Local golf teams fall short of WPIAL finals

Laurel Highlands, Waynesburg Central and Mount Pleasant competed in the WPIAL team golf semifinals on Thursday but fell short of advancing to the district finals.

The Mustangs placed third in the Class 3A event at Champions Lake Golf Club with a team score of 437.

Only the top three teams out of each semifinal moved on.

Dan O’Neal led the way for Laurel Highlands with an 82 and was followed by Kayden Smith (86), Damon Revak (89), Ryan Revak (89) and Aiden Milsom (92). Cole Dempsey also competed for coach Mike Revaks’ squad and shot a 101.

Waynesburg also finished sixth in the Class 2A semifinal at Murraysville Golf Club.

The Raiders’ top score was a 74 by Matt Eisiminger and Jarett Tretinik carded a 78. Also scoring for Waynesburg were Ryan Midla (82), Lucas Slifko (88) and Cole Headlee (91). Carson Henry shot a 93.

Mount Pleasant wound up 10th in the Class 2A competition at Hickory Heights Golf Club.

Austyn Gross shot a 79 for the Vikings and was followed by Matthew Labuda (92), Hunter Snyder (93), Ezra Bowman (94) and Quinn Painter (100). Aidan Hovanec shot a 102.

BOYS SOCCER

SERRA CATHOLIC 6, BETH-CENTER 2 — Gary Amos scored both goals for the Bulldogs, including the 100th of his career, in a Section 2-A loss to Serra.l

BELLE VERNON 8, BROWNSVILLE 0 — Anthony Sawa scored two goals and Chris Showman and Dom Pireaux both had a goal and an assist in the Leopards’ Section 5-3A win over the Falcons.

Belle Vernon (8-1-1, 10-2-1) also got a goal apiece from Tyler Perozzi, Carter Schultz, Jesse Sobczak and Jordan Jerome, and assists from Gavin Metzger and Ethan Hunt. Goalkeeper Jackson Hurst made four saves.

Brownsville’s Camden Kline stopped 11 shots.

THOMAS JEFFERSON 3, LAUREL HIGHLANDS 0 — The Jaguars shut out the Mustangs in a Section 2-3A match.

BENTWORTH 16, CALIFORNIA 0 — Billy Moyer had three goals and Adam Moessner and Andrew Humberston added two apiece as the Bearcats topped the Trojans in a Section 2-A match.

MOUNT PLEASANT 7, LIGONIER VALLEY 1 — Lukas Showman knocked in three goals and added an assist, and Tyke Snyder contributed a goal and two assists as the Vikings triumphed over the Rams in a Section 5-2A match.

Mount Pleasant also got a goal apiece from Grant Zahrobsky, Gavin Jackovitz and Ethan Russell, two assists from Gavin Rummel and one assist each from Cayden Pickens and Noah Higgins.

Vikings goalkeepers Grayson Gardner and Alexander Chappell combined to make six saves.

HEMPFIELD 3, CONNELLSVILLE 0 — The Falcons fell to the Spartans in a Section 1-4A match.

SOUTHMORELAND 2, DERRY 0 — The Scotties blanked the Trojans in a Section 5-2A match.

SOUTHMORELAND 2, ALBERT GALLATIN 1 — Claire Thomas and Ashley Seder each found the net to help the Lady Scotties (6-6) edge the Lady Colonials (7-7) in a non-section matchup.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

WAYNESBURG CENTRAL 3, MCGUFFEY 0 — Harper Grimes totaled eight kills, six aces and three digs, and Chatham Knight contributed 26 assists, three digs and two blocks as the Lady Raiders stayed perfect with a Section 4-3A victory over the Lady Highlanders.

Scores were 25-23, 25-10 and 25-13.

Emily Rafferty added 12 kills and six digs for Waynesburg (9-0, 13-0), which also got five kills and three aces from Emma Blair, five kills and five digs from Railey Bochna and seven digs from Lelia McCollum.

BROWNSVILLE 3, YOUGH 0 — Amizhe Moore rang up 10 kills and Aijanae Foster had nine in the Lady Falcons’ Section 4-3A win over the Lady Cougars.

Scores were 25-20, 25-18 and 25-15.

Brownsville also got 25 assists and 10 service points from Arianna Johnson and 10 service points from Abigayle Thomas.

BETH-CENTER 3, MAPLETOWN 0 — The Lady Bulldogs knocked off the Lady Maples in a Section 4-2A match by scores of 25-10, 25-12 and 25-10.

Leona Liggett had five assists and five digs, and Lily Hawk chipped in five kills, two assists, two digs and two aces for Mapletown (0-7, 1-11), which also got three kills and three digs from Sophia Vanata and three digs from Willow Rudman.

PENN-TRAFFORD 3, ALBERT GALLATIN 0 — The Lady Warriors beat the Lady Colonials in a Section 2-5A match by scores of 25-17, 25-23 and 25-20.

Gabby Penrose had 10 kills and eight digs, and Riylee Abel added 12 assists and 10 digs for Albert Gallatin, which also got 10 digs from Jenna Myers, five kills and two aces from Paityn Goletz, eight digs from Lily Mick and five kills, two digs and two aces from Isabelle Usher.

GREENSBURG SALEM 3, BELLE VERNON 0 — The unbeaten Lady Lions (11-0, 12-0) swept the Lady Leopards (6-4, 8-5) in a Section 2-4A match.

Abby Nickolls led Belle Vernon with 10 digs, eight assists, five kills and three blocks. The Lady Leopards also got 16 digs from Adriana Mochnaly and 12 digs and seven assists froom Nazara Nickens.

LATROBE 3, CONNELLSVILLE 1 — The Lady Wildcats defeated the Lady Falcons in a Section 2-5A match.

CALIFORNIA 3, WEST GREENE 0 — The Lady Trojans toppled the Lady Pioneers in a Section 4-2A match.
