Petrush’s clutch hit gives Hopwood split with Oaks
Hopwood Village Plaza was one out away from being swept in a Fayette County Baseball League doubleheader against Oakland on Sunday.
Then Chad Petrush stepped to the plate.
Petrush lined a three-run double to center field to give Hopwood a dramatic 4-3 walk-off victory and a split of their twinbill.
The Oaks won the first game, 7-6.
The winning rally in the second game started with two outs and nobody on base in the bottom of the seventh inning. Hopwood then got consecutive singles from Andino Vacchiolla, Justin Brestensky and Anthony Piasecki to load the bases and set the stage for Petrush, who connected with the first pitch from losing pitcher Ty Wickline for his third hit of the game.
That made a winner of Brestensky who pitched three scoreless innings in relief of starter Mason Miller, allowing no hits and two walks with five strikeouts.
Wickline had limited Hopwood to one run on six hits through the first six innings. He wound up surrendering 10 hits and no walks with two strikeouts in going the distance.
Chris Green’s run-scoring single gave the Oaks a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
Hopwood tied it in the bottom of the inning when Tate Musko hit a two-out single, raced to third on Santino Marra’s infield hit and scored when an error was committed on the play.
Oakland took a 3-1 advantage in the fourth when Michael Thor hit a run-scoring single and was part of a double steal with Cameron Lynch swiping home.
Vecchiolla had two hits, including a double, for Hopwood. Miller pitched the first four innings, allowing one earned run on four hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
Wenkai Campbell had two of Oakland’s four hits.
It was the Oaks who rallied in the seventh inning to win the opener after trailing 6-4.
Mason Everhart made it 6-5 with a run-scoring single and Lynch drew a bases-loaded walk to tie it. Jake France followed with a sacrifice fly to bring in the go-ahead run.
Marra hit a one-out double to put the tying run on second base with one out in the bottom of the seventh but winning pitcher Lynch, who tossed a complete game, got a strikeout before walking Matthew Firestone and then got a game-ending ground out.
Gene Thorpe took the loss in relief. Jared Hough had two hits for Hopwood.
CHARLEROI 12, MILL RUN 2 — The Magicians blew up a close 4-2 game with eight runs in the fifth inning, invoking the mercy rule in defeating the visiting Millers.
Colton Brightwell was 4 for 4 with three runs scored and Spencer Behrendt was 2 for 2 with four RBIs for Charleroi, which also got two hits and two RBIs from Kolten Smittle, a double and single from Jimmy Lanzi and a double from winning pitcher Ashton Ray.
Smittle hit a two-run single and Ray stroked a two-run double in the big fifth inning, and Elias Lippincott ended the game with a walk-off RBI single.
Ray gave up four hits and four walks with five strikeouts in tossing all five frames.
Teran Kemp had two hits and Josh Burns doubled for Mill Run.
Losing pitcher Bill Bendis surrendered four runs, only two of which were earned, on eight hits with no walks and five strikeouts in four innings.
