Waynesburg overwhelms Mount Pleasant, 42-7
WAYNESBURG – Waynesburg Central’s offense keeps piling up points quickly and in bunches.
Ky-mani Sumpter ran for three touchdowns and Teagan Crouse passed for three scores as the Raiders bounced back from their first loss of the season by pounding visiting Mount Pleasant, 44-14, in a Class 3A Interstate Conference football game Friday night.
Waynesburg (1-1, 4-1) controlled the game from the start, forging leads of 27-0 at the end of one quarter and 42-7 at halftime.
Sumpter opened the scoring with a 1-yard plunge and added a 38-yard jaunt around left end that put the Raiders up 13-0 less than eight minutes into the game.
Crouse threw a 34-yard TD pass to Jack Rucciti with 1:56 left in the opening quarter to make it 20-0.
It took Waynesburg a little more than one minute to score again as Sumpter tallied his third touchdown on a 21-yard burst that made it a 27-point lead for the Raiders.
Mount Pleasant (1-1, 3-2) finally got its offense going and used a 5-yard touchdown pass from Robert Smithnosky to Tristan Wtorkiewicz early in the second quarter to pull the Vikings to within 27-7.
Crouse, however, threw scoring passes of 20 yards to Caleb Phillips and 21 yards to Hudson Bennett before the first half would end. A two-point conversion run by Sumpter after the Phillips TD enabled Waynesburg to take a 35-point lead into halftime, triggering the mercy rule in the second half.
Waynesburg made it 44-7 less than 90 seconds into the third quarter when it recorded a safety. A snap from center was high and sailed over the Mount Pleasant quarterback, who fell on the ball in the Vikings’ end zone.
Wtorkiewicz scored his second touchdown, a four-yard run, midway through the third quarter to cut Waynesburg’s lead to 44-14.
