Derry rallies late to defeat Mustangs, 29-25

Max Doherty had 22 carries for 227 yards, including a go-ahead 33-yard touchdown run with 3:25 remaining, as Derry rally from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat visiting Laurel Highlands, 29-25, in non-conference football action on Friday night.
The Mustangs (0-2) had taken a 25-15 lead on Jackson Nairn’s 31-yard field early in the fourth quarter.
Anthony Sacco’s 8-yard touchdown run and Parker Petrosky’s extra point pulled the Trojans within three points before Doherty’s game-winning score.
Doherty gave Derry an early 7-0 lead with a 45-yard touchdown run in the first quarter but Gabe Centofanti tossed TD passes of 71 yards to Jonah Coleman and 21 yards to Alafia Calloway later in the quarter to put Laurel Highlands ahead 14-7.
The Trojans went ahead 15-7 when Doherty scored on a 3-yard run and ran in the two-point conversion in the second quarter but Nick Crouch answered for the Mustangs with a 52-yard touchdown run and Coleman’s two-point pass to Centofanti on a gadget play put the hosts in front 22-15 at halftime.
Centofanti completed 11 of 27 passes for 191 yards with five going to Coleman for 118 yards. Calloway had three receptions for 39 yards. Crouch ran for 89 yards on 11 attempts and had two catches for 24 yards.
Sacco threw for 61 yards and ran for 65 yards for Derry. Cael Brown rushed for 65 yards. Doherty also had three catches for 34 yards.
Laurel Highlands was hurt by 20 penalties for 137 yards but did not commit a turnover.
FRAZIER 33, KEYSTONE OAKS 28 — Brady Secrest threw for 295 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 84 yards and two more scores as the Commodores (1-1) held off the Golden Eagles in a non-conference battle.
Secrest completed a 30-yard TD pass to Austin Stewart to give Frazier a 14-3 lead but Keystone Oaks (0-2) pulled with 14-13 by halftime.
The Commodores increased their advantage to 26-13 with touchdown runs of 1 yard by Secrest and 59 yards by Kevin Etling in the third quarter. After a 64-yard TD run by KO’s Nazar Zhdanovich, Secrest’s 7-yard scoring pass to Brant Alekson put Frazier up 33-20 later in the third quarter and the Commodores hung on from there.
WEST GREENE 50, BROWNSVILLE 6 — Bret Scott scored three touchdowns all in the Pioneers’ 44-point second quarter as West Greene exploded to a non-conference victory over the visiting Falcons (0-2).
Joel Rizor rushed for 208 yards and two TDs and Scott added 60 yards for West Greene (1-1).
Brownsville led 6-0 after the first quarter on a 69-yard touchdown run by Silas Patterson.
West Greene took the lead for good on Gavin Roberts’ 51-yard punt return for a score and Scott’s two-point run early in the second quarter.
The Pioneers added TD runs of 17 and 4 yards by Scott and 15 yards by Rizor to go up 30-0.
Scott then ran a fumble back 47 yards for a score and Rizor tacked on a 53-yard touchdown run with 21 seconds left in the half to put the hosts up 44-6.
West Greene’s Lane Stephenson scored on a 17-yard run in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring.
WAYNESBURG CENTRAL 27, CHARTIERS-HOUSTON 14 — Teagan Crouse threw two of his three touchdown passes in the second half as the host Raiders pulled away after a 14-14 halftime tie for a non-conference win over the Buccaneers.
Crouse had a hand in all four of Waynesburg’s touchdowns, running for a 13-yard score and throwing a 21-yard TD pass to Hudson Bennett in the second quarter.
Crouse’s 18-yard touchdown throw to Landon Darr late in the third quarter put the hosts ahead to stay and he added a 36-yard scoring toss to Jack Ricciuti early in the fourth.
Crouse completed 10 of 17 passes for 214 yards and had nine carries for 82 yards.
Kymani Sumpter led the Raiders rushing attack with 11 carries for 87 yards and Ross Tennant ran nine times for 76 yards. Cole Phillips had four receptions for 61 yards, Riccuiti had two catches for 75 yards and Tennant snagged two passes for 42 yards.
MONESSEN 38, CARMICHAELS 0 — Da’Mari Miles ran for 83 yards and two touchdowns as the Greyhounds notched their football program’s 700th win with a shutout over the host Mikes in a non-conference game.
Touchdown runs of 5 yards by Miles and 54 yards by Kayden Kolbeck, and Roodly Destyl’s 32-yard fumble return gave Monessen (2-0) a 22-0 lead after one quarter.
Miles added a 2-yard TD run in the second quarter and Kaier Payne capped the scoring with a 3-yard scoring pass to D.J. Towler in the third.
Payne completed 10 of 19 passes for 97 yards.
Mikes quarterback Payton Morecraft connected on 7 of 12 passes for 39 yards. Job Smith had 14 yards rushing on five carries and caught three passes for 24 yards.
MOUNT PLEASANT 47, YOUGH 14 — Tristan Wtorkiewicz rushed for 103 yards on just four carries and scored four touchdowns in the Vikings’ non-conference win at rival Yough.
Wtorkiewicz had scoring runs of 17, 64 and 6 yards and returned a fumble 5 yards for a TD.
Bobby Smithnosky completed 5 of 6 passes for 105 yards and added a 1-yard touchdown run for Mount Pleasant (2-0), which scored 21 points in the first quarter and 19 in the second to take a commanding 40-0 halftime lead.
The Vikings also got TD runs of 17 yards from Kaden Hudec and 1 yard from Derrick Smith.
Yough (0-2) scores came on Atticus Kimmell’s 45-yard run in the third quarter and Joey Bibby’s 2-yard reception from Darius Stephenson in the fourth.
JEANNETTE 33, SOUTHMORELAND 0 — Hunter Schaffer returned a fumble 30 yards for a touchdown on the second play from scrimmage to give the visiting Jayhawks and early lead and they gradually pulled away from there for a non-conference win over the Scotties at Russ Grimm Field.
Jeannette led 7-0 after the first quarter then tacked on 13 points in both the second and third quarter.
Jayce Powell had seven carries for 113 yards and two TDs, Schaffer had two receptions for 117 yards and scored twice, and Anthony Stuchell completed 6 of 8 passes for 138 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Southmoreland’s Dylan Brown (55) and Reese Jordan (54) combined for 99 rushing yards.
BELLE VERNON 35, OUR LADY OF THE SACRED HEART 0 — Chase Petrosky ran for 75 yards, including touchdowns of 6 and 27 yards, as the Leopards stomped the host Chargers in a non-conference game.
Jace Gedekoh completed 10 of 12 passes for 120 yards with a 4-yard TD to Vander Raczkowski and scored on a 2-yard run for Belle Vernon (1-1).
The Leopards led 7-0 at halftime thanks to a 2-yard touchdown run by David Bergstedt in the first quarter before scoring 12 points in the third quarter and 16 in the fourth.
EAST ALLEGHENY 42, MAPLETOWN 6 — Tanner Loya scored three touchdowns and Jelani Hunte added two as Wildcats (2-0) triumphed over the Maples in a non-conference game.
Carson Vanata led Mapletown (0-2) with 11 carries for 115 yards, including a 54-yard touchdown in the third quarter, and two receptions for 27 yards. Tyler Dusenberry completed 4 of 10 passes for 39 yards and Clayton Radcliff had 12 tackles.
BENTWORTH 41, JEFFERSON-MORGAN 21 — Bryce Crowson ran for two touchdowns and Noah Heichty a kickoff back 70 yards for a score as the Bearcats beat the host Rockets in a non-conference game.
Bentworth (1-1) scored the first 20 points before J-M pulled within 27-15 with consecutive touchdowns in the third quarter but the Rockets (0-2) could get no closer.
SATURDAY
BETH-CENTER 48, RIVERVIEW 32 — DeSean Whipkey rushed for 105 yards and three touchdowns and also returned a kickoff 75 yards to set up the Bulldogs first score as Beth-Center rallied from a 14-point second-quarter deficit to defeat the host Raiders in a non-conference game Saturday.
Enzo Brown added 100 rushing yards for Beth-Center.
Riverview took a 14-0 lead before Whipkey’s long kickoff return led to his 6-yard TD run to get B-C on the board.
Lukas Duncan answered with an 87-yard touchdown run to put the Raiders up 20-7 but Chase Bebout’s 25-yard TD pass to Dan Duncan got Beth-Center within 20-14 before halftime.
The Bulldogs stormed ahead 27-20 in the third quarter on Brown’s 5-yard touchdown run and Duncan’s 68-yard TD reception from Brody Bebout.
Miles Duncan’s 55-yard interception for a score early in the fourth quarter got Riverview within 27-26 but Beth-Center answered with TD runs of 3 yards by Whipkey and 38 yards by Brown to push their advantage out to 41-26.
A Raiders touchdown pass got them within nine by they failed on a two-point conversion attempt and Whipkey’s 2-yard TD run put the game away.
