10), which also got two hits from Jax Taylor.

BURGETTSTOWN 10, FRAZIER 3 – Chase Fulmer had three hits, including a double, but the Commodores (2-7, 6-9) fell to the Blue Devils (5-5, 7-9) in a Section 1-2A game.

CHARLEROI 10, BROWNSVILLE 0 – Aidan Napolillo and Jeremiah McDonald had the only hits as the Falcons (3-9, 3-11) lost to the Cougars (6-4, 8-7) in a Section 4-3A game.

GREENSBURG CENTRAL CATHOLIC 14, WEST GREENE 4 – Darren Knight had two hits and an RBI as the Pioneers (2-8, 2-14) fell to the first-place Centurions (10-0, 11-0) in a Section 1-A game.

JEANNETTE 16, MAPLETOWN 1 – Carson Vanata doubled in the only run for the Maples (0-10, 2-15) in a Section 1-A loss to the Jayhawks (5-5, 9-6).

LIGONIER VALLEY 6, SOUTHMORELAND 0 – Jake Govern and Peyton Bann had the only hits as the Scotties (0-10, 1-15) dropped a Section 3-3A game to the Rams (5-5, 8-8).

RINGGOLD 5, MOUNT PLEASANT 0 – Ian Shipley had two hits for the Vikings (10-7) in a non-section loss to the Rams (8-9).
