Copperheads explode late, sweep Mill Run

Carmichaels’ 4-1 lead seemed fairly safe as it headed into the seventh inning of its Fayette County Baseball League playoff game on Thursday at Mill Run.

The Copperheads made completely sure they wound complete a sweep of their best-of-three first-round playoff series in their final at-bat.

Carmichaels exploded for 10 runs on eight hits while sending 16 men to the plate to finally put away the Millers, 16-1.

The big frame included a triple and a double by Brock Bonadio, two singles by Alex Vansickle, a triple by Ben Shields, a double by Robbie Wilson-Jones, and singles by Dom Colarusso and AJ Vanata.

Colarusso was 3 for 3 with two RBIs for the Copperheads, who also got two hits and two RBIs each from Bonadio, Vansickle Wilson-Jones.

Carmichaels will host Game 1 of the best-of-five league finals against Hopwood Village Plaza on Sunday at 5 p.m.

Winning pitcher Gianni Cantini allowed one unearned run on four hits with no walks and seven strikeouts in six innings.

The Copperheads pounded out 16 hits with eight going for extra bases.

Losing pitcher Anthony DeMarco surrendered eight earned runs on 11 hits in 6.1 innings before being relieved by Lane Smiley, who had one of Mill Run’s four hits with the other three coming off the bats of Josh Burns, Alan Vansickle and Travis Bevard.
