Copperheads rally for walk-off win over Oaks
Noah Mildren smacked a two-run double and Ben Shields followed with a walk-off single as Carmichaels rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to stun visiting Oakland, 5-4, in a Fayette County Baseball League battle on Monday.
The Oaks led 4-1 through five innings but manager Dickie Krause’s first-place Copperheads (11-2-1) scored once in the sixth and three times after two were out in the seventh.
Anthony Romano, Carmichaels’ third pitcher of the game, earned the win with 1 1/3 scoreless innings.
The Copperheads cut the lead to 4-2 in the sixth.
Dom Colarusso reached on an error to start the inning. Mildren hit into a force out, advanced to third on a double by Shields and scored on Luke Camden’s single.
Losing pitcher Malakai Webb struck out the first two batters in the seventh but then walked Romano and the fleet Colarusso reached on another error.
Mildren’s double to center brought in both runners to tie the game. Fields followed with a single to right to score Mildren with the winning run.
Shields, who had two RBIs, and Dom Obiecunas each had two hits for Carmichaels.
Copperheads starting pitcher Liam Lohr gave up four runs on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts before getting knocked out with one out in the third. Drake long relieved and tossed 3 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing five hits and three walks with three strikeouts.
Vincent Aloi and Michael Thor both had two hits and an RBI for Oakland (7-9), which also got two hits from Jacob Nethling.
Starting pitcher Ty Wickline and Aloi each gave up one run in three innings before Webb took over in the seventh.
Both teams scored a run in the first inning. Thor hit an RBI single in the top of the inning and Colarusso walked and eventually scored on Shields’ sacrifice fly in the bottom of the frame.
The Oaks struck for three runs in the third on an RBI single by Aloi, a sacrifice fly by Dylan Duvall and an RBI single by Rhett Sensabaugh.
