Lady Maples open season with victory

Leah Williamson rang up five kills, five aces and a pair of blocks as Mapletown opened its girls volleyball season with a 3-1 non-section victory at Turkeyfoot Valley on Monday.

The Lady Maples won by scores of 26-24, 22-25, 25-7 and 25-18.

Sophia Vanata contributed four kills and six aces and Milena Wrick had five blocks and three kills for Mapletown, which also got eight aces and two kills from Brynlee McKnight, three kills and five aces from Willow Rudman, three aces from Leona Liggett and two aces from Lainey Taylor.

CARMICHAELS 3, LAUREL HIGHLANDS 0 — The Lady Mikes swept the Fillies in a non-section match by scores of 25-21, 25-7 and 25-13.

Hailey Miklusko had 10 digs and two assists and Tate Swaney added eight assists for Laurel Highlands, which also got two kills and two digs from both Nakyah Richardson and Brinley Duncan, two kills each from Pixie Hill and Brynn Russell, three blocks from Gia Bannister, three digs and two aces from Ariana Bradley, two blocks from Mila Laws and two digs from Ava Bergman.

CONNELLSVILLE 3, SOUTHMORELAND 1 — The Lady Falcons dropped the first set to the visiting Lady Scotties, 25-21, buit rallied to take the next four by scores of 25-9, 25-18 and 25-12 to claim the non-section victory.

BOYS GOLF

NORWIN 185, CONNELLSVILLE 221 — All five golfers who scored for the victorious Knights shot 39 or better, led by Riley Shaffer’s 1-under-par 35, in a non-section boys match against the Falcons at Youghiogheny Country Club.

Leo Lilley had an even-par 36 for Norwin (3-3) which also got a 37 from Landon Stoner, a 38 from Jacob George and a 39 from Colin Madden.

Braydon Rockwell paced Connellsville (2-4) with a 40 and was followed by Wade Bryner (42), Landon Garlick (45) and Hunter and Hughes and Santo Crucio (47).

THOMAS JEFFERSON 184, UNIONTOWN 230 — Ty Hartman fired a 3-under-par 33 and Hunter Haynes carded an even-par 36 as the host Jaguars triumphed over the Red Raiders in a Section 2-3A match at Butler’s Golf Course.

Rounding out the scoring for TJ were Nate Thatcher (37) and Jake Pritchard and Mike Stock (39).

Liam Glover was Uniontown’s top scorer with a 40. He was followed by Elim Martin (42), Jason VanSickle (48), Jackson Opar (49) and Mason Payton (51).

MCGUFFEY 184, BROWNSVILLE 241 — Max Mezyk carded a 1-uder-par 34 and teammates Josh Rusmisel and Logen Hughes each turned in an even-par 35 as the host Highlanders rolled past the Falcons in a Section 3-2A match at Dogwood Hills Golf Course.

Noah Sibert and Tripp Sovich each had a 40 to round out the scoring for McGuffey.

Ava Rohland led Brownsville with a 45, Adam Vojacek and Dom Capan each shot 47, and Cooper Cetera and Hunter McDonald both had a 51.

MOUNT PLEASANT 210, DERRY 237 — Austyn Gross earned medalist honors with a 37 in the Vikings’ Section 2-2A win over Derry.

Hunter Snyder and Quinn Painter both carded a 41 for Mount Pleasant, which also got a 44 from Ezra Bowman and a 47 from Trever Gonofsky.

Cody Williams turned in a 39 for the Trojans and was followed by Cameron Thoams (46), Brycen Johnston (47), Alex Grohol (51) and Devin Hausser (54).

OTHER SCORES: Shady Side Academy 206, Geibel Catholic 264.

GIRLS GOLF

MOUNT PLEASANT 189, BELLE VERNON 209 — The Lady Vikings defeated the Lady Leopards in a non-section match.
