Local roundup: Noah, Livingood key Lady Raiders’ win over AG
Emmaleigh Noah pitched a four-hitter and Ava Livingood’s RBI single keyed a tiebreaking three-run sixth inning to lead Uniontown past visiting Albert Gallatin, 4-1, in a Section 2-AAAA softball game on Wednesday.
Noah allowed one run and one walk with 10 strikeouts and helped her own cause with three stolen bases and two runs scored in the Lady Raiders’ season opener. Livingood was 2 for 3 with two RBIS and a run scored.
Losing pitcher Avery Walls gave up three earned runs on just three hits with three walks and 12 strikeouts for the Lady Colonials (0-1, 0-2).
Livingood singled and scored in the bottom of the fourth to give Uniontown a 1-0 lead.
Ashley Metts singled in Mia Myers in the top of the sixth to tie it for AG.
Livingood’s hit and a run-scoring sacrifice bunt by Delaney Ansell highlighted the Lady Raiders’ three-run rally in the bottom of the inning.
Myers had two hits, including a double for the Lady Colonials, who also got a double from Mya Glisan.
Connellsville 5, Latrobe 1 – The Lady Falcons scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh inning to return home with a non-section win.
Kameron Kantorik started the game-winning rally with two outs when she was hit by a pitch. Molly Greenawalt followed with a single. Greenawalt headed to second when the throw from the outfield went through to third base.
Kantorik broke for home when the throw went to second, but stopped and headed back to third base. The throw went to the plate, got away from the catcher, and Kantorik scored the winning run.
Cali Leighliter hit a solo home run in the fifth inning for Connellsville (4-1).
Sarah Blossey hit a two-run home run for the Lady Wildcats (1-2).
Southmoreland 15, Valley 0 – The Lady Scots scored 10 runs in the top of the first inning for a non-section win in three innings over the visiting Lady Vikings.
Maddie Brown and Zoey Murphy combined on a 1-hitter in the victory. The lead-off batter in the top of the first inning blooped a single off Brown. Brown struck out two and didn’t walk a batter in two innings of work. Murphy had one strikeout.
Southmoreland’s Amarah McCutcheon had two hits in the first inning, including a home run. McCutcheon finished with three hits and four RBI. Makayla Etling hit a solo home run. Brooke McBeth had a double, single and RBI, and Riley Puckey went 3-for-3. Taylor Doppelheuer finished with two hits. Eight of the nine starters had at least one hit.
Mapletown 15, California 5 – Makenna Lotspeich had a double, two singles and three RBIs and Marley Seward also doubled and knocked in three runs as the Lady Maples triumphed over the host Lady Trojans in a Section 2-A game.
Winning pitcher Devan Clark gave up three earned runs on seven hits with three walks and nine strikeouts, and added a double, single and two RBIs with the bat.
Bella Garnek doubled and singled for Mapletown (1-0, 1-1) which also got a double from Alexis Perry.
Madyson Morton doubled and singled for California (0-1, 0-3) which also got two hits and an RBI from Kayla Saeli, an RBI from Gabby Pendo and two RBIs with a double from losing pitcher Kera Urick.
Mogadore (Ohio) 6, Waynesburg Central 5; Xaverian (N.Y.) 9, Waynesburg Central 1 – The Lady Raiders dropped two non-section games at Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
Gina Tedrow knocked in five runs with a home run and a single, and Ellie Makel tripled for Waynesburg (1-5) which couldn’t overcome a 6-3 deficit against Mogadore.
Tedrow doubled for one of the Lady Raiders’ five hits in the loss to Xaverian.
Baseball
California 13, Mapletown 3 – The Trojans scored six runs in the top of the first inning to sweep the season series from the Maples.
California (2-0, 2-2) benefited from five walks and three hit-batsmen.
Logan Hartley earned the win, striking out four and walking three in four innings of work.
Kris Weston, Hartley and Spencer Petrucci all had two hits in the win.
Mapletown slips to 0-2 in the section and 1-3 overall.
Frazier 4, Beth-Center 2 – Brock Alekson, Dailan McManus and Aidan Hardy combined on a no-hitter as the host Commodores defeated the Bulldogs in a Section 1-AA game.
Alekson, who also had two hits, allowed one earned run on four walks, a hit batter and a wild pitch while striking out seven in 5 1/3 innings to earn the win. McManus pitched one scoreless inning and Hardy recorded the final two outs to complete the no-hitter and notch the save.
Brant Alekson also had two hits and McManus contributed a hit, run, RBI and three stolen bases for Frazier (1-1, 1-1) which also got an RBI from Tyler Morrison.
Losing pitcher Ethan Varesko surrendered two earned runs on eight hits with two walks and five strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.
Luke Amon hit a sacrifice fly and Preston Bebout also had an RBI for Beth-Center (1-1, 2-2). Jonah Sussan scored once and stole three bases for B-C.
The Bulldogs scored once in each of the first two innings. Frazier scored twice in the bottom of the first, went ahead 3-2 with a run in the fourth and tacked on an insurance run in the sixth.
Ringgold 8, Trinity 7 – Andrew Sprinkle came home on Alex Kolano’s run-scoring single to cap a two-run, game-winning rally in the bottom of the eighth inning in the Rams’ non-section win over the visiting Hillers.
Kolano drove in three runs with four hits, including a double in the bottom of the sixth when Ringgold (2-1) scored four runs to turn a 5-2 deficit into a 6-5 lead.
The Hillers tied it in the top of the seventh when Jonah Williamson stole third and came home on a throwing error, and took a 7-6 lead in the top of the eighth on Matthew Robaugh’s solo home run.
Gavin Angotti led off the bottom of the eighth with a double for the Rams. Sprinkle put down a bunt that was misplayed for an error as Angotti scored to tie the game. Angotti then stole second to set the stage for Kolano.
Sprinkle and Demetri Lowe both had two hits for Ringgold.
Gibby Havanis doubled twice for Trinity (1-1).
Eddie Frizzell earned the win in relief. Zach Schrader took the loss.
Norwin 13, Connellsville 2 – Ty Cupp hit a two-run double in a four-run first inning and the Knights rode a 16-hit attack to a five-inning, non-section win over the Falcons.
Cupp, Keegan Carr, Benjamin Geissler, Matthew O’Neil and Nolan Ryan all had two hits for Norwin (2-0) which scored the first seven runs of the game.
Matthew Firestone got Connellsville (1-3) on the board with a two-run single in the bottom of the third to make it 7-2 but that’s all winning pitcher Nate Helphenstie would surrender in tossing a two-hitter.
Mason Miller took the loss.
McGuffey 9, Southmoreland 5 – Mason Piatt doubled and drove in three runs as the Highlanders beat the host Scotties in a Section 4-AAA game.
Winning pitcher Reno Presto also doubled for McGuffey (2-0, 2-1) as did Cameron Dames and Samuel Stout.
Ty Keffer had two hits, including a double, and an RBI for Southmoreland (0-2, 0-4).
Boys tennis
Valley 4, Mount Pleasant 1 – Valley swept the doubles and won two singles matches for a Section 1-AA victory in the battle of Vikings.
Eli Duvall won Mount Pleasant’s lone match with a 6-7 (7), 6-0, 6-3, victory at No. 2 singles.
