The proverb, “All good things must come to an end,” was applicable Tuesday night at A.J. Everhart Memorial Gymnasium.

Uniontown has won 15 consecutive section contests in the regular season, but Latrobe used two double-digit scoring runs to begin the first and second halves that helped the Wildcats secure a 82-43 victory in Section 1-5A boys basketball play.

“Give Latrobe credit, they were ready to play,” Uniontown coach Rob Kezmarsky said. “We prepared as well as we could. We talked about the scouting report. They played really well, and shot the ball at a high level. They haven’t shot like that all season but they did today.”

Kezmarsky’s squad was coming off an 83-77 overtime loss at Belle Vernon on Monday.

“We played with every ounce of energy last year at Belle Vernon,” Kezmarsky said. “We shot the ball really well in our first few games, but we didn’t shoot the ball well tonight.”

Latrobe (1-1, 3-3) opened on an 8-0 run that prompted Kezmarsky to take a timeout with 5:48 left in the first quarter. The Wildcats extended their lead to 15-0 when Dom Scarton connected on his first of seven 3-pointers before Cam Dugan hit a mid-range jumper to end the run with 2:32 left in the first period.

Scarton scored a game-high 25 points, as he added two 2-point field goals to his three pointers. Dugan led the Red Raiders (1-1, 3-3) in scoring with 18 points on six field goals and was 6 of 7 at the foul line.

Latrobe’s start against Uniontown was the opposite of how coach Brad Wetzel’s team began against Gateway last Thursday in the section opener.

“We were down 12-0 against Gateway and played them pretty-much even for the rest of the game, but you need to have a good start,” Wetzel said. “This is a tough place to play, and Uniontown has a solid team with a great tradition. They put it to us last year, so it was a good feeling to come here and have a great game.

“This section is pretty solid from top to bottom, so we have to come ready to play every game. Our guys played really well, and they did a great job on their top shooter (Isaac Ellsworth).”

The Red Raiders played the Wildcats close in the second quarter, as Latrobe had a 16-15 edge for a 41-21 halftime advantage. Payden Fitzgerald scored eight of his 12 points in the second period. He also was a force on the offensive glass.

The Wildcats put the game away early in the third quarter when Andy Tatsch connected on a two and three-point basket and Scarton made back-to-back three-pointers for a 52-21 lead with 5:45 left in the period. Tatsch scored 17 points on six field goals (two 3-pointers) and was 3 of 4 at the foul line.

Latrobe’s Ian DeCerb added 10 points and Rob Young had nine.

Uniontown defeated the Wildcats three times last year, including once in the playoffs, which made Tuesday’s victory sweeter for Latrobe point guard Sawyer Butina.

“We played as a team the whole game today,” Butina said. “We kept them off the glance, got rebounds and held them to one shot. I think everyone did their part. We had a great start, which was important. It was an exciting win tonight, especially since they beat us three times last year, but we have to take it one game at a time.”

The Red Raiders look to rebound when they host Penn-Trafford (1-1, 2-5) on Friday at 7 p.m.

“It’s one game and tonight was a learning experience for us,” Kezmarsky said. “We need two days of practice, and I promise, we will be ready to go on Friday.”

The Wildcats are back in the Uniontown area on Friday at Laurel Highlands (0-2, 4-3).
