Jenkins leads Lady Red Raiders to victory
Uniontown enjoyed its trip up the Summit, as Aierra Jenkins led a trio of double-figure scorers in the Lady Red Raiders’ 80-25 victory in non-section girls basketball play on Monday at Turkeyfoot Valley High School.
Jenkins scored a game-high 32 points. Teammate Charley Murtha added 19 and Tessa Nicholson put in 13 for the visitors.
Uniontown (5-1) had a 14-6 lead after the first quarter, and after outscoring the Lady Rams, 29-5, in the second frame, held a 43-11 advantage at the half.
The Lady Raiders won the third quarter, 28-3. Turkeyfoot (0-2) had an 11-9 edge in the fourth frame.
The Lady Rams’ Emma Holliday scored a team-high 11 points.
Geibel Catholic 57, Clairton 30 — The Lady Gators jumped out early and cruised to a Section 2-1A triumph at “The Swamp.”
Geibel had a 21-4 lead after the first quarter and a 33-13 halftime advantage. The Lady Gators outscored the Lady Bears, 16-10, in the third period and 8-7 in the fourth.
Geibel’s Emma Larkin scored a game-high 22 points. The Lady Gators’ Alexa Morgan had 20 and Mallory Clemmer dropped 15.
Geibel improved to 2-0 in section play and 7-0 overall.
Karma Fuqua led Clairton (0-2, 1-3) in scoring with 20 points.
Washington 47, Brownsville 45 — The Lady Falcons’ fourth-quarter rally fell short in a Section 3-3A setback to the Lady Prexies at Brownsville Area High School.
Washington (2-0, 3-1) had a 37-30 lead after three periods, but Brownsville (0-2, 1-4) outscored the visitors, 15-10, in the final frame.
The Lady Prexies’ Olivia Woods scored a game-high 19 points.
The Lady Falcons had three players in double figures with Ava Clark’s 17 points leading the way. Skyler Gates had 15 and Ciara Horabik put in 11.
Belle Vernon 53, Yough 18 — The Lady Leopards shut down the Lady Cougars in a Section 3-4A win at Yough High School.
Belle Vernon (1-0, 5-1) had a 22-8 lead after the first quarter, and held on for the victory. The Lady Leopards won the second frame, 16-5, the third, 9-5, and the fourth, 6-0.
Belle Vernon’s Saylor Lee led the game in scoring with 16 points. Teammate Aubrey Brown put in 15.
Yough’s Everlyn Gates dropped 10 points.
Elizabeth Forward 65, Laurel Highlands 24 — The Lady Warriors were too much for the Lady Mustangs in Section 3-4A play at Elizabeth Forward High School.
Elizabeth Forward (2-0, 4-2) built up a 42-9 halftime lead, as Addison Wach (16), Kaylin Staszak (15) and Kaelynn Settles (12) reached double figures.
Laurel Highlands (0-2, 1-5) was led in scoring by Chloe Price’s 10 points.
Greensburg Salem 71, Connellsville 45 — Saige Mickens continued to lead the way for the Lady Falcons, but the Lady Golden Lions pulled away for a non-section triumph at Greensburg Salem High School.
Mickens, a ninth grader, led Connellsville (3-5) in scoring with 18 points. Teammate Maggie Orndorff put in 10.
Greensburg Salem (4-2) had four players in double digits, including Vienna Jevickey, who had a game-high 19 points. Mya Heasley put in 15, and Kiona Grace and Sophie Beckerleg had 13 points apiece.
The Lady Golden Lions had an 18-11 lead after the opening period before extending their halftime advantage to 38-22.
The Lady Falcons had a 13-10 edge in the third quarter, but the home team outscored the visitors, 23-10, in the fourth frame.
Burgettstown 69, Frazier 40 — The Lady Commodores hung tough in the first half before the Lady Blue Devils took control in the second and pulled away for a non-section win at Henry DiVirgilio Fieldhouse.
Frazier (2-4) trailed 34-28 at halftime, but Burgettstown (4-1) outscored the home team, 13-3, in the third. The visitors had a 22-9 advantage in the fourth period.
The Lady Blue Devils had four players reach double figures in scoring, as Paige Klodowski led the way with 19 points. Savanna Rush had 18, and Andi Midler and Emilyn Harrison scored 10 points apiece.
The Lady Commodores’ Allie Yauch dropped a team-high 14 points.
South Park 43, Mount Pleasant 23 — The Lady Eagles’ defense held the Lady Vikings in check to earn a victory in Section 3-4A action at South Park High School.
Mount Pleasant (1-1, 3-3) was limited to single digits in each quarter, while South Park (2-0, 2-3) built up a 33-11 lead at halftime.
The Lady Vikings had a 9-7 edge in the third quarter, and both teams scored three points apiece in the fourth frame.
The Lady Eagles’ Nika Contakos put in a game-high 14 points. Teammates Hayley Bennett (13) and Bella Stromberg (12) were also in double figures.
Mount Pleasant’s Ryleigh Drzal had a team-high eight points.
Boys basketball
Belle Vernon 83, Uniontown 77 — The Leopards and Red Raiders battled it out for four quarters in a non-section contest at Belle Vernon Area High School, but an extra session was needed after both teams scored 70 points in regulation.
Belle Vernon (4-3) outscored Uniontown, 13-7, in overtime to earn the victory.
The Leopards’ Curtis Wade led all scorers with 32 points. The Red Raiders’ Isaac Ellsworth wasn’t far behind with 30.
Belle Vernon’s Luca Ghilani had 20 points and Came Jenko put in 10.
Uniontown’s Cam Dugan added 18 and Nolan Baker dropped 14.
The Leopards, who received their championship rings for winning the WPIAL Class 4A title last season, had a 17-12 lead after the first quarter, but the Red Raiders (3-2) used a 17-8 advantage in the second period for a 29-25 edge at halftime.
Belle Vernon had a one-point lead after three quarters following a 25-20 advantage in the third. Uniontown won the fourth quarter, 21-20, to force overtime.
Central Valley 74, Southmoreland 46 — The Scotties’ Noah Felentzer scored a game-high 22 points, but the Warriors had four players in double figures to earn a non-section road victory.
Central Valley (6-0) had a 20-12 lead after the first quarter and a 42-24 halftime advantage. The Warriors outscored Southmoreland, 32-22, in the second half.
Central Valley’s Ryan Conti had 18 points. Teammate Angelo Conti (13), Wyatt Clark (12) and Isaac Huber (10) were also in double digits.
Brady Sherbondy scored 10 points for the Scotties (2-3).
Charleroi 90, California 57 — The Cougars started strong and never looked back in a non-section victory at California Area High School.
Charleroi (3-3) led 20-9 after the opening period and 47-26 at halftime. The visitors had a 24-17 edge in the third and a 19-14 advantage in the fourth period.
The Cougars’ Xavion Thomas and the Trojans’ Weston Monticelli each scored 17 points for game-high honors. Charleroi’s Grant Shields and Brayden Todaro had 16 points apiece, and teammate Jackson Keranko put in 14.
Ben Ziolecki had 13 and Alan Dennis put in 10 points for California (0-3).
Swimming
BOYS: Uniontown 98, McKeesport 48, Garrett County 8; GIRLS: Uniontown 91, Garrett County 58, McKeesport 8 — Addison Caruso and Hannah Foster won two individual and two relay races in helping the Lady Red Raiders to a non-section victory at Uniontown Area High School.
Foster, a senior, won the 50-yard freestyle in 27.43 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:14.20. She and Caruso joined Joss Rutter and Shelbie Covert to win the 200 medley relay in 2:05.80. Caruso and Foster teamed with Abigail Horner and Eleanor Carei to top the field in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 2:02.61.
Caruso, a ninth grader, won the 200 freestyle in 2:19.45. She touched the wall first in the 100 butterfly in 1:07.35.
Rutter, a senior, won the 100 backstroke in 1:09.65 and the 200 IM in 2:37.76. Covert, also a ninth grader, won the 500 freestyle in 6:19.47.
Northern Garrett’s Kirstin Ellis won the 100 freestyle in 1:14.73.
In the boys action, the Tigers’ Johnny Baila won the 200 freestyle (1:53.18) and 100 backstroke (59.11). Teammate Kyle Badstibner won the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.40.
Red Raider sophomore Ivan Rutter won the 100 butterfly in 1:05.35. Teammate and freshman Patrick Foster won the 200 IM in 2:27.06. Uniontown junior Chase King won the 500 freestyle in 5:37.94. Fellow junior Donte Rugola earned victory in the 100 freestyle in a time of 54.49.
Foster, Rutter and Rugola were joined by junior Logan Davis to win the 200 medley relay in 1:54.55.
The Red Raiders’ Cameron and Carson Soltis, Trenton Kessler and Kavon Novak won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:31.55.
Northern Garrett’s Rowan Rikhye won the 50 freestyle in 23.54.
Uniontown hosts Connellsville in a non-section meet on Thursday at 6 p.m.
BOYS: East Allegheny 55, Belle Vernon 36; GIRLS: Belle Vernon 55, East Allegheny 48 — Josie Nikolic swam WPIAL-qualifying times in two events to help the Lady Leopards to a non-section triumph over East Allegheny.
Nikolic earned her spot in the WPIAL Class 2A championship meet with victories in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke that also hit the WPIAL cut.
Teammate Megan Shusteric was a double winner in the 50 and 500 freestyle, and Shusteric’s time in the 500 hit the WPIAL standard.
Isabella O’Wade won the 100 breaststroke for the Lady Leopards (2-2).
Belle Vernon also won the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay. Nikolic and Shusteric were on both relays. O’Wade was on the 200 medley relay.
Gaige Watson qualified for the WPIAL Class 2A championship meet in boys action after winning the 200 freestyle and hitting the standard time. Watson also won the 100 freestyle.
The Leopards’ Brady Malekovich won the 200 IM and 500 freestyle. Teammate Derek Milkovich won the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.
