Franklin Regional keeps Uniontown out of postseason

By the Herald-Standard 1 min read

Franklin Regional built a 34-23 halftime lead and held on from there to defeat visiting Uniontown, 55-48, and secure sole possession of second place in Section 1-5A in boys basketball action on Friday night.

The loss knocked the Red Raiders out of playoff position. A victory would’ve kept Uniontown in a four-way tie for fourth place with McKeesport, Latrobe and Laurel Highlands and it would’ve claimed a share of the fifth and final spot out of the section.

The Panthers (9-5, 13-8), who lost at Uniontown, 64-56 on Jan. 13, jumped out to an 18-13 first-quarter lead in the rematch before surging to an 11-point advantage by intermission.

The Red Raiders (6-8, 10-12) fought back to within 43-37 after three quarters but Franklin Regional held on with a 12-11 edge in the fourth.

Alec Masten scored a game-high 19 points for Franklin Regional and Logan Walter was right behind with 18, including a trio of 3-pointers.

Cam Dugan had two treys in scoring a team-high 12 points for the Red Raiders, who put four players in double digits.

Isaac Ellsworth sank a trio of 3-pointers in tallying 11 points and Nolan Baker also tossed in 11. Payden Fitzgerald added 10 points.
