Belle Vernon Legion rocks Brownsville, 22-1
Brendon Geho knocked in four runs with a pair of doubles and Belle Vernon got home runs from Vito Francia and Cole Matusik on its way to a five-inning, 22-1 victory at Brownsville in Fayette American Legion baseball action on Wednesday.
First-place Belle Vernon improved to 13-1-1 overall while Brownsville fell to 2-12.
Francia had three hits and two RBIs, JB Crovak tripled, singled and knocked in two runs and Matusik also had two hits and two RBIs for Belle Vernon, which also got a double and three RBIs from Max Manley.
Belle Vernon scored one run in the first innings, three in the second and five in the third before erupting for 14 in the fourth inning, which included a two-run blast by Francia.
Winning pither Vincenzo Francia pitched two scorless, hitless innings with four strikeouts. Anthony Corella also tossed a pair of scoreless frames, allowing one hit while striking out six. Jack Crovak gave up an unearned run in one inning of work and hit a double. Dom Pireaux also doubled for BV.
Johnathan Vasbinder and Elijah Patterson had the only hits for Brownsville.
SMITHFIELD-FAIRCHANCE 2, CHARLEROI 1 — Smithfield-Fairchance scored two runs in the first inning Kaiden Brady made that lead stand up with a sparkling complete-game performance in a win over visiting Charleroi.
Brady allowed seven hits and one walk while striking out nine as manager Tony Watson’s team improved to 9-5.
Evan Weakland started S-F’s first inning with a single to right and AJ Watson drew a walk. Weakland stole third base, Watson took second on a passed ball and both runners scored on an error.
Charleroi (5-8) scored its lone run in the third inning on Brock Henderson’s two-out RBI single.
Losing pitcher Anthony Koziel had two hits for Charleroi. He also went the distance in a strong effort on the mound, allowing the two unearned runs with two walks and 13 strikeouts.
