MP’s Drzal, Trainer repeat at section doubles champions

Mount Pleasant’s Ryleigh Drzal ad Danica Trainer fought their way to a second consecutive Section 1-2A doubles championship with a three-set victory over host Valley on Thursday.
The Lady Vikings duo took the first set, 6-4, but Valley’s Karrigan Thomey and Sophie Harclerode came back to even the match with a 7-6 win in the second set, taking the tiebreaker, 7-4. Drzal and Trainer regrouped and repeated as section champs by taking the third set, 6-2, to qualify for the WPIAL finals.
It’s the third time the Mount Pleasant doubles team has
advanced to the WPIAL championships. They were WPIAL runners-up a year ago.
Drzal and Trainer, the top seed, received a first-round bye, the rolled past Derry’s Claire VanDerWeele and Danielle Marsh in the quarterfinals, 10-1, and cruise by Valley’s Lena Fabian and Emma Shirley in the semifinals, 6-0, 6-0.
BOYS SOCCER
SOUTHMORELAND 9, BROWNSVILLE 0 – Gio Lizza knocked in three goals as the Scotties blanked the Falcons in a Section 5-2A match.
Liam Smith and Hunter Ryan each added two goals for Southmoreland (4-3-1, 4-5-1), which also got goals from Ben Schaefer and Caleb Hart. Goalkeeper Nathan Nguyen recorded the clean sheet.
Goalkeeper Camden Kline made 10 saves for Brownsville (0-7, 1-9).
BELLE VERNON 1, YOUGH 0 – Carter Stairs scored in the first half and the goal stood up as the game winner in the Leopards’ Section 5-2A win over the Cougars (4-2-2, 5-4-2).
Morgan Bunch made six saves to record the shutout for Belle Vernon (7-0-1, 9-0-2).
MOUNT PLEASANT 6, DERRY 0 – Tyke Snyder found the net twice in the Vikings’ Section 5-2A shutout of the Trojans (2-6, 4-7).
Mount Pleasant (7-1, 10-1) got a goal and an assist each from Gavin Rummel and Gavin Jackovitz and goals from Lukas Showman and Karter Spaw.
CHARTIERS-HOUSTON 4, BETH-CENTER 1 – The Buccaneers (5-2-2, 9-2-2) knocked off the Bulldogs (2-6-1, 2-9-1) in a Section 2-A match.
TRINITY 2, LAUREL HIGHLANDS 0 – The Hillers (5-0-1, 6-0-4) blanked the Mustangs (1-5-1, 2-7-1) in a Section 2-3A match.
GIRLS SOCCER
WAYNESBURG CENTRAL 2, MCGUFFEY 2 – The Lady Raiders and Lady Highlanders (3-4-1, 4-6-1) played to a draw in their Section 1-2A match.
Kolbi Rastoka recorded a goal and an assist for Waynesburg (3-2-3, 6-3-3), which also got a goal from Serenity Taylor and an assist from Tess Pauley.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
WAYNESBURG CENTRAL 3, CHARTIERS-HOUSTON 0 – Railey Bochna racked up 18 kills and added three digs as the Lady Raiders stayed unbeaten with a Section 4-3A victory over the Lady Buccaneers.
Scores were 25-15, 25-11 and 25-18.
Chatham Knight had 30 assists, seven digs and three kills for Waynesburg (7-0, 10-0) which also got seven kills, four aces and three digs from Emily Rafferty, six kills, four digs and two assists from Harper Grimes, 14 digs an three aces from Lelia McCollum and five kills from Emma Blair.
BROWNSVILLE 3, MCGUFFEY 2 – Aijanae Foster had 15 kills to help the Lady Falcons fend off the Lady Highlanders (5-2, 6-2) in a Section 4-3A match.
Riley Rohland contributed nine kills and Lena Rechichar had eight for Brownsville (5-2, 7-3), which also got 31 assists and 11 service points from Ari Johnson, 17 digs from Ashley Evanchak and 10 service points from Eva Rechichar.
BELLE VERNON 3, EAST ALLEGHENY 0 – Abby Nickolls rang up 15 assists, seven kills and five aces in the Lady Leopards’ Section 2-4A victory over EA (0-8, 0-10).
Scores were 25-9, 25-10 and 25-17.
Mailey Haynes contributed 11 digs and four aces for Belle Vernon (6-2, 8-3).
KISKI 3, ALBERT GALLATIN 0 – The Lady Cavaliers fought off the Lady Colonials in a Section 2-5A match by scores of 26-24, 25-23 and 25-19.
Isabelle Usher had nine kills for Albert Gallatin, which also got 28 digs from Danica Sterbutzel and 17 digs and 20 assists from Riylee Abel.
FRAZIER 3, CALIFORNIA 0 – Allie Monack contributed 15 kills and seven assists as the Lady Commodores triumphed over the Lady Trojans (4-3, 5-5) in a Section 4-2A match.
Scores were 25-14, 25-11 and 25-16.
Addison Hiles chipped in 10 digs and 12 service points for first-place Frazier (7-0, 9-2), which also got 11 kills and five blocks from Mia West and 14 assists and nine service points from Morgan Fisher.
JEFFERSON-MORGAN 3, CARMICHAELS 2 – Bailey Cervone totaled 12 digs, 10 kills and five blocks in the Lady Rockets’ Section 4-2A win over the Lady Mikes (3-4, 5-5).
Kelsey Vessels contributed five kills and 22 digs for J-M (3-4, 3-7), which also got 12 digs and eight assists from Mia Bertagnolli, 13 digs from Alaina McCollum and nine assists and eight digs from Mallory McManis.
